Chapter I Introduction

Background of the Study In the past, students of the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda College have always enjoyed a four-day course week. Students only go to class during Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Wednesday has always been a rest day or the organization day for the students. But when the second semester of the Academic Year 2010-2011 opened, Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo Jr. dean of the College of Arts and Sciences initiated the implementation of the Wednesday class to strengthen the schools bid to recuperate from the current status in the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) (Icasiano, 2010, p. 2).

A number of advantages have been seen regarding the reinstatement of Wednesday Classes. Dean Juanillo said that the move to reintroduce the Wednesday was done in order to elevate the quality of education and restore the lost glory in academic competency. He also said that the purpose of the Wednesday classes is to really optimize student presence in the school. Also, having a Wednesday will spare students from long hours of cramming lessons in a four-day week schedule. These will also spare students from two to three hours of class time and will give them a well-calibrated one hour or one and a half hour of class time.

3 One of the negative aspects of reinstating the Wednesday class is its effect on the organizational activities or meeting which is held during Wednesday as it is the designated organization day. Another disadvantage is that the implementation was done in a haste which leaves no room for students to adjust to the new schedule. The reinstatement of the Wednesday may have its advantages and disadvantages. Some may agree to it, some may not. The people who disagree to it cant do anything but to follow as it is already implemented. With the reinstatement of the Wednesday, San Beda College may once again regain its lost glory in academic competency.

Statement of the Problem This study is an attempt to investigate and to communicate the various insights of the people affected by the reinstatement of the Wednesday class.

Generally, it sought answers to the question: 1. Does gender and age affect the perception of students to the reinstatement of the Wednesday class? Specifically, it sought answers to the following: 1.1. Are their differences with how male students perceive the reinstatement of the Wednesday class compared to female students? 1.2. Does age affect the perception of students on the reinstatement of the Wednesday class?

4 Significance of the Study This research will give emphasis on the possibilities regarding the reinstatement of the Wednesday classes in the College of Arts and the Sciences. First, for the students, it is important for them to know that their opinion about the benefits and problems of reinstatement the Wednesday class differs from their peers given that their age and gender are different. Second, for the administration, this research will help them know how students perceived this new schedule and will guide them on the progress of the students since the rule was implemented.

Theoretical and Conceptual Framework Figure 1.1

Gender and Age of Respondents.

Perception about the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class.

Figure 1.1 shows that Gender and age of respondents affect the students perception about the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class.

5 Research Hypothesis H0: The age and gender of the respondents do not affect the perception to the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class. H1: The age and gender of the respondents affect the perception to the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class.

Scope and Limitation This research is based on the perception and feedback of Human Resource Development Management students of the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda College regarding the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class. This research wants to know if the age and gender of the students affects their perception about the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class.

Definition of Terms Reinstatement It is the process of re-establishing the status of a person, a company, or a law (Merriam Webster dictionary, 2008). Perception It is defines as the act of apprehending by means of senses or the mind; understanding (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/perception). Optimal It is define as the point at which the condition, degree or amount of something is favorable (Merriam Webster dictionary, 2008)

6 PAASCU Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities. It is a private organization which accredits academic programs which meet commonly accepted standards of quality education (www.paascu.org.ph).

7 Chapter II Review of Related Literature

These days, it is very common for Colleges and Universities to have at least five days of class per week. They require their students to attend class from Monday to Friday. Sometimes, even up to Saturday. But in the case of San Beda College, especially the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), students only have four days of class per week. Based on the information stated in the San Beda College CAS Student Information Handbook 2009, regular classes in the CAS are held on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30 in the morning with the last period ending at 9:00 in the evening. Wednesday has always been the rest day, activity day or organization day for Bedans.

When the new administration of the College of Arts and Sciences, headed by the dean, Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo Jr., was formed, everything changed. Earlier this second semester of Academic 2010 2011, he initiated the reinstatement of the Wednesday class for the CAS to strengthen our bid to recuperate from the current status in the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (Icasiano, 2010, p. 2).

