Introducing The Temple of Abzu deck

"The process of delving into the black abyss is to me the keenest form of fascination." - H.P. Lovecraft, in a letter to Frank Belknap Long, 1931 This article is about the Temple of Abzu deck which is a set of 99 cards created for people into Lovecraftian occultism and related areas but also for all people who at some point has been fascinated by the Yog-Sothothery; evoked through his writing. Lovecraft heard the call from the depths, through his dream-inspired style of storytelling, made it surface. A place full of strange and wondrous visions or alien and inhuman dark realities where ancient bubbling blasphemies moves about. Now, this dark side has always existed beyond the known, but Lovecraft was a master in calling it into the light so that his readers at least, could get glimpses of the weird or forbidden things that lurks in the dark. This deck is created in the spirit of this and is a tool to explore this inner darkness. Before going into the cards too deeply, I think some background about how the deck came into existence might be interesting. So, lets say we start there and at some point I'll reconnect to the deck and explain more about it and its uses. There was this strange dream I had a few years ago about spirals and fractals that inspired me to create and experiment with a numerology system based upon the famous Fibonacci sequence. There are many interesting things one could go into about this famous numerical sequence, but for this article let me just mention that it shows up in patterns all over nature and that it also comes up a lot in chaos theory. After finding a suitable mapping against the English Alphabet rather quickly, I tested it out and then put it aside as I was in the middle of some other big projects at the time. Little did I know what I had found. Some time later there was a discussion in an on-line forum about applying Gematria (numerology) to the works of H.P Lovecraft. I decided to dust the system off and started to work with it together with people from the forum group. Over time, it slowly dawned on me that there was something special with this system and some results were almost telling me outright: "Hey you got something good here!"

The TOA 3 Card Spread

"Past, present, future, all are one in Yog-Sothoth." H. P. Lovecraft, "The Dunwich Horror"

Now, before we go further I must clarify a few things. First of all, with work I mean calculating through words and phrases and searching for interesting patterns. Secondly, with interesting patterns I mean things that excites the mind somehow and therefore from the view of the magician is energized and can by used by him (or her) to direct the will. The 'found patterns' can be looked at as a mind map upon were one's magical universe can be built and interestingly; as the patterns are based upon stuff mainly related to Lovecraft, one could actually look at this as a map of his writing and, by taking this one step further; a map of the things that inspired him and thus as a way into the dark wonders and horrors that spawned through him. There is one big downside to working with Gematria and that is that many people don't like to go into the calculating part more deeply than, for example, calculating the value of one's name and comparing it with calculations already done by others. This means that they never get the feeling for the interesting patterns that has been found. But then one day after working with the system for nearly a year, I got this idea, that made the findings accessible to all in a more intuitive way. What I'm talking about is the Temple of Abzu Deck. Let us first dwell on the name. Abzu is an old name for the Abyss that in ancient Mesopotamian belief was looked upon as a freshwater ocean under the earth. Abzu therefore was the source of all streams, lakes, rivers and wells. The Lord of Abzu is the god Enki (also known as Oannes and Dagon) who is closely associated with wisdom, arts and crafts and also with the practice of the magical arts. Enki had a Temple in Eridu that was known as E.abzu, "the temple or house of Abzu. I hope you can see what a great representation, this underwater sea, is: the source from where the waters of the earth flows forth, what exists and moves beyond our conscious awareness, and that which comes to view in dreams or moments of inspiration and so on and thus influences us from beyond. This is the realm from were Lovecraft drew his inspiration, this is the realm where whispers are heard from strange shadows and it is from this place the Great Old Ones molded the dreams of the first man. There are some numerical reasons that exist for the name too and even though I'm trying my best to stay away from calculations in this article let us at least examine this briefly. Abzu has the same numerical value as the name of the Gematria system we already have touched on (it's called the 'All-in-One' Gematria) and another word with this value is 'Fibonacci'. Notice how the name for the Gematria system 'All-In-One' is also a title for Yog-Sothoth (the All-in-One and the One-inAll). A variation of the spelling of Abzu (Apsu) happens to have the same value as various names for the Abyss like the word 'Abyss' in itself but also like 'Abussos' (abyss or bottomless pit). The value in question is 11 and if you're at all into occultism you could hardly have missed how closely connected this number is to knowledge, magic and the 'false sephira' Daath and interestingly the word for 11 ( 'eleven') has the same value as the previously mentioned words: 'Abzu', 'All-in-One' and 'Fibonacci'. Finally 'Magic' = 11 and 'Knowledge' that has the value 29 becomes by standard numerological reduction 11 too ( 2 + 9 = 11). The cards in the deck each have two phrases (printed on the top and bottom of the card) and in the middle some art. Both the art and phrases are in some way connected to the number of the card but they still leave much of the interpretation to the user (sort of in the spirit of the Rorschach inkblot test used in psychology) and this has been one of the main ideas when creating the deck. This means, that the deck is perfect for intuitive readings. When you use the cards you will call forth inner pictures and feelings that can be used to further explore them and the inner dimensions they are connected with. Users will through this experience notice how closely connected to the underlying forces of Lovecraft's work this deck really is.

