The four areas of groups that can be improved upon the
participation in sport activities that I am going to explain are:

Disability

Age

Gender

Culture/facilities/environment

Disability

In the area of disability that has a lack of participation in

physical activity some methods that can increase participation
would be a development of aid to assist their specific ability,
and making the people that have difficulty in physical activities
find it easier to participate.

These people with such disabilities should have developments

into the fact that there is segregation within the sporting
environment. Some of which that are helping develop activity
in disabled people would be groups and national organisations
such as sport focus, Scottish disability sport, disability sport
Wales, English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) and the
Federation of Disability Sports Organisations (FDSO) of which
all work on developing sport for disabled people in Britain, and
governing and co-coordinating body of all sports for people of
all ages and abilities with a physical, sensory or learning

people of all ages and abilities with a physical, sensory or
learning disability.

And of all have seven main objectives were:

1. To raise the profile of disability in sport – introduce new

activities and games, encourage more people to
participate, introduce more media coverage and role-
models.

2. To ensure that plans for sport included people with

disabilities – new developments of facilities need to meet
the demands of people with all abilities

3. To provide sporting opportunities for people with

disabilities – making people with all abilities equal and
create and give the same opportunities to all

4. To improve access to sport – there needs to be

development of all facilities to meet the demands of all
abilities such as ramps, specialised changing rooms ect

5. To encourage people with disabilities in international

sports – scouting of disabled people and development to
participate in national and international sporting events
such as the Paralympics

6. To ensure the best use of resources and increase finance –

resources such as specialist equipment and coaches need
to be easier accessible, and at an affordable cost

7. To make sure that the sporting needs of people with

disabilities are met – to be done by keeping to the above
listed objectives and any other needs that occur.

Participation with disabled people can be changed in different

ways in such as physical, mental or socially towards them. An
example of this could be physically the person may not be able
to meet the demands of the activity which need to make to
meet the demands of by devising rules and activities suitable
for all disabilities. A social aspect that could be improved upon
would be to involve people with disabilities and make them feel

3 | Page Josh

not different and encourage to meet new people and feel the
same as their peers. An example of a mental factor that could
improve participation in sport could be making people with
disabilities feel not so useless and different but make them feel
normal and having the activities fun and easy to enjoy.

Age

The area age segregation in participation sport that need to be

improved upon are regarded as young people’s sports and
some are regarded as old people’s sports, which should be
created no age restriction and introduce to all at different levels
such as sports age isn't a disadvantage. Sports which do not
require strength, flexibility or endurance capacity can be
competed in by both young and old. Sports which require
accuracy or concentration, such as bowls and darts.

Governing bodies need to work on activities where age does

not affect participation such as swimming, walking and playing
golf. And make them more available to all ages, and meet the
demands of all such as accessible to all be introducing such as
parking, transport and ramps est. There have been some
improvements such as free swimming in school holidays that is
a huge benefit to children. And development no national parks
and public walk paths which is free and accessible to all.

Gender

Gender segregation is a huge problem that needs to be fixed if

there wants to be a greater participation in sport because from
the previous group of age, that also is a problem for women as
well as the fact that men are dominant in the sporting world.

Some key factors of that need to be improved upon to improve

participation in sport are:

• Women should have the freedom in choosing what their

chosen sport to participate in rugby and football teams are
improving in participation in women
• Women should be allowed to compete with or against their
male athletes if they feel comfortable and confident to.
• Women's sports needs to have a higher profile in
the media. coverage of female sports needs to be
immproved, this has seen an improvement as the women
rugby and football are televised but still not popular
enough.
• Women's competitions should have the same equal prize
money as men's.
• There should be more female sporting role models, which
will benefit if there is a higher media attention

Women's Sports Foundation was set up. This organisation aims

to increase the awareness of issues in women's sports and
increase participation and opportunities for women at all levels.
Bute there still is nowhere near the same equality in sport that

men have. This needs to be made more equal and fair to
increase the participation in a huge area of people.

Culture/facilities/environment
The disadvantages of culture, facilities and the environment
need to be improved upon. UK sport is a big example of an
improvement on these areas, an example of this would be UK
Sport has developed Mission 2012, is a project designed to keep eyes
firmly focused on every element of the performance system, help sports
to identify the issues and challenges they face in hitting their respective
performance ambitions and find ways of dealing with them quickly and
effectively. These are them followed down in to local or national sporting
bodies such as sport Wales and England which then fund money into
these areas. An example of this would be development and
maintenance of public playing fields and parks, an building the new LC2
and the welsh national pool which makes new opportunities and adds
facilities to areas which didn’t have any.

in certain cultures children are leaded towards certain sports

such as Britain is typically forwarded towards rugby and
football whereas other countries such as India are towards
cricket, this has changed over the years and for example the
sports council of Wales have introduce 5x60 and dragon sports

into schools that increase participation in other sports that are
out of the school’s curriculum. This helps children because
these sports are free of charge to participate in which is
sometimes a barrier that affects children and families is
participating in sport. This prevents that depending on the
environment you live in and the economic state you are in.
