On Chinese Agricultural Trainees
and the Problem of Multicultural

The JSMR is a Japanese
organization that was established in
2002. The JSMR provides a forum
for scholars to discuss about the state
of multiculturalism in Japanese
society and to engage in cross-
cultural studies comparing Japan
with the various regions of the
world. The said organization
convenes an annual two-day
conference every October. It
publishes an annual journal,
Multicultural Relations, and the
biannual JSMR Newsletter.

Dr. Ardhana read a paper entitled
“Local Culture, Cultural Standards,
Collaboration Studies, and
Collaboration in the Context of
Global Social Sciences: Southeast
Asian Experiences.” In his paper,
Dr. Ardhana presented the role
played by the teaching of Cultural
Studies in Bali in developing a cross-
cultural theory and practice of the
Social Sciences. Meanwhile, Dr.
Castro presented a paper on “Clash
of Cultures: Teaching Social
Sciences in the Philippines.” In his
paper, Dr. Castro argued that the
present Philippine educational
system privileges Western Social
Science concepts that do not
necessarily match local realities. He
gave several such examples in the
realm of anthropology, demography,
history, and social psychology.
The World SSH Net is a new
organization that is officially
registered in Germany and headed by
Dr. Michael Kuhn. The said
organization aims to network scholars
beyond their disciplinary boundaries
and to promote non-hegemonic
international discourses. IFSSO
intends to co-sponsor a conference in
Bali, Indonesia with the World SSH
Net sometime in December 2011.
The tentative theme of this
conference is “The Challenges in
Social Sciences and Humanities in
Southeast Asia: Combining Global
and Local Culture?” The Udayana
University of Denpasar, Bali will host
the said activity.
