Presidents Message
Dear All, Have any of you ever thought about what the word connoisseur really means. Perhaps not, but on the eve of the Sawgrass Wine Judging and Uncorked, An Evening with the Sawgrass Wine Festival Judges, I thought it might be interesting to explore this word and how it can relate to your chamber membership. First, the word means to "to be acquainted with" or "to know somebody/something." It also can mean a person who has a great deal of knowledge about the fine arts or an expert judge in the matters of taste. Obviously the latter definition fits our esteemed judges who will evaluate the wines we will serve at the Sawgrass Wine Festival which will be held this fall. By the way, there are still tickets available for Uncorked, An Evening with the Sawgrass Wine festival Judges if you want to taste some of the best wines available. What I really want to do is talk about the first definition to be acquainted with or to know someone or something. I even want to narrow that further to try to evaluate whether or not you are a Chamber connoisseur meaning do you really know what the Chamber can do for you both personally and professionally? First, let us look at your personal life as it relates to the Chamber. I would say that the biggest benefit from participation is the friendships you will make that go beyond the scope of just a business contact. In addition, attending Chamber events, while good for business, is also a lot of fun; so much so they can make up a large part of your social life. Second, your professional life can only by enhanced by the Chamber if you know what tools the organization offers to you and take advantage of those that are meaningful in terms of growing your business. There is not enough space in this column to talk about all, but I encourage you to check out http://pontevedrachamber.org/a bout-us/presidents-message/ for all the Chamber member benefits. I do want to mention a few that I think are really important ones: 1. pontevedachamber.org Our brand new website is interactive and user friendly and 50 A1A North, Suite 102 Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 904-285-2004 info@pontevedrachamber.org Board of Directors: Christine Adams ~ Rogers Tower, P.A. ~ 473-1400 Darby Brower ~ Brower Financial Group ~ 280-1669 Felicia Cox ~ Florida Bank ~ 5437055 Phyllis Frankel ~ Phyllis Frankel Realty ~ 275-0125 Vincent Grassia ~ The Ponte Vedra Recorder ~ 285-8831 Dr. Erika Hamer ~ Ponte Vedra Wellness Center ~ 273-2691 Craig Hamilton ~ Pineapple Post ~ 3. John Blazon received his Master Sommelier diploma from the International Court of Master Sommeliers during a fall 2004 exam in London, England. The title of Master Sommelier is reserved for individuals who successfully complete all four levels of the Court of Master Sommeliers Educational program which takes years. The Master Sommelier distinction is the only internationally recognized credential for individuals in the beverage sales and service field and John is one of only 103 Master Sommeliers in the United States. In 2008, he was elected to serve on the board for the Court of Master Sommeliers and was also appointed as an inaugural board member to the American Guild of Sommeliers. John spent eight years in Williamsburg, VA where he opened and directed Fords Colony Country Club towards an AAA Five Diamond Rating and Best of Award of Excellence wine program. His passion for wine education was recognized throughout the state when he joined the Robins Wine Cellars serving as General Sales Manager throughout the Southeastern part of Virginia. Most recently, John was the wine director for Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, FL. During his thirteen year tenure there, he was responsible for the development of all standards for wine programs including product selection, the introduction of new concepts and the training of service personnel at all Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts. In 2003, Johns efforts were applauded by the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF), which awarded its Americas Best Wine Lists Special Innovation honor to Walt Disney World Resort at the Monterey Wine Festival. In addition, Sant magazine named him its 2003 Wine Professional of the Year. John continued to develop educational courses for Disneys food and beverage team which included the Disney sommelier certificate program in partnership with the Court of Master Sommeliers. More than 750 cast members passed the introductory certificate level since the training began in 2000, which is a greater number than any food and beverage organization in the world. In 2006, he was recognized by The STARWINE International Wine Competition as their Sommelier of the Year. Ryanne Carrier is the newest addition to Sea Islands Sommelier team. Her career can be split into two categories, food and wine, and she has committed significant amounts of time to her love of both. Ryanne grew up in Pittsburgh, PA; however, it was the move to Chicago, IL, that became the catalyst for her foray into cooking. Here career was influenced by working the front of the house in both the traditional Greek diner as well as a small French bistro, but most significant was the influence of a friends mother who was a three star chef in the Chicago area. In 1997, Ryanne attended Kendall College in Chicago where she attained certifications in both Professional Cookery and Baking and Pastry. While in school, she staged in every restaurant possible, eventually landing a permanent position in pastry at Blackbird Restaurant. In 2000, Ryanne ventured back to the front of the house to become the manager of Stained Glass Wine Bar and Bistro in Evanston, IL. Here she began working under the tutelage of owner Michael Weyna, and began a serious hands-on approach to the world of wine. In 2003, Ryanne became the Pastry Chef at 312 Chicago, a regional Italian restaurant in Chicagos loop and this position taught her to focus on classic flavors their flavor and technique.. In 2005, Ryanne, along with her husband David, moved to Apalachicola, Florida and opened Avenue Sea Restaurant. She developed an extensive wine list, monthly wine events, as well as the pastry and cheese menus. The restaurant received 4 Hats in the Tallahassee Democrat, was recognized by Gourmet Magazine as one of the top 36 Destination Restaurants in the World. Other accolades includes several mentions in Garden and Gun, Southern Living, Coastal Living, The Boston Globe, Washington Post, AJC and Saveur. Dr. Barry H.
