The
S.M.I.
Tunnel
consisted
of
repairing
of

an
84"
by
11,000’
+
sewer
tunnel
with
T‐
Loc
Lining.

There
were
several
areas
in

need
of
structural
repair
and
ground

support.

These
areas
required

retimbering,
replacing
decaying
rotten

lagging
between
4'
steel
sets
and
replacing

rebar
and
concrete.

Chemical
grout
was

used
to
control
ground
water
and
running

sand
so
repairs
could
be
completed.
This

project
was
from
2001to
2002.

the
excavation

The
Polar
Star
mine
Tunnel
is
an

abandoned
placer
gold
mine,
which

contains
a
sluice
box
its
entire
length
of

700
feet.

In
the
year
2000,
this
project

was
an
environmental
clean
up
of

mercury
to
protect
the
lake
receiving

the
run
off
below.

The
sluice
box
and

mercury
was
removed
as
well
as
all

contaminated
rocks
and
debris.

The
Sunol
Water
Temple
was
built
in
1910.
It
is
where
all
the
waters
of
six
hundred
square
miles
of

water
shed
meet
and
mingle.

The
water
at
this
point
drop
40
feet
into
a
conduit
before
their
long

journey
to
San
Francisco.

The
restoration
of
the
tunnel
begins
in
1998.





In
1999
The
Sunol
Water
Temple
filter

gallery
was
retimbered
for
ground
support

as
prep
work
for
the
installation
of
steel

pipe
inside
the
tunnel.

tunnel
for
inspections
and
proper
drain.

The
scope
of
work
was
to
remine

caved
ground
and
install
steel
sets
with
wood
lagging
for
ground
support
and
control.

pulled
through
the
52"
pipe
with
a
T.RS.
pulling
machine.

Chemical
grout
was

used
to
stop
water
in
the
shafts.

Highway
Drain
Tunnel
Project
in
the
year
of
1996
consisted
of
excavating
an
8'
by
8'

by
120'
water
drain
tunnel
under
the
Kahekili
Highway
on
the
island
of
Oahu.

The
excavation

method
was
using
hand
spaders.

Liner
plate
was
used
for
ground
support.
Concrete
was
placed

around
the
liner
plate.

This
project
was
completed
in
6
weeks
and
at
a
cost
less
than
the
set
up
of

an
open
cut
method.

The
Cuesta
Tunnel
in
the
year
1994
was
an
existing
7'
by
9'
by
5,300'
water
tunnel.

The
scope
of

work
was
to
place
a
24"
pipe
and
a
42"
pipe
inside
the
tunnel.

This
was
accomplished
by
welding

together
42"
by
20'
sections
of
pipe
and
floating
welded
sections
into
the
tunnel.

The
welded
steel

concrete
lined
pipe
was
floated
5,300'
to
the
down
stream
bulkhead.

The
water
was
released
and

the
5,300'
pipe
was
incased
with
concrete.

Replacing
watertight
bulkheads
the
process
was

repeated,
floating
a
24"
welded
steel
concrete
lined
pipe
down
stream
5,300'
to
the
bulkhead.

The

water
was
then
released
and
the
24"
pipe
and
placed
in
saddles
on
100'
centers.


For
the
project
Beck’s
Enterprises
appointed

Consultant
and
Concrete