The dean also explained, as cited by Icasiano (2010), that maximizing time, promoting interaction and encouraging physical presence will bring desired results both for the students and the professors. He also said that the purpose of Wednesday classes is to really optimize student presence in the school. He further elaborated that optimal

8 learning can engage both student and teachers if only practical amount of time necessary for optimal learning is given. He also stated the importance of apportioned sessions instead of long hours of cramming lessons in a four-day course week. Some schedules are two to three hours per subject as opposed to what he believed as a well calibrated one hour or one-and-a-half-hour class schedule.

The dean may have a point when he said that it will be good for students to have a one hour to one-and-a-half-hour class in a span of five days per week rather than the two to three hour class cramped in a four-day course week. According to Professor Shpungin (http://psychology.kenyon.edu/shpungin/102/Tips.htm), research has shown that concentration, comprehension, and memory progressively decrease after forty-five minutes of solid studying.

The move to reinstate the Wednesday class in the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda College is done to move the CAS to a superior stage of excellence, elevate the quality of education and restore the lost glory in academic competency (The Bedan, vol. 68 no. 4, 2010). Dr. Marvin Reyes, a professor in the CAS of San Beda College together with the faculty, called a dialogue with the dean regarding the issue of the Wednesday class. He stressed out important points to support and justify what the dean had said about the reinstatement of the Wednesday class. He said, First, our status is now on level 2 in PAASCU (www.paascu.org.ph). If we want to elevate the status of the College from level 2, we must use all the resources we have in a week. Second, we are required to report in the faculty for 30 hours a week. Sometimes, we cant consume those 30 hours so

9 Wednesday is really needed. Third and the most important thing that the dean pointed out is that, if we are going to teach for four days instead of five days, how can we ensure the excellence in teaching? We did not go to school for extra-curricular activities. We go to school to study (The Bedan, vol. 68 no. 4, 2010).

It is not only the dean who wants to elevate the quality of education. Senator Angara said on his speech at the 20TH Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP) that Education has now become international. Today, we train people not just for our manpower needs. We train them for the world. And when people from other countries come here, they will come here to look for the global-quality graduates. He also said that to meet international benchmarks, we need to consciously and systematically bring up our academic standards more than the ordinary. We must upgrade the skills and qualifications of students because they are a tribute to their institution and to the country (http://www.scribd.com/doc/ 17709285/ Quality-of-Philippine-Education).

Rules are rules. Students and faculty alike cant do anything but to abide by it. Certain adjustments will have to be made for us to cope with a five-day course week as we are accustomed to a four-day course week. It will never be easy. But we can endure it and we can succeed. Just like what former president Fidel V. Ramos said, Of all the ties that bring our people and nation together, it is our pride as Filipinos that is the strongest. But a close second national bond is our common aspiration for learning and education.

10 Our thirst for knowledge was formed even before we become the nation we are today (http://www.scribd.com/doc/ 17709285/ Quality-of-Philippine-Education).

11 Chapter III Methodology

Research Design

Our objective is to know if age and gender affects the perception of students of Human Resource Development Management of the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda College regarding the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class. In order for us to meet this objective, we, the researchers use the descriptive method specifically the descriptive survey method.

Sampling Design and Technique

We use cluster sampling as our sampling design. We use this design because it is not possible to conduct a survey to the whole student population of san Beda College given the time constraints. There are two category areas of sample: the male and the female. Each category areas are still divided into three: first year HRDM students, second year HRDM students and third year HRDM students.

12 The Subject

The subjects of this research are first year, second year and third year Human Resource Development Management students of the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda College. The results that the researchers will get from the respondents will help the researchers identify if there is any difference in the perception of the benefits and problems of reinstating the Wednesday class between male and female first year, second year and third year HRDM students of the College of Arts and Sciences of San Beda College.

