Temporal Union with Christ

Rom 16:7: Greet Andronicus and Junias, my kinsmen and my fellow prisoners, who are outstanding among the apostles, who also were in Christ before me. The in Christ relationship has a primordial, or pre-temporal aspect (as we learned in our last lesson), But it also has a temporal, in time aspect, which explains Rom 16:7.

Temporal Union with Christ

What this means is that although you were united with Christ (in Christ) before time began, It is also true that you entered into union with Christ after time began, at a point during your lifetime.

Defining Repentance

What Repentance Is Not

What Repentance Is Not

It is not penance It is not reformation

What Repentance Is Not

It is not simply sorrow for sin 2 Cor 7:9-10: I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

What Repentance Is Not

It is not simply sorrow for sin Luke 18:23: But when [a rich ruler] had heard these things [sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me], he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.

What Repentance Is Not

It is not simply sorrow for sin Matt 27:3: Then when Judas, who had betrayed Him, saw that He had been condemned, he felt remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have sinned by betraying innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? See to that yourself! And he threw the pieces of silver into the temple sanctuary and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.

What Repentance Is Not

It is not simply a change of mind about who Jesus is This idea takes the definition of one Greek word used for repentance (metano and its cognatesthere are others), divorces it from its usage, and assigns it to the entire doctrine. The standard Greek lexicon (BDAG) does not list any references from the NT in connection with this meaning.

What Repentance Is
The Old Testament Witness

What Repentance Is: OT

We begin with the Old Testament because it is from the Old Testament that the writers and preachers of the New Testament derive their understanding of the nature of repentance. The following is a representative Old Testament example

What Repentance Is: OT

Jer 3:22-4:1: "Return, O faithless sons, I will heal your faithlessness." "Behold, we come to You; For You are the LORD our God. Surely, the hills are a deception, A tumult on the mountains. Surely in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel. But the shameful thing has consumed the labor of our fathers since our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. Let us lie down in our shame, and let our humiliation cover us; for we have sinned against the LORD our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day. And we have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God." 4:1 "If you will return, O Israel," declares the LORD, "Then you should return to Me. And if you will put away your detested things from My presence, And will not waver, And you will swear, 'As the LORD lives,' In truth, in justice and in righteousness; Then the nations will bless themselves in Him, And in Him they will glory." For thus says the LORD to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, "Break up your fallow ground, And do not sow among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the LORD And remove the foreskins of your heart, Men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, Or else My wrath will go forth like fire And burn with none to quench it, Because of the evil of your deeds."

What Repentance Is: NT

The New Testament concept of repentance flows from the Old Testament (as you might expect).
John the Baptist
Matt 3:2, 8, 11: Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.8Therefore bear fruit in keeping with repentance.11As for me, I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

John the Baptists ministry is especially significant for understanding the doctrine of repentance because he forms the bridge between the Old Covenant and New Covenant communities.

2 Cor 7:9-11a: I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong.
