STORY OF SUCCESS

This story revolves around a boy who was physically frail and
afraid of being beaten by others in case of a street fight or
any untoward incident in his early youth and the thought of
making himself strong never left his mind. He learnt that
through the art of Ju-Jitsu, a person of a slight build could
throw or subdue a larger and more powerful opponent. Since
he was quite slim in the year 1977. All of his friends were
strong by built, although he was quite active in sports,
inclusive of hockey and football, but the desire of
becoming strong captured his mind and he chose to be a
pugilist. As a matter of fact, he wanted to follow the footprint
of his ideal Muhammad Ali Kellay. Those wore the sturdy
days in his life as he had to get up early morning prior to the
fajr prayer and had to join the team to sprint runners in the
ground of Forman Christian College, and after about a 3
miles running distance, half an hour jumping and skipping
over ropes was the daily routine. The young boy started
feeling changes in his body as it grew stronger day by day.
The instructor gradually put him on the sparing rounds, but
how horrible it was, as on the first day of sparing, to his bad
luck, his partner was selected by the instructor, a national
champion in bantam weight category. The world was dark
for him when a powerful punch hit on his temple. Several
minutes gone by, maybe hours, his mind became empty. No
feelings at all, no pain, no thoughts. The only memory
available then was the face of the instructor, and his
question, “Are you OK?” The boy answered, “Yes” and tried
to get up from the ground where he found himself lying, but
was unable to do so and fell down again. The instructor
declared, “Fight is over”. But suddenly, the young boy felt
some strange changes in his body. Yes. Surprisingly, he was
not frightened. There was no feeling of being beaten. This
was a real difference. The whole day passed having the
same feeling and by the rise of the next sun, the boy was a
total new personality. After routine warming up exercises, he
approached the instructor and requested to allow him to
fight the national champion. The instructor looked at him
with surprise but allowed. Both young players took their
stances and waited for the instructor’s whistle. The fight
started, the champion attempts left, right then right, again,
left, left and right, but amazingly none of his strikes got
target. The young boy actively managed the dodging
techniques which he learnt from his instructor. All others
became attentive and started looking at this fight. Suddenly
a miracle took place; the champion was down on the ground
lying unconscious. What happened, no one could have
judged, except the instructor, who saw the left hook shot
coming out from the young boy and changed the scenes. All
congratulated him, and the young boy turned out to be an
unbendable person, something he wanted to be. This was a
new start of his life. He increased his 3 hours training session
into a 6 hours one; 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening.

After a couple of months training, he was declared as one of

the best pugilist of the club. These were the days when the
matriculation examinations were approaching near. But, the
friends decided to go together to watch a movie in the
cinema namely “one armed boxer”. The young boy was
fully sweating in spite of an air-conditioned hall, and was
very much impressed y the techniques in the movie. The
very next day, he started looking for a martial arts club in
town. He was guided by a neighbor about the location of a
karate club near his vicinity. This young boy joined that club
without any hesitation. The type of exercises in the club
made him physically fit. His interest grew and he became
more passionate about learning Martial Arts- Karate. In
1978, his journey in the field of Martial Arts started, and he
won many medals and trophies out of different competitions
from the club level to national competitions. His inquisitive
nature got him involved learning Judo (another branch of
Martial Arts). But this one was governed with some rules as
being an Olympic sport. The young boy who got matured by
mind but was the same light weight person, he added many
more trophies and medals by winning national
championships in Judo. The early span of his Martial Arts
learning was a little bloody as his sensei (teacher) used to
beat him brutally and every time when he used to come
home, having some injuries, he had to listen to spade and
spade from his loving mother. But, surprisingly, no fear in
mind and passion to learn Martial Arts became more and
more by the passage of time.