The 3-Card or the 3Past-PresentPast-Present-Future spread has become a popular spread at Tarot sites so I decided to create it for the Temple of Abzu deck too. It may give you a hint about how to approach a situation or problem by looking at the past, future present and future energy that surrounds it in the form of a 3 card spread.

Think about a question or situation and click the button to view your spread. Let's see what the Lovecraftian inspired oracle will bring you..

Using it evokes ghostly scenes or entities from the realms beyond our 'normal' awareness and I look at the cards as links or gateways to those astral areas. When I created the deck I looked at it as the creation of a tool that could be used to explore Lovecraftian occultism, art, dreams and so on, and I'm sure people will come up with many other interesting ways to use the deck too.

If you want to know more about the deck check out my site at: WWW.BLACKALCHEMY.NET There you will find a gallery of the Temple of Abzu deck and also an online calculator that you can use if you want to try out the All-in-One Gematria the deck is based on. The Left Hand Path: Tantra

Introduction I'm versed in LHP Tantra, and thought sharing this information would be useful here, especially as it correlates to the human experience and higher states of consciousness. I also have a small volume library of texts, which focus on the escalations of sexual energy. Tantra, in general - is a focus on the self, as well as how one understands the universe. It also focuses on the illusions of reality, and what we perceive as true reality. The idea of "Left-hand Path" originates in Tantra. Spiritual practice is on the 'Right-Hand' position, where the carnal is on the 'Left-Hand'. An example of this is when a couple engages in the spiritual practice of Tantra, it is customary for the woman to sit on the right hand side of her male counter-part. When it's time to engage in the physical act of Tantra, she switches to the left. Tantra focus, is to enhance the human experience. In essence, it aids one in developing superhuman powers. All senses are heightened, and the realizations made are that ecstatic existence is not only possible, but probable with practice of this tradition. Tantra is useful for a lagging libido. Aids like Viagra, or other ED drugs may no longer be needed. The libido is corrected and enhanced, on levels - not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as they are interwoven. The psyche has an abyssal thirst for (com) union, even if that union is with an idea. Androgyny born, the magical child of Shatki and Shiva; the magnetic woman and electric man (not gender specific). As much as I have a distaste for the duality and polarity of ideas, in this context it aids one in understanding the roles of each. The Yin and Yang, Shatki and Shiva - each person plays the role of both Shatki and Shiva; by allowing the rise and fall of sexual energy to be transferred. So, what you are doing is practicing the withholding of ejaculation but still having multiple orgasms. It builds and builds, rises and falls. Magnetic and Electric, Electric and Magnetic. Harmony on multiple levels. As the union intensifies, you develop a higher sensory awareness. The pathway to developing the 6th sense. This energy stirs up the kundalini energy; and the result is a heightened life experience, prolonged orgasm, and ritual ecstasy. Whether you remember the entire Tantric lingo, proper specific ritual practices matters little. It's the idea, which resonates in you that's more important. There are methodologies, which can be utilized without saying a word. Even if you are the only one experiencing them, and your partner has no idea. Your partner will 'know' based on the experience they have with you.

