Axcient Data Protection Solution

NOTE
See Chapter 1, “Overview,” in the Axcient UMC User Guide for a more complete
description of the Axcient data protection solution.

Axcient provides a comprehensive data protection solution targeted specifically at

SMBs that combines the benefits of an internal data center with the protection of an
offsite data center. (This is sometimes referred to as a hybrid cloud solution.) The
Axcient solution is scalable, flexible, and easy to administer, supporting both onsite and
offsite backup and recovery. The Axcient solution is provided as a
software-as-a-service (SaaS) offering, so Axcient maintains the data protection
software, appliances, and infrastructure.

Axcient RMC User Guide 13

Chapter 1: RMC Overview

Architecture
The Axcient solution is a two-tiered data storage and retrieval strategy that includes the
following:
1. Axcient appliance. Data from designated devices is stored onsite in this appliance.
2. Axcient data center. The Axcient appliance connects to an Axcient data center. The
Axcient appliance sends the encrypted data to the Axcient data center for redundant
offsite storage and protection.

The Axcient appliance sits inside the corporate firewall. After you specify what data to
protect and how often to backup that data, the Axcient appliance automatically copies
the data from the target devices and stores it within the appliance. To provide disaster
protection, the Axcient appliance sends the encrypted data to the Axcient data center
through the Internet for offsite storage and retrieval when needed. (All data saved offsite
is also saved onsite.)

Figure 1 illustrates the Axcient architecture.

Figure 1 Axcient Architecture

Chapter 1: RMC Overview

Administration
Axcient provides both local and remote GUI consoles to administer the Axcient
protection solution:
 Unified Management Console (UMC). The UMC manages a single Axcient
appliance. You can monitor that appliance and perform any administrative task
through the UMC. The UMC includes the following tabs:
 Dashboard—Displays status information about backup jobs (active, scheduled,
and idle), system resources, and system activity.
 Devices—Allows you to add devices to be protected, define and execute backup
jobs, restore data from a backup job, and configure servers for virtual failover
(ServerAlive) and complete reimaging (Bare Metal Restore) protection.
 Reports—Displays a set of usage, history, and scheduling reports.
 Events—Displays the event log and allows you top configure e-mail alerting for
selected events.
 Users—Allows you to add administrative users and specify their roles
(permissions).
 System—Sets system parameters including network, quality of service, date,
e-mail, SNMP, web proxy, and offsite backup settings.
 Remote Management Console (RMC). The RMC is a general console to monitor
multiple Axcient appliances. It provides access from a single console to all the
Axcient appliances for an organization. The RMC includes the following tabs:
 Dashboard—Displays status information about each Axcient appliance in the
organization. It also includes a link to the UMC for each appliance.
 Users—Allows you to add RMC users and specify their roles (permissions).
 Reports—Displays a summary statistics report across all Axcient appliances in
the organization.

NOTE
All Axcient appliances are served by a common RMC application running in the
Axcient data center, so regardless of the Axcient software version running on your
Axcient appliances, those appliances are accessing the same RMC.

Axcient RMC User Guide 15

Chapter 1: RMC Overview

Implementation
As an example, consider a case where a company has three sites, a corporate
headquarters with a variety of devices to protect (servers, workstations, and laptops), a
small data center with multiple servers, and a remote sales office with a collection of
laptop PCs. Each Axcient appliance protects the devices at its site, and a site
administrator manages the site configuration, backup, monitoring, and restore
operations through that appliance's UMC. Each Axcient appliance establishes a secure
connection to the Axcient data center and to the RMC for that company. (The RMC is an
application running in the Axcient data center.) An administrator can monitor all
company appliances (in this case three appliances) from a single RMC console. The
RMC resides outside the corporate firewall, manages registration and monitoring at the
company level, and maintains a secure connection to each UMC. Figure 2 illustrates this
example case.

NOTE
See the Axcient UMC User Guide for more information about the UMC.

Figure 2 Axcient Protection Solution Example

Chapter 1: RMC Overview

RMC Tasks
The RMC is designed as a global monitoring and access console to all the Axcient
appliances in an organization, so there are few tasks associated with the RMC. (Most of
the data protection tasks are accomplished through the UMC for each appliance.) The
following list highlights the RMC tasks:
1. Monitor the status and summary statistics of Axcient appliances in the organization.
The dashboard provides a summary view across appliances and access to the UMC
for any of those appliances (see Chapter 3, “RMC Dashboard,”and Chapter 4, “RMC
Reports”).
2. Add users who need access to the RMC. For a reseller this task is usually to add one
or more user accounts for each client (see Chapter 5, “RMC User Management”).

Chapter 3: RMC Dashboard

Figure 6 displays the RMC dashboard, and Table 2 describes the RMC dashboard fields.
 To order the entries, click on a column header (Alias, Client, Last Offsite, Result,
onsite storage used, offsite storage used), which orders the entries alphabetically,
by date, or by amount as appropriate. Click the header to toggle the order:
 A-Z or Z-A alphabetically
 newest-to-oldest or oldest-to-newest by date
 least-to-most or most-to-least by amount
 To search for lines related to a specific appliance or user, enter a search string in the
box (upper right of the screen) and then press the Search button. It displays all lines
that include that string as part of the Alias or Client fields. (It does not support
wildcard or other regular expression search strings.)
 To displays usage statistics and offsite backup history about that appliance, click the
View link in the Details column (see “RMC Appliance Detail Screen” on page 27).
 To check what issues occurred during the last offsite backup job for any yellow (job
warnings) or red (job failed) appliances, log into the UMC for that appliance (see
“RMC to UMC Connection” on page 29) and check the events log.