It was one of the luckiest days of his life, when this young
man was declared the national Judo champion in his
weight category and his competition was aired live on PTV-
His fight was witnessed by his Father along with other family
members. He was warmly welcomed at home by all family
members and was congratulated by his father .Taking
advantage of the occasion, this young man demanded
permission from his father for going to Japan for Martial Arts
Training. His Father was fair and kind enough for permitting
him subject to completion of his studies. Those were the
days when he was doing his graduation. The journey
continued for learning Martial Arts and fighting in
competitions, when the final paper of his L.L.B
examination was over, he approached his father and
reminded him of his promise. ALLAH ALMIGHTY fulfilled his
dream he was permitted by his father to go to Japan. The
next day, he was sitting in a plane and landed at the Tokyo
airport around midnight. No knowledge of the Japanese
language except the basic terminologies of Martial Arts and
a few sentences, he tried to learn the book he had
purchased from the Urdu Bazaar. By midnight, he was
standing outside the airport, thinking of how to reach
“Kodokan” a place to be termed as Mecca for Martial Artists
in the world. He tried to ask many people for the address,
but every body nudged their heads without saying a single
word. He realized that perhaps English was not a universal
language for Japan.

Few hours gone by, the airport looked deserted as all the
passengers were almost gone, and then appeared an angel,
a Japanese doctor coming from Australia. He had a broken
accent in English, but communication got practically
possible. He guided the route to this young man, But
surprisingly all signboards were in the Japanese language
and cabbies and buses were not able to understand English.
The angel decided to go along and the ride in the last
accessible bus in Tokyo started. On the arrival in Shinjiku,
the angel guided him to get a taxicab and to go to Korakuea.
Again the communication barrier became a hurdle in the way
to explain the destination to the cabby. As they say, God is
so gracious, the angel who was supposed to go to Osaka – a
city far away from Tokyo, decided to go along until Kodokan.
The taxicab dropped at the gate of Kodokan hostel at 3 am
in the early days of 1988. But to his surprise, the guard did
not open the gate despite of the angel explaining him all in
his language that a student has arrived from Pakistan. But,
the answer was simple, “I have no instructions, so come
tomorrow and see the relevant people in the International
Division of Kodokan”. Left with no options, both of them
decided to go to a nearby hotel and book two rooms for a
night. But sleep was impossible, perhaps because of a tiring
journey or a different environment of the foreign country.
The student who was crazy about Martial Arts remained on
bed without sleep until; his door was knocked upon by the
Angel at about 10.A.M.
The Angel guided him to the International Division of
Kodokan, and explained the location in their language.

A surge of relief greeted the young Pakistani, when Mr.

Kimura of Kodokan International Division spoke English and
welcomed him. He also promised to convey the message of
his arrival to his old Japanese teacher, Mr. Michio Fukoshima
who instigated him to travel to Japan. Shihan (a teacher
having a position of 6 Dan or above) Fukoshima was serving
the Tokyo police at Kescho-Budo. Mr.Kimura informed the
boy of Shihan’s arrival at 4.P.M. and instructed him to
remain in the room while delivering keys of a room in
Kodokan’s hostel. This was a new world, a multi-storey
building duly built for the training of Judo by the founder of
Judo Martial Arts, Dr. Jigoro Kano. Dr. Jigoro was a student of
Ju-Jitsu Martial Art (Mother Art of all Martial Arts) and took
the throwing part by modifying techniques, created a new
art as Judo which was accepted by IOC as a sport after 1962
Olympics in Japan. The day was unforgettable, as it passed
so quickly and at 4.P.M. Shihan Fukoshima knocked the door
of room No. 13. Both Teacher and student greeted each
other warmly, but with an international language of signs.
Shihan was unable to speak English and the young boy
Japanese. Shihan managed to explain to go out for dinner,
not a single word was understood by both as one was
speaking Japanese and the other English. But a many hours
discussion and a delicious dinner in the most expensive
restaurant of Roppaugi (the most expensive area of Tokyo
city) is unforgettable. The warm welcome and
encouragement of Shihan Fukoshima turned the life of the
young Pakistani as he made him a permanent student of
Martial Arts. The hard work paid so quickly, that after a 3
months period, there remained no barrier of languages
between the student and the Teachers. A quick learning of
Japanese, patronizing of Shihan Fukoshima, made this
young Pakistani a famous Judo-ka in the Kodokan. The
continuous stay in the Kodokan hostel made it possible to
make many friends from all over the world.