I had recently posted a blog on MySpace about the most important thing about sex. A recent discussion I had a few weeks back, floored me. A couple voiced the idea that the journey was not important at all, but the destination of orgasm. They also have a mediocre sex life, which they avoid - so it's no wonder they hold this idea! I posted the blog, to get feedback from the general public about what they consider to be the most important. The scales were tipped in my favor. Most held that it was the journey, vs. the destination and surprisingly enough there were more people than I expected that stated that having an orgasm wasn't all that important to them. It was the rise and fall of energy, and the sexual experience that they craved. "Stay with the fire of the beginning, and avoid the poison of the end." -Tantric principle Explosion, without ejaculation makes any further sexual activity less than satisfying, and often a discomfort. In tantric practice, you are having implosions of sexual energy, so that with each continued sexual activity, the experience is not only satisfying, but raises your libido even higher, hours and hours of this is possible. It's a strict discipline, and it takes focus and understanding the principles. Mental play Physical play (Control) Attachment Independence Spiritual dimension Hyper-consciousness

The Left Hand Path: Tantra Mental Play Will Will is the true, higher and liberated self. When Aleister Crowley focuses on the Will Do as thou wilt in Thelema, what is he focusing on specifically? He is speaking of the true self. Tantric Will, is true self, rather than a false self created by compulsions and whimsical impulses. Self-Will, is liberation. It is awakening. Self-Will breaks down the prison walls of false-self, by removing the societal ideas of normal sexuality. Anything outside of what society deems as normal is persecuted, ostracized, forced under-ground and often snuffed-out: imprisonment of those seeking the Will of the self. Sexual taboos are becoming an obsolete idea, but it takes the work of the Self-Will, to make such realizations. In Tantra, Self-Will must be sought with sincerity and true intentions. Otherwise, you will never truly be liberated from the indoctrination of society regarding what is normal. You will reside in your prison and die; never having experienced an ecstatic existence. If you are experiencing a less-than-satisfying life; seek liberation and Self-Will. Will, is the way. Tantric Will places the responsibility of ones actions, into the hands of the true self. If you are not willing to carry the responsibility, there will be no true tantric evolution of the self. Tantric Will evokes higher spiritual ideas, and requires your utmost attention. We come into this world through the act of sex, we have sex, but do we truly experience it? In most societies, from our early childhood we are taught to hide our bodies, to not think impure thoughts and that sex is only for procreation with someone we love. So how can we ever know the true sexual experience? Anything deemed impure by society, is a form of deviance, frowned upon and forced into shadow.

Will, is the true, higher, liberated self. Intentional acts of Will, have magical power

So, how do we break down barriers and doubts so that Self-Will can be realized? The invocation of higher spiritual ideas, such as the Cult of Cthulhu theology, is one of many ships to be taken across the sea. The exploration of philosophical ideas about the self is key in taking the first step in awakening from a deep sleep; and existing in a false reality. There are a plethora of tools available to you, such as human psychology, meditative practice, transcendental experience, and creative expression just to name a few. There are no limitations, as the creator, you are free to be inspired by any idea that provokes you into the state of examination to include inventing them. Remember yourself, Nothing is True, and Everything is Permitted! Intentional acts of Will, have magical power. Unconscious, droning is the pathway to death. You can have a long, prosperous and ecstatic life if you choose it!

Self-Will!

