Academic Regalia
The academic regalia worn by students and faculty are part of a tradition
that goes back to the first organized bodies of learning in the 12th Century.
Commemorating the completion of formal education in the United States, the
caps, gowns and hoods have been common apparel for the commencement
ceremony since 1885. The more elaborate the gown and hood, the higher the
degree. The silk lining of the hood bears the color or colors of the institution
from which the bearer graduated.
The hood colors associated with different subjects are as follows:
Apricot - Nursing
Brown - Fine Arts, Architecture
Citron - Social Work
Copper - Economics
Crimson - Journalism
Dark Blue - Philosophy
Drab - Commerce, Accountancy, Business
Golden Yellow - Science
Lemon Yellow - Library
Light Blue - Education
Maize - Agriculture
Orange - Engineering
Pink - Music
Purple - Law
Russet - Forestry
Sage Green - Physical Education
Scarlet - Theology
Silver Gray - Speech
White - Arts, Letters, Humanities
Mortarboards are the approved headgear.
The black tassels are worn on the left side of the caps.
Gold cording is worn by those graduating with honors.
Silver cording is worn by those receiving the Outstanding Scholar, Outstanding
Vocational/Technical Student and Outstanding Transfer Student Awards.
