:DOTRIX MODULAR
Digital printing has come of age

Introduce a :Dotrix Modular digital printing process to your Packaging

or POP and Display Business and you will save money while
significantly reducing your time to market.

The :Dotrix Modular gives you endless creative options for short and
medium runs. Increase the value of your end products by adding high
variable data (versioning) and customisation, while at the same time
freeing your offset and flexo-presses for what they were built for,
for longer print runs.

Agfa as an innovator in the development of industrial UV inkjet

production systems, has made another major technology advance.
This time with a low migration ink :Agorix LM, specifically developed
for the packaging market.
:Agorix LM also features six colour printing in CMYK, Orange
and Violet.
:DOTRIX MODULAR
Versatility - Productivity - Modularity
The versatile :Dotrix Modular press, is the most productive UV single pass printing press in the industry.
It is also the only digital press that is able to print with high production capacity onto a wide variety of
substrates ranging from flexible foils, 20 micron over self-adhesives, to folding carton up to 600 micron.

Its unique printing width of 63cm and the absence of repeats means jobs with a common size however with
variable data, run length, colour or language can be combined and run in the same pass. On the other hand
many different applications may have similar media requirements and the SPICE imaging heads allow these
to be grouped and run concurrently.

In addition, its modular construction allows traditional UV flexo printing stations, that can serve as coating
and varnishing alleys or extra colours, to be added to the roll-to-roll basic configuration. Slitting and die
cutting as well as sheeter installations can also be integrated to complete the system and ensure it is fully
tuned to your operation’s needs.

:Dotrix Modular offers a whole new range of options that will quickly have a positive impact on
your bottom line.

Compare productivity and flexibility to flexo presses

By the time you set up a flexo press :Dotrix Modular has finished the job. Switching from one job to another
is instant. At a stroke, plate costs, make-ready and waste are eliminated with the first sheet from a :Dotrix
Modular as profi table as the last.

:Dotrix Modular in detail
1 | Substrate input
The jumbo unwind system of the :Dotrix Modular can handle rolls
of up to 1.25 metres (49”) diameter, weighing up to 800 kg
(1,750 pound) providing long uninterrupted print runs. The reel is
lifted by two pneumatically driven arms that place the air mandrel
into safety chucks.

2 | Flexo station

Flexographic printing station with short drying tower and UV curing

system with chill roller.
A flexo printing station before the SPICE, could serve as a coating/
priming pass if you wish to print on difficult standard substrates.
This will greatly increase the print quality. Mounting a traditional
flexo plate gives endless combinations of flexo white or spot and
metallic colours with digital printing on top.
An integrated flexo printing station after SPICE could lay down a
top-finishing lacquer, giving your end product that high-quality

3 | SPICE printing unit

The Single Pass Inkjet Colour Engine six or four colour is the digital
heart of the engine, a stationary array of inkjet heads across the
web up to 63 cm wide. This technology delivers an impressive print
production of up to 1,209 square metres per hour.

4 | Flexo lamination or cold foil

This can be used to laminate the substrate or, in conjunction with a

standard flexo plate, to allow cold-foiling with a UV glue.

7 | Sheeting Tool

This module provides a fully integrated sheet cutting solution running

in line with the :Dotrix Modular. The base configuration is designed to
cut variable length sheets that are delivered onto a shingle delivery
table. Roll to roll functionality is available as an option. Other available
options include slitting and automated high pile stacking.

Accurate and reproducible colour
The :Dotrix Modular handles the incoming files from either
:Apogee ColorTune Spot and :Apogee ColorTune CMM or 3 rd party
pre-press systems. The unique colour management system ensures
very accurate reproduction of up to 90% reproduction of Pantone ®
colours with our own :Agorix UV-curable inks.

CMYK + OV
Agfa’s :Agorix ink family is not only available in CMYK + OV, also in a
low migration version.

Food industry
Printing with low-migration inks is crucial in the food service industry,
ensuring that no contamination occurs from the ink to the food inside.

Wide variety of substrates

:Dotrix Modular prints on a wide variety of substrates such as:
• PVC
• PE
• PET
• PS
• BOPP
• Aluminium
• Papers and Board (coated, uncoated, inkjet)
• Self adhesives (PE, PP, PVC, Paper)
• Multilayers

Substrate specific settings can be saved and re-used to further

minimise the set-up time in changing over substrates. Furthermore
screening type and dot gain compensation curves can be changed at
run-time to perfectly match different printing conditions.

Unlimited variability
Digital printing means variable data printing. Enhance your
productivity with our :Apogee Vibe workflow software. This software
adds variable data elements to an existing PDF file and is specifically
tailored to the Packaging and POP markets. The variable data
elements are produced only at the very last moment of the printing
process. This drastically reduces pre-press time when generating the
variable data and keeps RIP time and data to the absolute minimum.
Printing, converting, collating and packing time can be greatly
reduced with a powerful database.