The Research Instrument

The researchers will use a questionnaire as their research instrument. The questionnaire is divided into two parts. The first part is about the personal information of the respondent. In this part, the researchers will determine the age and gender of the respondents. The second part is about knowing the perception of the respondents to the benefits and problems of the reinstatement of the Wednesday class.

13 Validation of the Research Instruments

The researchers will seek the help of several faculty members and the dean of the CAS to validate their questions. Faculty members will be chosen based on their involvement in the reinstatement of the Wednesday class. The dean is chosen primarily because he was the one who initiated the reinstatement of the Wednesday class and the researchers think that his opinion regarding the matter is important.

Data Gathering Procedure

The gathering will be done in no specific time but in a period of one week. The researchers will go to the classrooms of the first year, second year and third year HRDM students and will let them answer the questionnaire prepared by the researchers.

Data Processing Method

The researchers will classify the paper according to the respondents age and gender. The data that will be gathered will be computed using statistical methods. The results will be summarized into charts and tables in percentage or decimals.

14 Statistical Tool The researchers will use the Frequency and Percentage as their statistical tool. It will best show if there is difference in the perception of male and female.

While the remaining 72.22% of respondents thinks otherwise.

25 Chapter V Conclusion and Recommendation

Conclusion Based on the significant findings of the study, the following conclusions were made:

1. Gender does not affect the male and female perception on implementing the Wednesday class. Only 3 respondents, 2 female and 1 male said that they are in favor of the implementation of the Wednesday class.

2. When it comes to age, the answers of the female respondents who belong to the 16-year old up to the 19 year old age group have almost the same answer. However, almost all of the answer of the female respondent who belongs to the 15 year old age group differs from the answer of female respondents who belong to the 20 year old age group. There is a difference in terms of age in the perception especially with the big gap between the 2 age group.

3. According to the article that Jay Patterson wrote, females are much better at multitasking than men. But based on the results of our survey, both male and female are having problems with their extra-curricular and organizational activities. Both sexes are also having problems coping up with Wednesday classes

26 4. The administration believes that reinstating the Wednesday class will improve the academic status of San Beda. Based on the findings we have, almost half of the respondents believe in what the administration is saying.

According to an article written by Jay Patterson, male and female see many issues completely differently. And there are scientific reasons why male and female perceptions are different. He said that women have more rod and cones in their eyes than men which allow them to see things in a detailed manner compared to men. Another difference of the male and female which affects perception is their brain. The brain of the female has more connection between the right and left halves. This makes the male and female perception so varied in many aspects of life. But the results of our study say otherwise. Almost all respondents, both male and female are not in favor of the implementation of the Wednesday class. Also, both sexes, despite their age dont want it to be permanent. For them, staying longer in school doesnt result in a good academic status. It will just worsen their behavior, make their sleep erratic and they think that their grades are suffering because of the immediate implementation of the Wednesday class.

There are certain issues where the male and female have a different perception. But with the results that we got, the reinstatement of the Wednesday class is not one of those things that will make the perception of the male and the female respondents differ.

27 Recommendation:

1. The students are one with the administration in improving the academic status of San Beda College. However, if they are going to implement this kind of rule, we think that students should be consulted as they are the ones directly affected by the rule.

2. The administration should have slowly implemented the rule instead of doing it immediately. This will give time for students to adjust on their new schedule.

3. They should also put into consideration that by immediately implementing the Wednesday class, many organizational and school wide activities will suffer. With a Wednesday class now, organizations doesnt have a day were they can conduct activities without interfering with normal class hours.

4. The time a student stay in school should also be considered. The length of hours we stay in school now with the Wednesday class implemented is still the same when we dont have a Wednesday class. This leaves us a shorter time to study our lessons and do our homework.

5. They should have shortened the number of hours that a student stays in school. A respondent said that if classes start at 7 in the morning, it should end at 12 or one in the afternoon. That leaves student more time to study in the afternoon.

28

6. Breaks between classes should be lessen as this is a cause of long hours spent by student in school.