But if you do choose, you can begin the mental play with a partner. Stage 1: introspection, submissiveness Stage 2: stimulation, eager-control In Tantra, fantasy is not just conjuring up images in ones imagination its much more than that. It requires control, focus and applying ideas to the Self-Will. All these ideas we hold, these self-created delusions are working towards something; or at least they should be. If you venerate a fictional character, your focus on this character gives it life. It makes it very real to you. The fictional characters of the HP Lovecraft stories, are real to you, they exist in the dimensions of your imagination. The same premise applies to Tantric Fantasy. Breathing technique, communicating ideas, and applying fantasy occurs as an organic process during the act of Tantric Sex, but it is in no way rehearsed. Tantric Fantasy, is not to be confused with roleplaying; though role playing plays a role in Tantric Sex. Mental play: this is the time to put your archetypal structures to work for you. Remember, your partner may not be aware of your Tantric skill, but through their experience will have had a Tantric experience. As mentioned in Left-Hand Path: Tantra, Introduction Tantra is an exchange of roles: Shatki and Shiva, Shiva and Shatki; even if your partner is not aware of the transfer of responsibility. You might begin as Shatki, introspective and submissive, then cycle into Shiva as you are stimulated, and seek eager-control. The opposite may occur, in that your partner begins as Shatki, so you then take the role and responsibility of Shiva. Back and fourth, the mental play occurs, continues rise and fall, fall and rise of this idea in action. There are mental exercises you may perform, which can be borrowed from a variety of sources. You are not limited to the eastern philosophies of Tantra. Fantasy is slipping into your archetypes, and becoming. There are so many techniques to explore, spiritual ideas, visualizations, body mechanics, magical voice and invocation. Ask yourself this question: How can you communicate 1000 ideas without saying a word? The possibilities are endless. The mind is the sea; ships may cross it but will never find an end to its explorations.

The Left-Hand Path: Tantra Control

How can you communicate 1000 ideas without saying a word? MENTAL PLAY

Separating Ejaculation from Orgasm Yes, its possible and its in practice right now as you hold your Vajra (Tantric for penis) by men who know this secret. This doesnt just apply to men, but to women as well. Most often women have an orgasm explosion vs. implosion and continuing sex becomes a discomfort and they have to stop, and yes this occurs when women masturbate as well. So girls, hold on to your Yonis! (Yoni is Tantric for vagina). What could be enjoyed for hours on end is diminished to 20 minutes at best. As discussed in The Left-Hand Path: Tantra, Mental Play there is implosive and explosive orgasm.

The implosive orgasm is based upon control but without the constraint of withholding the desire for orgasm and pleasure. Explosive orgasm is when you ejaculate and for many cant continue playtime is over. Inner orgasm decreases arousal slightly, but you are also less sensitive, and less inclined to release. This enables you to continue for hours on end. To experience the inner-orgasm you only need to remember one word: RAMPER (word association: romper, taking a romp in the sack) Relax Awareness Measure yourself Pace yourself Energy circulation and Ride the wave Relax, take your time. Enjoy all the sensations. Porn-style sex is fun, enjoyable and allows you to release your beast; but youll most likely release ejaculate and end your journey short. Relaxation leads to awareness, heightens all of your senses and helps you focus on the pleasure you experience with yourself (masturbation) or with your partner, without the constraints of being on guard, and creating unnecessary tension. Pacing yourself, the pleasure-principle. You can enjoy the ride, without concentrating on the destination. The rise and fall of the sexual energy you produce by experiencing the pleasure. Standing at the Event Horizon, looking over the edge but you dont cross it; not yet. The Energy and circulation, is walking the line, just before you step over to the other side. Taking that energy and experiencing it throughout your entire body, not just your genitals. Riding the wave of ecstasy. A sexual meditation. You are having S.E.X. not sex. A Sensual Energy Exchange. Arousal, leads to letting go. And letting go is good, but if you want an epic sexual experience, there is control involved. When you think of the idea of control, you immediately think of constraints. Change the way you think, the Will-Self determines that control is the pathway to ecstasy. If you commit the idea to muscle memory, you wont have to think about it, at least not consciously. Your subconscious knows what to do, and you are letting go by enjoying the sexual experience in an uninhibited way, but without ejaculating, to end the experience short. Techniques There are several resources for developing your control technique. I wont suggest any one source, because I believe in developing your own system. Ive been calling mine Sexxx Magic for years, but I also call it Sin-Tantric, and a battery of other names depending on my mood. RAMPER! RAMPER! RAMPER! RAMPER! RAMPER! RAMPER!

