SYNOPSIS:
My experience includes all phases of electrical design and supervision. My engin
eering experience has been mainly in power distribution, generation, substations
and switchyards, but I do have considerable experience in Petro-Chemical and as
sociated industries electrical design. My background includes all the physical d
esign as well as the schematics and wiring diagrams for all types of installatio
ns. In the execution of a normal project, I am usually responsible for the plann
ing stages, and developing the electrical conceptual design, sizing the major el
ectrical equipment (Front End Design), and later, when required, electrical esti
mates of the installed cost. Working with the Process Engineers and the Client,
I have established the Area Classification drawings of the various process units
, using the NFPA documents or API-RP-500A, My experience also includes the desig
n of the grounding, lightning, and when required, a Cathodic Protection system.
Lighting, Power Distribution and control, and Emergency Shut-down systems follow
. I have designed all types of motor and equipment controls, using the P&ID's or
Client preferences, including the necessary circuitry for computer control of t
he process units, including PLC's. My Instrumentation experience, while not as d
eep as my electrical experience, is certainly adequate to allow me to "hold my o
wn" while working with others. I am able to program the ladder logic directly in
to the PLC's of several different manufacturers equipment. I am familiar with va
rious systems, shut-down systems, and the different computer systems available o
n the market today. Other systems where I have experience include communication,
Plant Warning Systems, Aircraft warning Lights, Fire Alarm systems, and Shut Do
wn systems. I am computer literate, and work in Microsoft Windows, plus I use mo
st of the older programs that are still available for use today.
WORK HISTORY
Dyne Tek, Inc. Conroe, Texas (Contract Position)
Principal Electrical Designer, Feb. 2009 - Present
I am responsible for the design and checking of the Electrical and Control Syste
m drawing for the Compressor Stations for the Natural Gas Pipeline(s) from Texas
to Florida.
Shaw, Inc. Denver, Colorado, Electrical Designer, March 2008-Feb.2009
Keystone Power Plant: I was responsible for designing the interconnections from
the Vendor drawings to the DCS. When I arrived on the project, the drawing issue
s was 7 weeks behind schedule. With help from 1 other very competent designer, w
e got the drawings out and regained the lost time for the schedule. We issued 73
connection diagrams from scratch in 3.5 months. We both were recognized officia
lly for this effort.
The Washington Group, Denver, Colorado, Electrical Designer, April 2007 to March
2008, Exxon/Mobil Gas Project, Colorado. This project was a Gas gathering and i
njection well project. This was an on going project, and was responsible for all
new drawings for the physical installation and plant control.
JV Industries, Corpus Christi, Texas, Department Manager, December 2006-April.20
07: This was a new company and I was the Electrical Department Manager. We were
very successful in our bidding and front end estimating, as we were awarded many
small projects. During this time period finding and hiring qualified employees,
proved to be a impossible. I recommended that the Instrumentation and the Elect
rical Departments be combined under a single head, and when adopted, eliminated
my position. This relieved the immediate pressure because of the lack of qualifi
ed employees. With the employees of both departments doing double duty, producin
g electrical and instrument drawings, schedule were maintained.
Shaw, Inc. Denver, Colorado, Electrical Designer, August 2005-Dec.2005
Comanche Peak Power Plant: I was responsible for the lighting in the Boiler Buil
ding. There was 30 levels of platforms, stairs, and ladders, that had to be ligh
ted, plus the boiler controls. Point to Point lighting calculations were perform
ed and the necessary quantity of lighting panel boards determined and installed
to support this huge number of lighting fixtures. Each lighting circuit was anal
yzed for voltage drop.
Veco, Inc. Anchorage, Alaska, Electrical Designer, April 2005-Aug.2005
BP Gas Wells: I was responsible for the site design and control of a series of g
as producing wells. This design package included the Power and control for all m
otors, instrumentation, communications, process control, heat tracing, and the s
ite modular building design. All buildings at the well site were pre-fabricated
and set into place complete.
