Methanol
oil
NaOH
Go see granny for the weekend
BREAKING
DOWN
THE
STEPS:
Step
1:
Remove
moisture
and
food
particles
from
your
oil
via
heat
(120
–
125F)
and
filtering.
Settle
the
oil
for
a
few
hours,
ideally
the
day
before.
• Look
for
clear
oil
• Drain
approx.
2
–
3
gallons
of
oil
that
have
settled
to
the
bottom
of
the
processor
Step
2:
Test
your
oil
for
acidity
levels
(See
your
friendly
titration
guide)
Step
3:
Ready
your
raw
material
and
add
to
the
processor
(oil
is
added
first)
• 1
litre
of
oil
• 200
ml
of
methanol
• X
grams
of
NaOH
(Lye)
(remember
this
is
to
be
dissolved
in
your
methanol
after
your
titration)
• Give
yourself
a
few
hours
to
allow
complete
dissolution
on
the
NaOH
in
the
methanol.
• Multiply
these
base
figures
to
the
total
quantity
of
vegetable
oil
you
will
be
using.
Step
4:
Circulate
the
oil
in
your
processor
via
pump
Step
5:
Feed
the
methoxide
via
pump
slowly
into
the
processor
• Watch
for
gradual
changes
in
oil
viscosity,
becoming
less
thick
over
time
• You
can
adjust
temperature
changes
in
the
processor
here.
(131
F
max)
Step
6:
With
methoxide
completely
added,
mix
all
the
contents
in
the
processor
for
approx.
3
hours.
• Do
sample
testing
aka
9:1
test
Step
7:
Shut
down
processor
after
3
hrs
and
allow
settle
time
of
10
–
12
hours
Step
8:
Drain
the
glycerin
phase
and
store
separately
Step
9:
Move
crude
bio
diesel
to
the
wash
tank
Step
10:
Add
the
water
to
the
crude
glycerin
biodiesel
slowly
and
begin
bubble
wash
technique
(12
hr
minimum)
Step
11:
Drain
water
and
begin
2nd
wash
• Look
for
clear
water
phase
(test
the
pH
of
the
water
pH8.5
–
7)
• Look
for
clear
bio
diesel
phase
Step
12:
Check
bio
diesel
with
a
shake
test.
• Look
for
any
thick
middle
phase
or
emulsion)
Step
13:
Dry
bio
diesel
via
heat
and
put
into
your
tank
• Look
for
clear
biodiesel
