Annual tire burnout moves to
Mecosta this year
MECOSTA — Tires will smoke and the
smell of burnt rubber will fill the air next
month as the annual Evart Burnout moves
to its new location in Mecosta.
The burnout features motorized veichles
standing in place while spinning their tires,
causing smoke and sometimes the tires to
blowout. The burnout has been featured
in Evart for the past seven years but will
move to Mecosta this year on July 2.
Event coordinator Bill Bradley moved
the event behind his business, Bradley’s
Hardware, in Mecosta after the City of
Evart said the pervious location was not
meant to hold the event.
“It was in an industrial park,” Bradley said.
“(The City of Evart) said an industrial park
cannot have (the burnout) there anymore.”
In previous years, the burnout has seen
2,100 in attendance, but Bradley is
expecting fewer this year because of the
new location.
“We are hoping to see 750 (attendees).
That is our goal,” Bradley said.
East Hayes Street in Mecosta will be
closed off for the event. Bleachers located
behind Bradley’s hardware and across the
street in an open lot will hold roughly 500
people and will be directly in front of the
burnout zone.
Bradley said no one will be allowed behind
the cars and the burnout zone will be
surrounded by cement blocks and snow
fences to ensure safety.
One by one, cars will move into the
burnout zone and will have 30 seconds to
spin their tires. Based on the amount of
smoke and crowd enthusiasm, first, second
and thrid place winners will be picked and
receive a cash prize.
The cars are limited to a 30 second spin
because the location does not have
a cement cushion like the previous
location which allows the tires to burn out
completely. Bradley is planning to repair
any cracks in the road that may occur from
the event.
Bradley chose the Fourth of July weekend
because he hopes it will attract people who
may be vacationing in the area. He also
hopes to see the Mecosta Days Festival
take the event over in the years to come.
The Burnout starts at 6 p.m. and will end in
time to watch the Mecosta fireworks. Food
vendors will be on hand and admission is
free.
Registration is from 5:15 to 5:45 p.m.
on July 2 and costs $15. All vehicles are
welcome.

Committee seeks quilts for
show
BIG RAPIDS — Alice Bandstra has been
making quilts for more than 30 years. A
resurgence in quilting during the 1976 U.S.
bicentennial celebration piqued her interest
in the hobby. Since then she has crafted
countless quilts, that have been given to
friends and family and displayed others
around her Big Rapids home.
“I had tried some other kids of sewing
and crafts,” Bandstra said. “But quilting
interested me because of the workmanship
that goes along with it.”

Bandstra chairs the committee that
organizes an event for quilters from
Mecosta County and beyond to display
their works and share ideas and
techniques with other enthusiasts.
The show — which is held every two
years — will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on
Saturday, June 11 and from 11 a.m. to 4
p.m. on Sunday, June 12. Quilts will be
displayed at Big Rapids Middle School
and the Old Jail. Admission is $5, which
is good for both days at both locations.
Numerous vendors also will be displaying
quilts, patterns and supplies available for
purchase.
Quilters can register through May 1 to
display their creations at the show. Entry

“Quilting is a very popular craft that has
developed into more of an art form,”
Bandstra said. “We thought it would be fun
to start a quilt show in Big Rapids.”
Organizer Phyllis Jacobs expects this
year’s show to be the largest to date. More
than 150 quilted items were displayed
at the first show in 2007, with about
250 people in attendance. Two years
later, more than 210 quilted items were
displayed and attendance was doubled.
“The object of the event is for quilters to
display what they’ve been working on,”
Jacobs said.
Awards will be presented for the top quilts
of different sizes, including king/queen, full/
twin, wall-hanging or crib sized, and other
quilted items. A “Best of Show” award also
will be presented, with the winner receiving
a stay at the Inn at the Rustic Gate.
Vendor and author, Debra Henniger, of
the Chicago area, will display quilts she’s
made and lecture on her book, “Hobo
Quilts.” The book shows historic photos
and letters dating back to the 1930s.
The quilting show also will feature the
Ladies of the Library Group, of Midland,
who will discuss and demonstrate an
appliqué technique that has become the
group’s specialty.