(In the example four appliances are green [last offsite backup successful], one is red [last
offsite backup failed], and the rest are light blue [unregistered].)

Figure 6 RMC Dashboard

Chapter 3: RMC Dashboard

If you log in as a reseller or a user who can assign clients, the additional column Assign
Client appears on the dashboard at the far right (Figure 7). To assign a client to an
appliance, do the following:
1. Click the Assign link in the Assign Client column for that appliance.
2. An Assign a Client field appears above the appliance lines. Select from the
pull-down list of users and click the save button. The selected user appears in the
Client column for that appliance.

In the RMC a reseller will see all appliances assigned to that reseller, but other users
will see only those appliances assigned to them by the reseller or by another user who
has permission to assign clients.

NOTE
The list of available clients is the list of defined users. If the desired user does not
appear in the list, that user must first be added (see “Add an RMC User” on page 36).

(The example is from a reseller RMC dashboard. [The names are blurred out.] The third
appliance Assign link was clicked to display the Assign a Client field. This appliance
does not have a client assigned currently, which means no user other than the reseller will
see that appliance in the RMC. Selecting a client from the pull-down list and clicking the
save button sets that user as the client and displays that user name in the Client column.)

RMC Reports

The RMC provides one predefined report. This chapter describes the report, and it
includes the following sections:
 View RMC Reports
 Uptiva Statistics Report

View RMC Reports

To view a report, click the reports button at the top of the RMC screen (Figure 9). The
Reports screen displays the following predefined report:
 uptiva statistics—Displays storage statistics across the Axcient appliances.

If the report spans more than a page, use the scroll bar down the right side of the reports
screen.

Uptiva Statistics Report

The Uptiva Statistics report (Figure 10) displays storage information across Axcient
appliances in the organization. Each line in the report represents a separate Axcient
appliance. Table 4 describes the report contents.

Table 4 Uptiva Statistics Report Fields

Column Description Values
Serial Number Displays the serial number of the Axcient (serial number)
appliance. This number is set at the factory.
onsite storage Displays the total space allocated for backup xx.x KB|MB|GB|TB
capacity storage on this Axcient appliance. The
appliance uses some space independent of the
saved jobs, and it includes a separate partition
where config-database information is stored
that is not included in the total. The reported
number refers to the available storage capacity,
not the total capacity of the appliance. For
example a 500-GB appliance might have only
415-GBs available for data backups.
onsite storage Displays the backup storage space used on this xx.x KB|MB|GB|TB
used Axcient appliance. The value is the combined
amounts from the following sources:
• space used to back up the current data
• space used to back up the versions, that is
the space necessary to store all previous
versions (differences from the current
version only)
• space used for the configuration database
and other system-related information
necessary to store and recover the backed
up data
onsite storage Displays the amount of space still available for xx.x KB|MB|GB|TB
available backups before capacity on this Axcient
appliance is reached.

RMC User Management

This chapter describes how to add users and define roles, and it includes the following
sections:
 Manage RMC Users
 Add an RMC User
 Modify an RMC User
 Deactivate or Delete an RMC User
 Manage RMC Roles and Permissions
 Add an RMC Role
 Modify an RMC Role
 Delete an RMC Role

Manage RMC Users

You can add or modify user accounts to provide RMC access to the appliances in your
organization.
 A reseller (or a client user with appropriate permissions) can create accounts for
clients (see “Add an RMC User” on page 36).
 The permissions for a user are determined by that user's assigned role, which can be
one of the default roles or a custom role that you define (see “Manage RMC Roles
and Permissions” on page 39).
 The Existing Users screen (Figure 12 on page 38) lists the existing RMC users for
your organization:
 To order the entries alphabetically, click on a column header (Username, User
Type, Email). Click the header to toggle the order (A-Z or Z-A).
 To search for specific users, enter a string in the box (upper right of the screen)
and then press the Search button. It displays all lines that include that string as
part of the Username or Email fields. (It does not support wildcard or other
regular expression search strings.)

selected appliances, set the role to CLIENT, which automatically checks the RMC
User permission box. To allow report viewing (in addition to the dashboard), check
the View Reports box, so both the RMC User and View Reports permissions are
checked. RMC access to a specific appliance is granted through the dashboard (see
“RMC Dashboard Screen” on page 23)

4. When all the information is correct, click the save button. A message appears
indicating the user was saved, and the new user now appears in the list of existing
users.
5. An e-mail is generated and sent to the user e-mail address that includes the account
information (name and password).

Manage RMC Roles and Permissions

The permissions for a user are determined by the role assigned to that user. Each role
provides a set of allowed permissions. The RMC comes with the following roles by
default:
 admin—Allows any RMC-related operation.
 Client—Allows access to the RMC dashboard (but only the dashboard). The
dashboard will display only information about the Axcient appliances to which this
user is granted access (see “RMC Dashboard Screen” on page 23).
 tech—Allows limited RMC-related operations.

You can create additional roles. Table 6 describes the available permissions and lists
which ones apply for each of the default roles.
