Personal History
I have put this together to give you some idea of who I am and where I've been.
I also have enclosed my resume that covers the most recent ten years.
I have been in the automotive industry since I was 19-years old and going to col
lege. I began as a lot attendant ('Porter' as they were called then) but that l
asted only one year as I was drafted into the Army. The next two years were all
military service and I didn't get back to the auto industry until I was 23-year
s old.
I went to work for Burt Toyota in Englewood, Colorado as Finance producer. I wa
s married to my first wife then and we had just been blessed with a baby boy. I
stayed with Burt for a few years when World Service Life moved me to Kansas Cit
y to be Finance Director for Van Chevrolet in Shawnee Mission Kansas.
This is where I spent the bulk of my car years. I learned the business, front t
o back, top to bottom. As it turned out I had a real knack for Fixed Operations
and Used cars. I also found myself with the ability to sell just about anything
to anyone. I moved through out the store, taking on nearly all positions which
gave me the experience and education I needed to thoroughly understand the busin
ess. I eventually partnered with another gentleman and opened my own dealershi
p, Blue Ridge Motors in 1976. We carried VW, Mazda and added Porsche and Audi a
fter the first year. This was a successful business for me for several years un
til we sold the store in 1984.
From here, I moved back to my hometown of Enid, Oklahoma and bought a Chrysler d
ealership. One year later I bought the Dodge dealer out and combined the two. T
his was completely the wrong move as within the coming 13-months the oil industr
y took a nose dive. This resulted in a critical recession in Oklahoma. Much li
ke today, businesses were closing; banks were being taken over and closed by FDI
C, farming and cattle industries came to a screeching halt. Somewhere in the mid
dle of all that, I ended up in a divorce. OK, so maybe moving back home was tem
porary insanity and certainly felt like a black cloud for a while. So, with my
tail between my legs, I moved with my son back to Kansas City where they were st
ill selling cars! I formed my own wholesale business and was prosperous for the
next four years.
I met my current wife (she would know exactly when it was) during this period. W
e attended a family reunion (her family) in Phoenix and we fell in love with the
terrain and the weather (no ice storms). In 1991 we found ourselves moving to
Arizona. I gained employment with Powell Volvo-Mazda as a General Manager and wo
rked there until I bought Camelback VW, Saab and Subaru. This is where my resum
e picks up the history.
My son also came with us and currently (an old man himself) manages a Fletchers
automotive center. He is very successful and credits me (Ha) with teaching him F
ixed operations.
I have a beautiful granddaughter who will soon turn twelve but thinks she is twe
nty. She is an A/B student in school and belongs to our church's' youth group.
My wife and I have been married for 19-years and loving life. She is an amazing
person with a huge heart. In addition to working full time, she has a host of
volunteer activities that keep her busy. She is on the board for the Maricopa C
ounty Foster Care Review that is a county appointed task force that reviews the
case of each child who is in Foster Care on a regular basis. In addition, for t
he last four years she has been a CASA volunteer for the Juvenal Court System.
CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate. She is assigned by the court,
a child who is in the foster care system and it is her job to make sure that ch
ild is being taken care of by the foster parents and the CPS system, She also h
as to attend the case's court hearings and report to the judge anything that she
feels is lacking, remiss or unsafe for that child. She kind-of makes sure that
CPS and the foster parents do their job adequately. She doesn't stop there. S
he also teaches a youth Religious Education class at our church.
I also have volunteer activities...I am a Eucharistic Minister and Usher at our
church and I help out at St Vincent De Paul a few times each month. And, of cou
rse, my other activity is GOLF! I love dogs and yard work. No health problems.
My personality says 'persistence' and I prefer to stay busy and love challenges
. I am terminally organized and deliberate.
We are really just a simple, down to earth, family oriented household. Our mott
o is, 'We are only here to be truly helpful'.
