PRESS RELEASE
ARRIVALS OF FOREIGNERS IN GREECE, YEAR 2007
The General Secretariat of the National Statistical Service of Greece announces the results concerning the
arrivals of foreigners in Greece during 2007, as well as the passenger mobility of arrivals through charter
flights. All data are collected from administrative sources (Civil Aviation Authority and the Ministry of Public
Order) and from a sampling survey, which is contacted at the check points of passports of the country and
records the arrivals of passengers from countries under the Schengen treaty.
From the tables which follow, data show that during 2007 there has been an overall growth of foreign arrivals
in the country by 8.5% in comparison with the respective data of 2006.
Arrivals from Europe, which holds the biggest share of the tourist market (92.7%), showed an increase by
9.9% in comparison with 2006. Arrivals from the European Union increased by 20%. This growth arises from
the fact that the total of the European Union includes for 2007, the two new member states, Bulgaria and
Romania. The majority of foreigners, who are EU citizens, like 2006, came from the UK (15%), Germany
(12.9%) and Italy (6.6%). In comparison with the previous year and taking into account the share they hold in
the total of arrivals, the highest increase is presented in the two new members, Bulgaria (62.4%) and
Romania (83.1%). Concerning the other European Union countries, there are some minor changes in
Germany and UK, a remarkable increase by 5.9% in Netherlands and a reduction by 2.6% in Italy. In the other
continents there is a significant increase in the countries of America (12.9%) and remarkable reductions in
Asia (-6.1%), Africa (-9.3%) and Oceania (-6.1%).
Analyzing the data by mean of transport and point of entrance we notice that, during 2007, the airports
gathering the largest traffic following the ''El Venizelos'' (22.1%) are those of: Iraklio (11.9%), Rodos (7.9%),
Kerkyra (4.8%) and Thessaloniki (4.4%). In comparison with the previous year, and taking into account the
share they hold in the total of arrivals, considerable increases are presented in the airports of Rodos (7.2%),
Chania (6.5%) and Kos (4.9%).
The arrivals of passengers through charter flights, in 2007, showed an increase by 2.6% compared to those of
2006. Yet, the UK (26.3%) and Germany (17.2%) continue to hold the biggest shares. However, comparing
with 2006, UK showed a reduction (-2.4%) and Germany a slight increase (1.4%). Out of the countries that
hold big shares in the total arrivals, those showing the biggest rise are: the Netherlands (6.1%), Italy (9.1%),
the Czech Republic (8.3%) and Norway (8%), whereas a significant reduction is observed in Austria (-8%) and
Belgium (-7.6%).
Detailed data are given in the attached tables and charts as well as in the website of the N.S.S.G. (http://