The Left-Hand Path: Tantra Attachment

As discussed in The Left-Hand Path: Tantra, Control utilizing RAMPER, you maintain control and allow yourself to experience the orgasm as an implosive force, enjoying the journey rather than focusing on the destination. Through the Awareness aspect of RAMPER, this is your attachment to the physical, while experiencing the euphoria of your heightened senses. If you are not aware of what you are doing, and what you are experiencing, this can lead to detachment. Much like letting go of the string of a helium balloon, and letting it float away. If you detach during the sexual experience, you lose focus and control. This leads to premature ejaculation, and ending the journey earlier than desired. Have you ever had sex, and gotten lost in your own head, only to be returned by your sex partner saying you seem like you are a million miles away or you could be having sex with anyone, its like Im not even here, whats with you? You have experienced detachment. So how do you stay attached? Focus. This is why Tantric sex is different than your traditional sex. Sure, during traditional sex you are focusing on enjoying yourself, but even if you are a tentative partner you can detach. Even during masturbation, you can detach. So, if you find yourself having a 5 minute quickie vs. the hours of passion you promise, you could be detached from the experience. How do you focus? By learning techniques to stay attached to the experience (See suggested research list: The Left-Hand Path: Tantra, Control). Commit it to muscle memory, so you are not focused on being focused, but on the experience itself, riding the wave implosion after implosion, until its climax. Keep this idea in mind: Stay with me.

Stay with me

The Left-Hand Path: Tantra Independence It is said that when the god Shiva, the embodiment of pure consciousness, merged in sexual union with the goddess Shakti, the embodiment of pure energy, their Tantric embrace resulted in the creation of the Universe. How can one speak of independence, when the act of sexual intercourse requires a dependency on two people? Quite simply: each person works independently on his/her own personal journey. You may be concerned with the journey of your partner, but you act independently. You take on the archetypal identities of both Shatki and Shiva, based on your awareness of your attachment. You know when to be Shiva, and when to be Shatki. If your partner is working with the Tantric principles, he/she will also be working independently filling the roles as they cycle. During the cycles which occur during masturbation, you work independently slipping into each archetype as they cycle through. You know when passive arousal is needed, and when aggressive arousal is needed.

RAMPER! When Aleister Crowley created his Moon Child, a completely etheric child, it was through the roles of Shatki and Shiva. He created the universe. As discussed in The Left-Hand Path: Introduction, you have specific responsibilities. If you are not willing to carry the weight of these responsibilities how can you ever expect to experience an ecstatic existence? The Tantric Will-Self? It is your responsibility to work independently towards your goals. If each person accepted their personal responsibilities, many of the pit-falls of our species could have been leaps. Co-dependence has no place in Tantra, nor in the hearts and minds of those that walk the Lefthand path.

