SOLVING PROBLEMS

An experiment is carried out to investigate the relationship between the acceleration on an object and its
mass. The arrangement of apparatus is as shown in figure below. The ticker timer is connected to the
alternating current of frequency 50 Hz> Each trolley has mass, m equals 1.0 kg. The results of the
experiment are shown in figure (a), (b), ( c) and (d). Figure (a) is shows the section of ticker tape when 1
trolley is used. Figure (b) for 2 trolleys , figure (c) for 3 trolleys and figure (d) for 4 trolleys.

( a) Based on the information given, state :

(i) the manipulated variable
(ii) the responding variable
(iii) the constant variable

(b) State the hypothesis for this experiment

( c) By using a ruler, determine the length of one initial dot (u) and one final dot (v) in figure (a), (b), (c)
and (d) and hence calculate the initial velocity, u, the final velocity, v and acceleration, a for each section of
ticker tape in figure (a), (b), (c) and (d).

Based on the calculation of acceleration, a, tabulate your results for m, a and 1/m

(d) Draw a graph of a versus 1/m

(c) State the relationship between the acceleration, a and mass, m

EQUATIONS FOR LINEAR MOTION WITH UNIFORM ACCELERATION:

Vertical
Sit uation
1. v = u + at
2. s = ut + ½ at v=0
u=0
3. s = (u + v ) t a=-g
2 = - 10 ms-2 a=+g
2 2 = + 10 ms-2
4. v = u + 2as
s = height
s = height

SOLVING PROBLEMS :

1. A car starts form rest and accelerates uniformly for 8.0 s. It reaches a final speed of 16 ms-1.
Calculate :
(a) the acceleration of the car.
(b) the average velocity of the car
(c) the distance travel by the car

2. An object is dropped from the top of the building takes 3.0 s to hit the ground. Calculate :
(a) the velocity before its hit the ground
(b) the height of the building

3. A new model Proton can start from rest and travel 400 m in 16.0 s. Calculate :
(a) its average acceleration during this time
(b) the final speed of the car.
(c) How fast is this final speed in kmh-1

4. An object is thrown vertically upwards from the surface of the earth at velocity of 20 ms-1. The
maximum height reached by the object is
