KIWIBANK DEPLOYS NIGHTWATCHMAN AND STANDS TO SAVE THOUSANDS IN PC ENERGY COSTS

Shutting down computers at night will save Kiwibank up to NZ$24,570 in energy costs, reduce energy use by 163,800 kWh and reduce CO2 emissions by 32 tonnes in the first year

Challenge Kiwibank needed a solution to monitor and reduce computer energy consumption without disrupting users. It also needed to wake computers up out of business hours to patch them. A key requirement was to find a solution that integrated with Kiwibanks existing Microsoft Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) platform.

Solution NightWatchman from 1E was selected as the most fit-for-purpose solution.

No Longer Playing the Guessing Game

About Kiwibank Launched in 2002, Kiwibank is a 100% New Zealand owned bank with over 900 staff and branches located within more than 30 PostShops throughout the country. Kiwibank has grown into one of New Zealands most high-profile banks with 700,000 customers and was voted New Zealands most trusted bank three years in a row at the Readers Digest Trusted Brand awards. Sustainability is at the heart of Kiwibanks business. Basic energy meters were predicting that more than 50% of computers were being left on at nights and weekends at the New Zealand bank. The cost and energy savings associated with computer power management were very attractive and fit into the wider corporate sustainability goals at Kiwibank. Educating employees to switch computers off was one option but IT often needed computers to be left on so that patches and security updates could be applied at night rather than during working hours, says Esme Petelo, Head of IT Management Support, Kiwibank.

There was also a desire to measure IT energy use on an ongoing basis rather than relying on guess work so a decision was made to trial NightWatchman Enterprise an advanced PC power management solution from 1E. Kiwibank wanted the ability to centrally control and report on the power consumption of computers across Kiwibanks entire IT estate. NightWatchman was chosen for a number of reasons; the solution was proven in large-scale environments and integrated seamlessly with Kiwibanks existingMicrosoft Configuration Management (ConfigMgr) system. NightWatchman was also easily available through 1Es preferred New Zealand based distributor, Transend.

The project
Transend installed NightWatchman across a representative sample of computers. Data was collected over a four week period in order to benchmark PC energy consumption. The weekday behaviour report built into NightWatchman showed that during this baseline period, 52% of computers were left on overnight. Over the weekends 50% of computers were left on with only 9% being used. Kiwibank set three distinct policies for different areas of the business: Turn off at 7:00 pm and on again at 7:00 am for office-based staff Turn off at 10:00 pm and on again at 6:30 am for computers in the call center A small group of business-critical computers which need to run 24/7/365 did not have a power policy set on them and were therefore excluded. Setting a baseline of average computer energy use will enable Kiwibank to take accurate measurements over time. The bank will be able to compare results and see the savings they are making as well as identify any areas for potential improvement clearly.

External audit
Kiwibank sought funding by applying for an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) technology grant. As part of the grant application process, EECA commissioned a third-party verification of the projected energy, cost and CO2 emissions savings that Kiwibank stood to make following the deployment of the NightWatchman project. The independent verification, conducted by Energy and Technical Services Ltd confirmed that at an average of 15 cents per kWh Kiwibank would be saving approximately NZ$27.32 per computer per year.