Left-Hand Path: Tantra Spiritual Dimension Trying to explain spirituality to a person, who rejects the idea of the sense of spirit, is often difficult. As a Weak Atheist (Strong Agnostic) myself, people often have an adverse reaction to the idea that Atheists (of any type) understand spirituality, let alone experience it. Most often spirituality is connected to religion, and more and more people are stepping away from organized religion, and its dogma. To me, feeling spiritual is the sense of awe one feels from ecstatic experience. This is what Im referring to, in the context of Tantra and its Spiritual Dimensions. Naturally, you experience awe during sex, but the tantric experience offers dimensions of awe: implosion to explosion. Its a journey, not a destination. When people speak of mind-blowing sex, what are they really talking about? The endless dimensions of awe one experiences when drowning in the vast abyss of ecstasy. This is where your personal aesthetic really comes in to play. All of your fantasies, Tantric and otherwise, are put into action in the dimensional space of your imagination. If you can imagine it, experience it and its biological result is awe this is the spiritual dimension in LHP Tantra. Taboos are nonexistent in the Spiritual Dimension. You are your Will-Self in the Spiritual Dimension, free of any constraints, barriers and falsehoods. You are liberated. Left-Hand Path: Tantra Hyper-Consciousness Hyper-consciousness is beyond standard consciousness. Just because you are conscious, doesnt mean you are awake. You are droning about like a zombie, or a machine following commands. Hyper-consciousness is beyond this realm of existence, its often referred to as the third dimension. The first dimension (or 1D) is what we are aware of on the surface. The second dimension (or 2D) is what we think we know beyond what we can see, and the third dimension (or 3D) is what we know to be true, our personal gnosis based on experience.

You are your Will-Self in the Spiritual Dimension, free of any constraints, barriers and falsehoods. You are liberated.

It doesnt matter if I write a volume of texts on how Tantra works and why, you have to experience it to be able to relate to the idea. When youve experienced the multi-dimensions of awareness and ecstasy and become super-human, youll know youve reached hyperconsciousness. Your gnosis is unverifiable; it becomes your UPG (unverifiable personal gnosis). It doesnt matter how vividly you explain it, no one will be able to relate to it, because they can not experience your experiences. Your Tantric experience is uniquely different than the next person. The excitement in which you try to explain it, will peak interest. Perhaps Ive peaked your interest with these short essays on the subject. I cant tell you exactly how to have a tantric experience, but I can guide you to it. All you need to do, is get aboard the ship and ride the waves across the sea. What lurks in the depths of the endless ocean, is mystery. Knowledge hidden in plain view; Left-Hand Path Tantra, is an occult practice. Make the connections; develop your own sex rites using the Cult of Cthulhu theology. The orgies are forth-coming, in fact youll be beating them off with a jade stick. Ia, Ia the 3rd Dimension! Wanting to contribute to The Green Trapezoid I asked, What should I write about? Cora'Sahn then hit me with these questions as a primer: What is the Occult? What does it mean to cult members? What do they consider the occult? How does one apply occult knowledge? What is occult about the cult of Cthulhu? So I will attempt to answer these questions as precisely as possible. These are my answers. They dont necessarily reflect the view of the CoC, its leaders, or its members. They may agree or disagree with the statements that I write. I would just like to take the time to clarify that being a member of the CoC does not imply that we all agree about everything. I just want to reiterate that I am not speaking for the entire group even though the entire CoC may agree. With that stated lets begin. What is the Occult? Like many occultists know, occult refers to hidden knowledge. But what is this hidden knowledge? To me the hidden knowledge is the knowledge of Nothing and Everything. (No, these arent typos; its like the difference between god and God.) Where do I start? From the Beginning, thats where to start. Solid Reality is a manifestation of Consciousness. Everything is Consciousness. Consciousness is all that there is. But, ironically Consciousness is Nothingness. So it logically follows that if Everything is Consciousness, and Consciousness is Nothingness, then Everything is Nothingness. Im sure I may have lost a few readers here. But my only advice is read Existentialist Philosophy, The Upanishads, Taoist and Zen Philosophy. But there is a problem with this though. Those who have experienced it understand and those who havent only understand very little. Its like a virgin reading about sex. They may understand, but the experience to solidify it isnt there. Im also not here to convince you that what Im writing is true. You must test this for yourself. And those who really test it out and work diligently will see that I am not lying. Those who give half-assed attempts will not see the truth. Nor will those who cannot suspend judgment and remain open to new ideas and experience. For those people who have already decided it would take an overdose on psychedelics to induce an ego-loss experience. But even then these people would chalk the experience up to being on drugs instead of taking the experience itself into consideration. If Consciousness is all there is then it doesnt matter what induced an experience. It only matters that you had the experience. Reality is merely a game Consciousness plays with itself, to get to know itself. To me this is Cthulhu. Cthulhu is the manifestation of Consciousness for we are Cthulhus dream. Ia, Ia, Cthulhu Fhtagen!!! We are merely dream characters in his Consciousness. And to realize this is one of the first steps towards Moksha, Freedom, Liberation, Nirvana, or Godhood by what ever name you may call it. This is what occult means to me; it is a means toward complete freedom of mind, body, and soul if you will. Well thats all fine and fuckin dandy, but what fuckin good is it?