The journey of learning Martial Arts continued till early 1990,

when the young Martial Artist decided to visit his family back
in Pakistan. He was greeted by all his friends but some
people were jealous too. Since the father of this man was
ailing, he decided to live in Pakistan and served his father as
well as the nation instead of going back to his dreamland
where all luxuries of life were waiting for him.

His expertise was used by the then sports organizers in the

Punjab Olympics, and he was elected as the General
Secretary of Punjab Judo Association. A day and night
mission came into his life and education and propagation of
Judo Martial Art was the only objective remaining in his life.
Friends and relatives advised him to pay attention to his
professional life as a lawyer, but vocation was set aside by
this young organizer and real education through seminars,
coaching camps, even into the National Coaching Camp held
at the National Training and Coaching Center-Karachi prior to
the National Games of Pakistan 1990.

The people of Pakistan were confused by some elements

having vested interest with the name of Judo-Karate and no
one, not even elites and educated people including
journalists were unable to distinguish between Karate and
Judo Martial Arts. A series of articles in newspapers and
Coaching clinics made it possible for the general masses to
get to know the difference between the two Martial Arts,
where these untiring efforts were getting this man popular
amongst the sport organizers; it was causing unrest and
hidden enmity to the people having vested interest in Martial
Arts world in Pakistan.

The efforts were recognized and the young man was elected
as General Secretary of the Pakistan Judo Federation.
This elevation on the other hand boosted up the
commitment of this young man, but on the other hand,
created great strife amongst people of the anti-group. A
series of conspiracies started even at the highest level, but
the hard work, commitment, dedication bestowed by this
young personality took Pakistan’s image very high in the
sports circle of Martial Arts. It was for the first time in the
history of this country that the National team of Pakistan
participated in the Asian Championship at Osaka-Japan. The
lack of proper training facilities, infrastructure and training
mats (tatami) never stopped his way to progress. But dirty
sports politics, conspiracies of anti-groups worked and
stopped him in 1992.

Frustrating from sports politics, he again decided to leave

Pakistan and went to Japan. 1992-1994, the whole period
was full of joys and learning for the young man who acquired
knowledge and decrees in Original Martial Arts: Ju-Jitsu
during his stay in Japan. He was again chosen as the
President of Pakistan Judo Federation (PJF) in
December 1994 after the tragic demise of President PJF,
Mr. Tanweer Hameed, D.I.G police. Again, the level of Judo
was raised by the hard work and dedication shown by this
young man, but this was not acceptable by the anti-group
who created great hurdles in the way of the original body.
But, unfortunately, a parallel body with people who
destroyed the sports and sportsmen in the country having a
vested agenda were affiliated by the top organization of
sports, without giving a fair chance of contest. Left with no
other choice but to concentrate into Ju-Jitsu, International Ju-
Jitsu Federation’s Vice President, Mr. Luis Baguena, who
happened to be the president of the International
Judo Federation during the past made this man their
member and Pakistan Ju-Jitsu Federation which was
formed in December 1996, got affiliated with Ju-Jitsu
International Federation (JJIF) in its General Council
meeting held at Horgen-Switzerland. Pakistan got the
distinction to become the first member of JJIF as a full
member in Asia. All other countries, including Japan, joined
JJIF after Pakistan. PJJF has the distinction of having the 1st
Continental Referees in Asia for Ju-Jitsu sports duly qualified
by JJIF

A series of activities, inclusive of National Championship,

participation of JJIF summer training camp, and world
championship were made possible by PJJF. The popularity of
Ju-Jitsu can be assessed by the inclusion of this into
Pakistan Army training by MT.GHQ. Unarmed combat
was taught to the officers and sepoys of Pakistan. Army,
badges of air guards, ASF officers were trained by none
other than the same young man, Mr. Khalil Ahmed Khan,
President of PJJF. He has a distinction and honour to
train the Singapore Army and police as well. He was
awarded official insignia of an instructor by the Singapore
Army, who started learning Ju-Jitsu Martial Arts and
discarded the training of tae-Kwan do (Korean Martial Arts)
as they were learning the same thing for 30 years.

