RAM Compatibility for E4 and E4 Ultra Series of Samplers

(excluding EIV and E64)

The E4 and E4 Ultra Series use 72-pin SIMM modules. These samplers can have up to 128MB of
RAM.

General Requirements:

All of these samplers require RAM SIMMs that have the following characteristics:

• 72-pin SIMM
• 70 nS or faster access time
• Parity or Non-Parity design
• EDO or Non-EDO (Extended Data Out)
• Glass Epoxy material, manufactured to JEDEC specifications

Most 72-pin SIMMs are standard configuration and are compatible. There is one particular and rare
style of SIMM called "ECC" type RAM has a different circuit design that will not work with E-MU
samplers.

The following information provides important details regarding RAM type and configuration for these
samplers:

1. Each of these samplers uses 2 RAM SIMM slots with a total capacity of up to 128MB.
2. Each one of these slots could hold up to a 64MB RAM SIMM.
3. You can use 4MB, 16MB or 64MB SIMMs in these products.
4. If you fill one slot only with a RAM SIMM, use slot 1. RAM will not be detected if it is only
installed in SLOT 2.
5. If you install two similar sized RAM SIMMs, install one in each of the slots and the total
memory will be the sum of the two RAM SIMMs. For example, two 16MB SIMMs will provide
32MB of sample memory.
6. If you install two different size RAMs, install the LARGER size SIMM in SLOT 1. The
SMALLER sized RAM should be installed in SLOT 2.
7. When you install two different size RAM, your total amount of RAM will be the capacity of
SLOT 1 plus HALF of the capacity of slot 2. For example, if you install a 64MB SIMM in slot 1
and a 16MB RAM in slot 2, you will have 72MB of total memory.

While 72-pin SIMMs are no longer used in today's tech products, they are still readily available. If you
do not have a reputable supplier in your area we recommend using an Internet search engine to find
RAM for your E-MU product. E-MU Systems Inc. does not make or sell RAM. Due to manufacturing
tolerences it is possible for RAM to meet the above specifications and still not work correctly. Because
of this we recommend you purchase RAM that can be refunded or exchanged.

Drive Compatibility for E4 and E4 Ultra Series of Samplers

(excluding EIV and E64)

Most E-MU and ENSONIQ products use some kind of mass storage to store or retrieve sounds or
recordings. Since the product lines of both companies span over a quarter of a century, it is impossible
to list hard drives that will work with all products. However, we often receive reports from end users
who have purchased one drive or another, and their experience over a period of time is probably the
best recommendation that can be made for a specific drive and model.

With that in mind, below is a list of CD-ROM drives, Hard Drives, and Removable Storage systems
that are reportedly known to work properly with E-MU Samplers.

NOTE: E-MU tests these SCSI drives externally. EOS 4.0 series support hard drives up to 20Gb (EOS
3 and below support up to 9Gb). We know larger drives should work provided the meet the
specifications stated here and in your owner's manual.

Important! E-MU samplers provide a maximum drive spin-up amperage of 1.7 amps / 12 volt for an
internal hard drive (IDE or SCSI). If the drive requires more spin up power it should not be used
internally. Spin up amperage differs from operating amperage. Consult the documentation of the hard
drive to confirm your drive's spin-up amperage requirements. This is usually not a problem with IDE
drives (Ultra only).

Important! E-MU samplers use proprietary power harnesses. Using an off the shelf power harness
may harm your sampler or your hard drive. EPR sells the correct power harness.

Please be aware that E-MU Systems Inc. cannot guarantee that every drive listed will work, due to
drive firmware changes and other factors. If you are in the market for a new drive, we highly
recommend you purchase a drive from a reputable supplier who will allow you to either try the drive
before you buy it or return it if it proves to be incompatible with your sampler. It should be noted as
well that, although there are several CD-R and CD-RW drives listed, they can only be used as read-
only drives in conjunction with your E-MU sampler. E-MU Systems does not make or sell hard drives.

Comment:

user - once upon a time I put an 80Gb drive in my E5000 with EOS4.7 without problems. I think
the limit for EOS4.7 is something like 128Gb (or 137Gb depending on the math used) because
that hardware/firmware came out when the ATA interface addressing limit was 28-bit. Newer
computers/BIOS/OSes can handle 48-bit addressing making the max hard drive size a lot
bigger... Thanks!