Its only worth a damn to those who choose to make it worth a damn. Granted, Spiritual Liberation and Godhood doesnt top everyones to-do list. But there are quite a few of us who believe its the most important fuckin thing in this world. Like anything in this world it is only as valuable as the individual deems it. So one must decide for their self how much it is worth and if it is worth pursuing. Too many of the members here in the CoC it is highly valuable if not the most valuable thing in our lives. I, like many others in the CoC, want Ultimate Freedom and, at the very least, to Evolve Consciously. We want to Wake Up. We want to fully realize that we are Cthulhus Dream, because once that happens that is when the real fun starts. Many people feel that we are in Lifes Waiting Room waiting for it to really begin. Of those there are fewer who realize that the Waiting is an Illusion and more of a Jail Cell. Even fewer realize that we have locked ourselves up and that we are our own jailers. And once again, even fewer of us know that the door is unlocked and that we just need to walk through the damn thing. I am one of the few I know to have realized and experienced this. I have walked through the door only to run back to the safety of my prison cell. Yes, we are all institutionalized and old habits are hard to break. Hell, after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed many slaves continued to willingly be slaves, for they knew nothing else. They had adjusted to being slaves and they became comfortable. Freedom isnt always an easy thing to deal with; sometimes there are too many choices and too many responsibilities. This is why certain freedoms get relinquished to others be it Man, Government, or God. Occult knowledge is the knowledge that we have signed our own Emancipation Proclamation of Consciousness & Soul, and that we free ourselves from our own prison cell. What is Occultism? What makes one an Occultist? Is an Occultist Pagan? Is a Pagan an Occultist? Im often asked these questions. Pagan is an umbrella term. I myself consider Occultism to fall under that umbrella, but it can also be excluded from it; based on the personal preferences of the individual. I know many Occultists that do not consider Occultism to be Pagan, and Pagans who do not consider Paganism to be the Occult. The Occultist studies to seek truth. This alone does not make one an Occultist. The study of hidden things, truth in plain sight; cryptic truth - but only identified by those with personal gnosis. This gnosis is often unverifiable (UPG); and is Occult knowledge. Magic is a theme included under the Occultist umbrella, but the study or practice of 'magical systems' is not the whole of Occultism. So a Witch or Warlock, for instance can consider themselves occultists, but exclude him/her from the label as well. Occultists are philosophers in their own right, in that they have a passion and love for knowledge. The knowledge they seek, is weird, strange, and hidden from the rest of the world. It presents strange ideas, utilizes weird symbolism and lurks in shadow. Acquiring all of this knowledge is to examine the 'hidden' vs. what is displayed in plain view. I offer this example: The Apple On the outer surface you can look at it, and say 'yep, that's an apple'. It has all the outer characteristics that identify it as an apple. So it must be an apple. The occult knowledge of the apple, is not only the inner-workings of the fruit, but the apple as an allegory, a metaphor, and idea - the apple is so abstract that we can't honestly say that its an apple until we have examined it, reflected upon it, used it, and drawn personal gnosis from it. The apple can be a lifes work. I have found it meaningful in my own life I use this symbol often (www.the-poison-apple.com) It offers conceptualized understanding of highly complex ideas. The truth of the apple is hidden, cryptic and mysterious to me, this is Occultism.