The services of Mr. Khalil have been acknowledged by the

JJIF, and in September 2005, he was elected as the
president of Asian Ju-Jitsu Union (AJJU) and
subsequently, as President of Asian Ju-Jitsu & Belt-
Wrestling Federation (AJJBWF) by merging two similar
sports. He was given another impossible mission; to get
these two sports recognized by the Olympic Council of Asia.
Although at world level, these sports are yet to become a
member of the IOC.

The untiring efforts and personal coaching of Mr. Khalil

enabled our young male and female students to clinch the
title of 1st Asian Champion by winning 06 Gold, 01
Silver and 05 Bronze during the 1st Asian
Championship at Almaty-Kazakhstan. This meritorious
achievement wouldn’t have been possible, if Mr. Khalil had
not sponsored the national team from his own pocket,
without having a simple penny from the Government or any
private sector.

ALLAH ALMIGHTY has rewarded this son of soil by having

another great achievement of getting these two sports
recognized by the Olympics Council of Asia (OCA). Ju-Jitsu
becomes part of Asian Martial Arts Games, and Belt
wrestling was being introduced as demonstration
Sports in the 3rd Indoor Asian Games 2009 by OCA.
These two sports will be permanent sports in the next Asian
Indoor martial Arts games under the décor of Olympic
Council of Asia.
The sport of Ju-Jitsu has been introduced in Pakistan at grass
root level, with the patronization of the Ministry of Education,
Punjab. Young boys and girls are being trained by PJJF and it
affiliates to bring laurel for the country. Pakistan was blessed
by being chosen as the host of 2nd Asian Ju-Jitsu Belt
Wrestling Championship to be held from November10-
2, 2007 in Lahore, Pakistan. However, due to security
concern the event was shifted to Bishkek Kyrgyzstan.
Where Pakistan retained its title of Asian Championship in
Duo system and fetches 11 medals for the country.
This out- standing performance was repeated by Pakistani
young player under the leadership of President PJJF and got
18 medals be winning gold again for 3rd Asian
Championship at Uzbekistan in 2009.

Pakistan was chosen as the host country for the 9th World
belt Wrestling Championship and 4th Asian
Championship in the year 2011.
PJJF has nominated the organizing committee headed by the
Prime Minister of Pakistan to host these mega events in
Pakistan.
The organizers are dedicated to uplift the soft image of our
country and are committed to organize the 5th World Sports
Green festival, which includes among others, a training camp
between war-conflicted countries as a peace project and for
the purpose the slogan is set to be “Play for Peace” and the
logo for the gala also represents the symbol of peace that is
a DOVE. More than 1600 athletes are coming to Pakistan to
attend this mega event, which surely can be termed as a
mini Olympics event because of its festivities prior to and on
event projects. Organization of Continental Referee Course
and Examination in Pakistan again during this festival will
surely benefit the masses of Pakistan and as many as
possible people can participate at such a big event at their
door step. All the credit goes to Mr. Khalil Ahmed Khan, who
has been elected as General Secretary of International Belt
Wrestling Association (IBWA) and another World Governing
body of traditional wrestling .i.e. International Association of
traditional Wrestling Sports (IATWS) a partner organization of
UNESCO VICE PRESIDENT WORLD ASSOCIATION OF AFRICAN STYLE WRESTLING &
SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT WORLD MARTIAL ARTS FESTIVAL FEDERATION (WMAFF).

Undoubtedly, the son of soil has brought a great name in the

International Sports Circle for Pakistan and has been elected
as Secretary General of TSG committee of UNESCO,
which is really a credit to the country. The story of success
does not stop here, but goes ahead as the Pakistan will be
playing great role in promoting these martial Arts under the
leadership of Mr. Khan. Laying a foundation and starting
from scratch isn’t reward less and the whole world will
acknowledge his ability and leadership during this occasion.
PJJF has been formally recognized by the Pakistan Olympic
Association as well as Ministry of Sports-Pakistan through
Pakistan Sports board (PSB) and all credit for this
achievement goes to none other than Mr. Khan President
PJJF.