Dyne Tek, Inc. Houston, Texas, Electrical Inspector, April 2004 - April 2005
Port of Houston Ship Yard: I was hired as a Electrical Inspector and was respons
ible for the Electrical Installation for the new Port of Houston commercial load
ing/unloading shipyard, plus the new Cruise Line Terminal for the Gulf of Mexico
cruise lines. The main substation had a 13.8KV secondary voltage, which was to
power the 6 unloading cranes, over 4000 feet away. Also, the entire 2200 acre la
y down area for the shipping containers, was designed for refrigerated container
s. This made an elaborate electrical distribution system necessary, which was in
stalled. I verified that all electrical installations met the requirements of al
l codes while maintaining safe and adequate electrical installations.
Bechtel, Inc. Richland, Washington, Electrical Designer, June 2001- March 2004
WTP Nuclear Waste Project : I was brought in and made responsible for all standa
rd drawings and installation details. My duties included the design and draftin
g of all grounding, lighting, cable tray installations, cable schedules, motor s
chematics, and other miscellaneous standard drawings.
Gulf Interstates Engineering, Inc. Houston, Texas, Electrical Designer, February
2001- June 2001: Gas Line Compressor Station: I was responsible for a major por
tion of a revamp/expansion of a existing Compressor Station on the pipe line tha
t extends to (near) Tampa, Florida. I was responsible for gathering all the mete
ring information for transmission back to Houston, Texas. I did the substation e
xpansion for power to all the new revamp motors and miscellaneous power for the
station. I was also responsible for the above ground distribution system, while
others designed the underground distribution system.
Parsons, Inc. Greenville, North Carolina, Electrical Designer, November 1999- Fe
bruary 2001: I was responsible for the new design of the utilities of a existing
building that was being revamped to become a home for Internet Computers. This
building had to have a triple redundant electrical power supply. This power supp
ly consisted of the normal incoming electrical power, a 1500kva back-up UPS syst
em, plus a 2000kva diesel powered generator. I also was also the owners represen
tative for all power distribution within the building, lighting, and the extensi
ve grounding system.
Bechtel, Inc. Houston, Texas, Electrical Designer, April 1999-November 1999
Chevron Refinery: I was brought in to be the checker for this small Chevron reva
mp. My duties consisted of checking the grounding, lighting, cable tray system,
cable schedules, motor schematics, compressor controls, and other miscellaneous
drawings.
CCC, Athens, Greece, Electrical Designer, January 1999-April 1999
I was hired by this Greek company to go to Kuwait where a newly built Union Carb
ide plant had start-up issues. During start up, there was a major process upset,
and the plant diverted the entire process stream to the flare stack, with the r
esult being 43 feet of this flare tower being melted away. We replaced the flare
stack while determining the reason for the plant up-set. It was discovered that
when the block valves where closed, the motor actuator had run the valve gate a
s far closed as possible, that the valve had actually passed the closed position
and had started to re-open. Each of these closed valves were actually about 6%
open which caused the major up-set conditions.
BHP, Inc., Corpus Christi, Texas, Electrical Designer, March 1998-Dec. 1998
I was hired to lead the Electrical effort to do a complete revamp of a process f
acility that produced a granular form of EPC electrical insulation. This was a n
ew installation, but was discovered that the final product was too hot, and when
dropped into the final vessel for packaging, it congealed into a thirty ton glo
b of rubber. Our job was to completely disassemble the final process tower and d
ivide it into two streams of process which allowed the installation of a cooling
segment which overcame the problem. I led
this effort and had 6 other designers working for me. We completely redesigned t
he system with new drawings in 7 months, while the original effort took 23 month
s.
Bechtel, Inc., Houston, Texas, Electrical Designer, 1989-1998
I was a Senior Design Supervisor during this 17 year period. I was on Staff most
of this time. However, I led several jobs, and served as somewhat of a trouble
shooter. I traveled the world over, ie, Australia, Italy, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia,
England, plus many places in America where electrical problems arose, and for o
ne reason or another, a simple solution was not available. Without exception we
solved all these problems, some satisfactory and a few not so satisfactory. I wa
s the resident expert for Aircraft lighting of structures, Lightning Protection,
and a consultant for the National Electric Code and the National Electrical Saf
ety Code. All these jobs that I led were all Petro-Chemical or Power Distributio
n in nature. I led jobs for Aramco, Exxon, City Services, Chevron, Union Carbide
, Rome & Haas, American Oil, plus several smaller companies.