Stay on Track to Your
Destination With Regular Tire
Maintenance
(NewsUSA) - When the rubber meets the
road this summer, will you be prepared?
Summer heat can be tough on tires,
which makes regular tire checks a critical
part of your general vehicle maintenance
schedule. Heat combined with improper
tire pressure, uneven wear or damage
and poor alignment can cause potentially
dangerous driving conditions and put a
damper on your summer road trip plans.
“Unfortunately, 83 percent of motorists
aren’t aware of how under- or over-
inflated tires affect a vehicle’s steering and
breaking control as well as fuel economy,”
explained Mark Ballard of Discount Tire,
the world’s largest tire and wheel retailer.
“In addition, regularly checking your tires
for uneven or worn tread and bald spots,
as well as replacing all four tires instead
of one or two at a time, will help avoid
hazards like blowouts and keep you on
track to your destination.”
According to the Rubber Manufacturers’
Association (RMA), more than 23,000 tow-
away crashes were due to flat tires.
Here are the top five tips to ensure proper
tire safety:
1. Get Pressure Right. In its 2011 Tire
Care Awareness Survey, the RMA found
that 62 percent of drivers don’t know
where to find the correct inflation pressure
for their vehicle. The specific inflation
pressure number can be found on the
vehicle placard located on the driver’s
side doorpost, glove box door or fuel door
or in the owner’s manual. For accurate
pressure, check tires when cool, and don’t
forget the spare. A properly inflated tire will
save you nine cents per gallon at the gas
pump and improve vehicle fuel efficiency
by 3.3 percent.
2. Don’t Overload Vehicle. Overloading
decreases fuel economy due to increased
wind drag and cargo weight. Handling,
control and braking are also negatively
impacted.
3. Rotate Before You Go. Regular rotation
helps achieve uniform tire wear and
improve road performance. Tires rotated
every 6,000 -- 8,000 miles prolong the
life of the tire and help maximize your tire
investment. It makes sense to get a tire
inspection when you rotate.
4. Straighten Up. Proper tire alignment
provides safe, predictable vehicle
control as well as a ride that is smooth,
comfortable and free of pulling or vibration.
Proper alignment helps tires wear evenly
and last longer.
5. Bald Isn’t Beautiful. The RMA survey
also found that 52 percent of drivers do not
know how to tell if their tires are bald. Lack
of tread affects the tire’s ability to grip wet
roads. Make sure tires don’t have uneven
wear, high or low areas or unusually
smooth areas that can increase the risk of
road accidents.

Integrated Pest Management:
Pest Control Made Easy

are no small problem. The National Pest
Management Association (NPMA) warns
families that cockroaches are a leading
trigger of allergies and asthma attacks. The
pests’ saliva, droppings and decomposing
bodies contain allergen proteins known
to trigger allergies and increase the
severity of asthma symptoms, especially in
children. Small rodents can chew through
electrical wiring, increasing the potential
risk of fire. And ants, which are not only
unsightly, can contaminate food.
One of the best ways homeowners and
pest professionals can work together to
prevent and control pest infestations is to
employ a method called Integrated Pest
Management, also referred to as IPM.
IPM is a process involving common
sense and sound solutions for controlling
pests. The focus is upon finding the best
strategy for a pest problem, and not merely
the simplest. Pest professionals never
employ a “one-size-fits-all” method in IPM
but rather utilize a three-part practice:
inspection, identification and treatment by
a pest professional. Treatment options in
IPM can vary from proactive measures
like sealing cracks and removing food and
water sources to reactive measures, such
as utilizing pest products, when necessary.
The “integrated” in Integrated Pest
Management does not merely describe
the three-part practice of inspection,
identification and treatment. It reflects the
joint commitment between homeowners
and pest professionals to stop pests
before they invade. The two parties work
together to identify the causes and risks
of invasions and to devise treatments for
when they do.
When it comes to IPM, prevention
can be as important to pest control as
treatment. It’s important to find a qualified
professional that can identify and point
out a home’s vulnerabilities and offer
prevention tips for homeowners. Here are
a few pest prevention techniques in an IPM
program:
* Repair any leaky pipes, especially in
areas under sinks where pests can often
go unnoticed.
* Seal up cracks and holes around pipes
and wiring.
* Keep all foods in sealed containers,
including pet food.
* Keep tree branches and other plants
cut back from the house.
* Eliminate sources of moisture or
standing water.
* Wipe counters, floors and other
surfaces frequently.
* Store garbage in sealed containers and
dispose of it regularly.
* Vacuum often.

