Introduction

In the race to get new and innovative products to market faster, manufacturing and product
development companies face many challenges including globalization, cost reductions, and
shorter development schedules. In addition, the products must also meet safety, reliability,
environmental, and maintenance objectives.

The world’s top manufacturing companies and leading industry research firms agree that
performing realistic simulation earlier in the design process has had a substantial positive
impact on time, profitability and competitiveness. Integrating realistic simulation into the
design process has also given manufacturers the ability to evaluate the performance of
multiple design alternatives prior to physical prototyping, making it possible to develop
high-quality products for the market in less time and at a lower cost. However, the wide-
spread use of CAD-integrated simulation, referred to in this paper as “design-integrated
realistic simulation”, has not grown as rapidly in its use or delivered as fully on its promises
of revolutionizing product development as had been predicted.

This white paper gives a view on current industry practices that may have contributed to the
slower than expected adoption of CAD-integrated analysis. It provides information from recent
industry studies illustrating how Best-in-Class companies are leveraging design-integrated
realistic simulation to their advantage. And it also highlights a new generation of analysis
solutions that is delivering a new paradigm for design-integrated realistic simulation by provi-
ding fully-integrated, robust, scalable and collaborative set of tools that can be easily shared
by design engineers and analysis experts.

The solution uses the same underlying data model and proven finite element analysis (FEA)
solver technology for basic and advanced design analysis, completely within a collaborative
design and product lifecycle management (PLM) environment. The solution enables users
to leverage not only linear FEA methods, but also nonlinear analysis technology that allows
users to analyze the complex response of advanced materials being used in real-world
designs. This white paper concludes by providing suggestions on what to look for when
evaluating and implementing a design-integrated realistic simulation solution.
