Analytical Comparison

All three texts show similarities and differences. I will be comparing texts on the use of vocabulary, grammar and style. Text A is a spontaneous spoken conversation about the breed and behaviour of the avocet bird. Text B is a poem about a Hawk and Text C is a formal written article about Bird watching. The texts share the same lexis of ornithology. Text A differs from the other two texts as it is informally spoken and is spontaneous whereas Text B and C are written which gives written information about the lexis.

Text A is a piece of spontaneous speech however the speaker conveys various indications which shows listeners that the speaker is passionate about what he is talking about. The emphasis on words such as incre:::dibly show how the speaker uses elongation and emphasis to emphasise how unique the bird looks. This also adds tone to the speech catching the attention of the listeners. Listeners can see that that it is spontaneous from the repairs, actually well actually pairs (.) actually the repetition shows hesitation and contraction. This shows that the speaker hesitates and the micro pause shows how the speaker pauses to start again. There is turn taking between the two speakers. This shows how both speakers in put their ideas on the subject and is more like a conversation than a formal debate. The speakers use pre modifiers to describe the birds. elegant and gentle, these pre modifiers add a detailed image of the bird. This gives the audience a descriptive view of the bird. Text A shows a conversation between two speakers, Speaker BO seems to be most dominant whereas KH has her own opinions but also agrees with BO. The turn taking of the conversation shows how both speakers input there ideas on the subject. Text B and C are more solid as they have been planned so flow more. Text B is a poem about Hawks. Each stanza is 4 lines. It is written in first person which shows how the writer has chosen to write in the view of the bird. This differs from text A as text A is spoken by an observer and Text C is written by bird watchers. All texts show different aspects of the bird. The writer uses verbs and nouns to describe what the bird see and does. I sit in the top of the wood, This opening sentence runs straight into the description of the birds actions. The verb sit shows how the bird is proud and is relaxed on top of the wood. Poetical features are also used in this poem such as rhyming couplets, Between my hooked head and hooked feet: or in sleep rehearse perfect kills and eat. This adds rhyme and rhythm to the poem. In first person the writer describes how the bird dreams of killing and eating. The poet gives the bird a proud character, I hold creation in my foot. This shows how the poet tries to convey how the bird feels superior to everything thats below him and how the bird feels like he is dominant. it is all mine, the bird feels dominant as he has the power to circle and see everything from a high point making everything that is below him his own. This poem is

aimed at a wide audience whereas Text C has a more specific audience, which are people who are interested in ornithology. Text C is a formally written article which is factual based. The article has been split into sections as to the different information the readers would need about the bird. Similar to the other Texts, Text C has a lexical set of nature. This shows how the topic is carried on threw out the article. Different to Text A and B, this Text has the writers name in the opening sentence, Make the most of the Song Thrush, says Dominic Couzens. This is a catching opening as it opens with the comparison to a Song. The use of pronouns, you and we shows how the writer draws the readers into the article making it seem like its directed at them. In conclusion all three texts share the common topic of birds however all three Texts are spoken and written differently to give different aspects of the topic. Text A is effective in the way that the speakers give listeners an idea of the way the bird acts, Text B is set in first person in the view of the bird. This is effective as it gives readers an insight as to how the bird views everything around it. Text C is a descriptive factual based article which is used to inform the specific audience of bird watchers how the bird is different to other birds. All three texts show similarity as to the way the writers an speakers has described either the look or actions of the birds. By doing this they give the audience a clear image of the bird.