Seeking Solutions for Plastic
Medical Waste
(NewsUSA) - Recycling efforts tend to
center around plastic water bottles and
milk jugs, but few people think about the
plastics used in hospitals. IV bags, tubing
and other types of medical products all
contain plastic. And every time a patient
enters a medical facility anywhere in the
world, they generate waste.
The medical waste produced by hospitals,
laboratories, research centers, animal
testing laboratories, mortuaries and
nursing homes can pile up quickly.
According to the World Health Organization
(WHO), high-income countries, such as the
U.S., produce about 13 pounds of medical
waste per person per year.
Medical facilities use several methods to
dispose of plastic medical waste. Some
use incineration, which releases toxins into
the atmosphere. Others use autoclaving, or
a pressurized steam-cleaning, to disinfect
plastics before shredding them. But most
medical waste ends up in landfills.
One company, JBI, Inc., has found a
better solution -- recycling plastic medical
waste into fuel. Its CEO, John Bordynuik,
was going through old research archives
when he found information about a unique
catalyst that can efficiently break down
plastic molecules into an oil similar to
biofuel.
This technology, now called Plastic 2 Oil
(P2O), can extract about one liter of fuel
from every kilogram of raw plastics.
JBI Inc., which trades on the OTC under
the stock symbol JBII, is buying a U.S.
air filtration and custom air ventilation
company that has worked with the
U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, as well
as numerous federal agencies and
organizations within the health care
industry. This new acquisition will allow
JBI, Inc. to recycle medical waste plastic
through its P2O process.
The company is looking for facilities that
can be converted into P2O factories.
Those who allow P2O factories to run on
their property will receive extra fuel from
the P2O process.

Cyberbullying and Your Teen
(NewsUSA) - According to the National
Council of Juvenile Court Judges, each
year nearly 3.2 million students are victims
of online bullying, a serious Internet safety
concern. To address these issues, Boys &
Girls Clubs of America has partnered with
Sprint to promote online safety resources
for teens and parents.
Sprint’s 4NetSafety program aims to
open the lines of communication about
Internet safety between young people and
the adults who care for them. The online
resource offers free tools from experts
that address the perils that young people
commonly encounter online and encourage
positive dialogue about Internet safety.

partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of
America,” said Debby Ballard, Sprint’s
director of community affairs. “Internet
safety is an area that is very important to
Sprint, as evidenced by our 4NetSafety
program, and our partnership with BGCA
allows us to add to and raise additional
awareness about these valuable
resources.”
A recent survey of young people revealed
some startling statistics about how parents
are supervising their children’s online time.
More than 53 percent say their parents
never ask them about whom they are
talking to on the Internet, and over half say
their parents never surf the Internet with
them.
“The Internet can be a wonderful resource,
but it has always been our goal to teach
our youth how to navigate the Web safely
and appropriately,” said Dan Rauzi,
senior director of technology services and
programs at BGCA. “Sprint and BGCA
teamed up to raise awareness about a
prime concern of ours -- the importance of
a healthy and safe virtual life for America’s
youth.”

keep their teens safer online.
1. Remind your teen that what they post
stays online forever.
2. Ask to see their profile page.
3. Tell your chid to only add friends they
know in real life.

whereabouts on a site or page.
6. If your or someone else’s child is
harassed or bullied online, report it to your
local law-enforcement agency or call the
