Question 1

A parallel plate capacitor, with dielectric material in between the plates, is

connected to the power supply, until the capacitor is fully charge, as shown in
Figure (a). Then, the dielectric material is removed as shown in Figure (b). After
the system is stable, the power supply is removed, then the same dielectric
material being inserted back, as shown in Figure (c). Determine the changes
(if any) to the capacitance, C, and electric field, E of the capacitor C once we
moved from Figure (a) to Figure (b) to Figure (c).

Question 2

A parallel plate capacitor filled with air is charged by connecting to a battery of voltage
Vs as shown in Figure 2(a). After the capacitor is fully charged, a dielectric
material is inserted between the plates, and then the battery is removed as shown
in Figure 2(b). Then one of the plates is replaced by a larger size of plate as
shown in Figure 2(c). Determine the changes (if any) in charge stored, Q, and
electric field, E, of the capacitor when the process is done from
i. Figure 2(a) to Figure 2(b).
ii. Figure 2(b) to Figure 2(c).

Question 3

Figure 3 shows three capacitors labeled with Ca, Cb, and Cc. The area of all the
plates is the same which is 0.1 mm2 per plate. The plates are separated by the
distance d1 = 0.5 cm and d2 = 0.25 cm. The dielectric material has the same
dielectric constant, κ =2.60. Find the:
i) individual capacitance Ca, Cb, and Cc.
ii) equivalent capacitance, Ceq, if the circuit is connected to a power supply
through terminal (e)-(f).

Question 4

A commercial capacitor is constructed as shown in Figure 4. This particular

capacitor is made from two strips of aluminum separated by a strip of
paraffin-coated paper. Each strip of foil and paper is 7.00 cm wide. The foil
is 0.004 mm thick and the paper is 0.025 mm thick and has a dielectric
constant of 3.70. What length should the strips be if capacitance of
9.50 x 10-8 F is desired before the capacitor is rolled up ?
(Hint: area = width x length)

of capacitors shown in Figure 5. If a 12.0 V power supply is connected through
the terminal a-b, how much is the energy stored inside the 5.0 µ F capacitor?
