Pufftiche

/pftSH/

An artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work, artist, or period, entirely in the medium of Pufns. The following works take inspiration from Deco posters from the 20's and 30's , as well as propaganda posters from the second world war.

Full Of Eels?
Eat as many Eels as you can. A Full pufn is a diligent pufn. Eels are Evil and taste like victory! Full Of Eels is a play on war era propaganda. The Evil Enemy (lesser black backed guls) will steal Sand Eels from the hard working pufns. Whilst watching the constant battle between the two birds on the Isle of Skomer, an obvious Battle of Britain Allegory reared its beak. "A poster, unlike a painting, is not, and is not meant to be, a work easily distinguished by its 'manner' - a unique specimen conceived to satisfy the demanding tastes of a single more or less enlightened art lover. It is meant to be a mass-produced object existing in thousands of copies - like a fountain-pen or automobile. Like them, it is designed to answer certain strictly material needs. It must have a commercial fashion." - Adolphe Mouron Cassandre

The Deco Bird

Pufns join my love of wildlife and Art Deco forms and graphic design. The aerodynamic and industrious contours, bold, almost geometric ashes of colour, both functionally perfect and yet fantastically decorative. If I told you Pufns were invented in 1932, would it be that much of stretch?

Bereny Pufftiche
Sandeels is a Pufn oriented pastiche of the art deco Modiano cigarette advertisement by Robert Berny. It is fascinating to me that a borderline terrifying image can be used to commercially promote a product. I'm convinced that the original advert was the inspiration for the character 'The Hitcher' from the Mighty Boosch. Makes it even more appropriate for an advert selling 'Eels'. Evasion
A good Pufn is an invisible Pufn. Gulls will stalk you to your burrow and eat your Pufings!A Pufns take on 'Loose lips sink ships'. The Gulls on Skomer will wait next to the pufns burrows to steal their Sand Eels and even eat their Pufings (real word, I promise). The Pufns will circle their burrows ve or six times before darting in at great speed when the Gulls head is turned. The Old enemy

Starve the Gull. Claim what is rightfully yours. Victory through hunting skill. EAT ALL THE SAND EELS! This Propaganda poster is an Ad Hominem appeal to fear. The Gull is depicted in a simplied yet murderous form, beak agape and seemingly bottomless. The easiest way a weaker enemy can defeat a stronger foe is to deplete their resources. Propaganda often de-humanises an enemy so the public will not feel sympathy. Prices (available without text) Framed 12x18" Print - 150 12x18" Print - 75 Framed 8x12" Print - 90 8x12" Print - 45
