wan ainer auff dich wil … => the other one is eager to attack
So stel dich also … => direct him in his eagerness and invite him by position yourself
setz den linken fues vor … => do not stand around, move forward, so that he can reach you.
Measure triggers everything, he won’t take the invitation if he can’t reach you
und halt dein messer … => lower your weapon, so the head is free as the invitation, but keep the
messer ready under tension.
und wan er dir oben zu … hawt => he took the bait, his banzai attack roles on
so tritt zu im … => get near, very near
mit der schlechten versatzung => and another bait following the first one, a simple umbrella block
stopping the blow dead on your strong. You can almost hear him thinking “we are near, both are
stopped entirely in a strong binding… what did Liechtenauer say? The right hand is the enemy of
the left? Ergo, it’s grappling time.” (See IX „Ain messer nemen")
und spring mit dem rechten fueß … => he can forget grapping your messer hand, you are way off
at his side ready for the finishing move
If you read these pieces of messer play, always keep in mind that they present the answer to the
most likely response to your action one sentence before. Your opponent is not dumb, he will react
as a fighter with the intention to kill you.
The pieces
I) Merck ettliche stuck in dem messer
So if someone wants to hit or stab you, so position yourself. Put your left foot forward and hold
your Messer with your hand near your right hip. As soon as he tries to get your head with a hew,
step to him with the simple displacement, where the long edge is above. And jump with your right
foot to him at his left side and hit him to the head or anyplace where you can reach him, he is at
your mercy.
=> Stand normally, step left forward and lower your messer to your hip. The point is at your left
side, the hand on your right side as you would do planning an hew from below and forgot to move
first the hand than the feet. If he takes the presents and hits you to your head, raise your messer
powerfull to catch the blow at your strong, let the messer clash at the cutting edge. Do not wait a
moment but jump to his left side and hit him.
=> Start in the same movement than in the first one. But this time do not step with your left to get
near but cross with your right foot. You can displace with the point on your left or on your right
side, in this piece you do it exactly like in the first one. The displacement with the point to your
right side is covered in the next one. It really does not matter so much. The pieces are about
learning a better footwork than in the first one. You are faster if you displace him keeping the
point to the left, but you are stronger and safer if you do it otherwise like in the next piece.
By defending that way or the other and doing a crossstep (do not cross to far, be modestly), your
body will get twisted. This tension can be released by completing the triangle and moving the left
foot forward with a right turn of the body. There are two ways to support that turning, first one is
described here, the second one is twisting the right foot clockwise in advance like Talhoffer and
Lecküchner does or as you can see in old dances. If you jump now you will get behind his point
and by that out of his reach at his side.
=> This is exactly the same like number II. What you learn here is the “verkerte Hand” the
reversed hand where the palm opens upwards. The reversed hand is over your left shoulder and
the point is over your right shoulder or farther outside. Usually “schießen” with a weapon means a
fast thrust with the point, but in this case the point is uselessly pointing to the earth. It would take
too much time to raise it. So you shoot your strong upwards to meet his blow while the point
drops to your right side by turning your hand to the “verkehrte Hand”. The blow is met and
stopped. At this time you can choose to jump as recommended or use the second option, which
is mentioned by a “stand nach Wunsch”. In this moment you got a safe stand, where you can
“fühlen” or start grappling, do as it pleases you.
stich /
But a stand
So as one fences long from below to you, so stand with your left foot forward, and lift your messer
above the leg in the changeover. As soon as he fences to you, raise up high your messer until the
handle is over you and the point points downwards, and displace that way (and this displacement
is called Zoll (measure of length) displacement) and jump outside of his left side in the triangle
and hit or stab.
V) Das haist ain not standt
hals vnd wirff in /
A piece for escaping, and this is a emergency stand, when you cannot move back or
forward.
So mark as someone stabs or hits at you, so take your messer in the middle-hew and that your
right foot stands forward. And as soon as he himself at you… so hew from your side from the roof
simply above off, and jump him out of the way at his right side in the triangle and hit him at his
right arm.
