1.0 Introduction
The search for SEAMEO Young Scientists is a gathering of young scientists all
over Southeast Asia and beyond as a venue for sharing and dissemination of
information on their scientific and mathematical research projects. It was
initiated in 1997 and, since then, has been held every two years with a specific
theme.

7.0 Criteria for Nomination of Students
7.1 Students should be the subject of His Majesty The Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of
Negara Brunei Darussalam.
7.2 This competition is open to all Year 9 students.
7.3 Each team will consist of 2 students only and 1 supervising teacher.
7.4 The working language is in English.
7.5 Students do not suffer from any chronic diseases. (medically and physically
healthy)
7.6 Students should be competent in reading, writing and have good command of
English Language.
7.7 Considerably competent in ICT
7.8 Preference should be given to students who have :
Participated actively in extra-curricular activities.
Demonstrated good personality, open-mindedness and satisfactory discipline
record.
7.9 Willing to undergo training sessions and other necessary preparations at any
time required including during school term holidays, weekends or after
school hours (if selected)
7.10 Be prepared to share information on the experiences with any agencies
upon return from attending the programme (for example a discussion
session ) (if selected)
7.11 Submit a report on his/ her participation, not more than two weeks after
attending the programme (if selected to represent the country).
7.12 Be prepared to participate in any follow-up programmes arranged or coordinated
by STEP centre after attending the programme.
7.13 Should have the consent from parents / guardian as well as permission and
approval from Principal of School/ College.
8.1 Teachers should be the subject of His Majesty The Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of
Negara Brunei Darussalam.
8.2 Must have at least 5 years of teaching experience in mathematics / science.
8.3 Do not suffer from any chronic diseases (medically and physically healthy)
8.4 Competent in reading, writing and has a good command of English Language.
8.5 Considerably competent in ICT
8.6 Priority should be given to teachers who have :
Participated actively in extra-curricular activities.
Demonstrated good personality, open-mindedness and satisfactory discipline
record.
8.9 The teacher must be willing to become trainer at school level and team
trainer if he / she is selected to represent the country.
8.10 Be prepared to supervise students from respective schools /colleges during
the training session at any venues; at any time required including
during school term holidays, weekends or after school hours. (if selected)
8.11 Be prepared to become facilitator for the programme. (if selected)
8.12 Be prepared to share information on the experiences with any agencies
upon return from attending the programme (for example a discussion
session ) (if selected)

8.13 Be prepared to participate in any follow-up programmes arranged or coordinated
by STEP centre after attending the programme. (if selected)
8.14 Submit a report on his/ her participation, not more than two weeks after
attending the event (if selected to represent the country).
9.1 The project must be related to the theme; “Beyond 2012: Greening the
Environment for a Sustainable Future”.
9.2 The project must be an original work.
9.3 The project must:
- be a result of a current continuing or parallel scientific research and
investigation and NOT a duplication of any previous research;
- demonstrate and apply scientific and mathematics principles or attempt to
provide new concepts in the process of designing technological activities or
creating technological inventions to meet the needs of societal development;
- have relevance or contribute to the livelihood development of society or
community and environment, in meeting human needs and/or promoting the
socio-economic growth of the society; and the community in particular;
- reflects the needs of the community and how it can be sustained in particular;
and
- be cost-efficient, environment-friendly and feasible.
9.4 Students can analyse real environment data using mathematical principles.
9.5 students can also design mathematical models using mathematical principles.
