The context in which perception is made 1. The perceiver When a person looks at a target and try to interpret that, the perception is influenced by his personal characteristic. The major characteristics are, A. Attitudes Individual attitude affect perception. For example, Mr. X is interviewing some candidate for an important position in the organization i.e. negotiating contracts with suppliers, most of whom are male. Mr. X may feel that woman are not efficient enough in this job. This attitude will surely affect his perception of female candidate he interviews. B. Moods Mood of individual also strongly influence perception. When we are in happy mood we do things differently than when we are depressed. In a positive mood we form a positive impression of others. When in negative mood we evaluate others negatively. C. Motives Unsatisfied needs or motives can influence perception. For example in an organization when a boss who is unsecured may think to get the work done by his subordinate to get the credit and secure his position. His perception here is others are out to get my job. D. Self-Concept The self concept of individuals will influence his perception. For example when we are in positive self concept we tend to derive positive things in others. Else when we are in negative self concept we always pick negatives from others. E. F. Expectations Expectations also influence perception. This is because you see only what you are expected to see. For example when you are pre occupied with expectations we wish to see the same in others. 2. The target being perceived Characteristics of target being observed can influence what is perceived. Physical appearance plays an vital role in perception of others. Attractive and unattractive individuals are more likely noticed in groups. The perceiver will notice targets physical features like, height, weight, estimated age and gender. Attractive persons can impress the job interviewer in seeking the job. Most of the times verbal communication also affects our perception. We see targets voice, the language he speaks, his accent and make judgment based on these inputs. Nonverbal communication also conveys a great deal of information about others. For example the target is noticed by his facial contacts, facial expressions, body movements etc. 3 Context in which perception is made The situation in which interaction takes place between perceiver and target influence the perceivers impression of the target. For example when you meet your manager in his or her office affects your impression in a certain way than when you meet at restaurant. Similarly when a car sales person sales car, he may happily ask about your job, hobby and also may show interest in your choice of cars. Here you can not assume that his behavior reflects the sales persons personality. This is because the sales person is trying to sell you a car and in that particular situation he will behave will all customers in same manner.
