Motive power is a broad expression that covers the numerous sectors related to the
transportation industry. The industry is experiencing an exciting transformation as demand
has increased for vehicles and equipment that not only offer superior performance and
value, but are also environmentally-friendly. For those entering or moving up in the
motive power industry, these demands provide unprecedented opportunity. The need for
qualified graduates by equipment manufacturers, automotive, truck and heavy equipment
dealers and the parts industry is higher than ever, and so are the wages. The School of
Motive Power Technology at Fanshawe is keeping pace with change and is recognized as
a leader in providing the industry with necessary skilled employees.

Key Partnerships
General Motors and John Deere have partnered with Fanshawe College to offer
apprenticeships and training programs to meet the demands of these industry specialists.

Apprenticeship Training
Certified tradespeople must complete both in school and on-the-job training. We offer
the in-school component for Agricultural Equipment Technician, Agricultural Equipment
Technician (John Deere Ag Tech), Auto Body and Collision Damage Repairer, Auto Body
Repairer, Automotive Service Technician, Automotive Service Technician (GM-ASEP),
Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Motive Power Technician (Automotive), Motive Power
Technician (Diesel) and Truck and Coach Technician. If you want to become an apprentice,
you must find an employer who is willing to train you on the job and be supervised by a
qualified tradesperson.

Apprenticeship Programs
Apprenticeship programs require an employer/sponsor. The employer must register the apprentice with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and
Universities at 217 York St., Suite 201, London, Ontario, N6A 5P9, 519-675-7788. A typical apprentice might require 600 to 700 hours of classroom time
(an eight or ten week block of time each year for three years). This format is called ‘block release’.

Agricultural Equipment Automotive Service Technician

Aircraft Structural Repair
Technician
- is an exciting program now offered at Fanshawe in partnership with Sault College.
On the leading edge of aircraft maintenance, this program gives students the
expertise, knowledge and understanding of both aircraft structural repairs and
manufacturing techniques. Techniques, standards, and practices conform to
guidelines established by aircraft manufacturers and outlined in maintenance and
structural repair manuals. Students will develop skills and knowledge through
extensive hands-on training. Practical experience will be gained by completing 45
to 60 projects associated with aircraft fuselages, control surfaces, wings, composite
panels, plastics and sealing procedures. Due to industry growth, the curriculum
and training processes have been developed to accommodate the needs of both the
aircraft manufacturing and repair sectors.

Graduates of the Aircraft Structural Repair Technician program can find careers
in the repair, overhaul and modification of commercial aircraft in Canada.
Program instructors, working together with the on-campus Placement Office,
have established an excellent employment network, which will help to secure
employment opportunities for future graduates.
