A workshop

 Cultural Diversity What are the objectives of the training?

 What are the challenges of dealing with culturally diverse populations.

 What social work obligations are undertaken by the social worker?

 Participants compile a list of goals that they need to attain at the end of the training

session.

 This may be an interactive session between facilitator and participants.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP

 A workshop goal has been identified. In this case, dealing with various diversity

issues that may arise in the course of social work.

 Participants are asked to contribute their views to the topical issue and a consensus is

reached on the crucial issues.

 The next step is to make a decision on what the workshop objectives are taking into

account the calibre of the participants. A model of reference to determine this could

be Tuckman ‘forming, storming,norming, performing model or the Tannenbaum &

Schmidt model to set boundaries on the leeway levels and accountability allocated to

the team during the workshops and what follow-up activities will occur.

Decision time; what objectives are identified?

 Date, time and location of workshop is set.

 A date is set and then disseminated to participants who can give their views on its

suitability.

 Like wise the location.

 Once feedback is obtained, these two can be confirmed.


 It is important to set a time line in which you hope to accomplish the acquisition of

certain skills and/or knowledge. This timeline will guide your choice of method and

material to cover in order to achieve your objectives.(

Timeline

 Introduction to the workshop

 Question and Answer Session

 At commencement of the workshop, there is an introduction and outline of the aims

and timetable. A consensus on expected outcomes is reached and queries are

answered. This should take about 5 mins.

Aligning the objective with aims of workshop

 Where are the problem areas within social work areas of the workshop.

 What social work theories are necessary to understand the relevance of social work to

culturally diverse populations?

 What are the skill sets necessary to undertake the required social work tasks?

 Ideas and opportunities are brainstormed with the group using a flip chart or other

device. The process should take 10-20mins.

Brainstorming

 Every participant to choose a number, either 1 or 2.

 The participants are divided into groups depending on what number they chose.

 Groups come up with individual topics of discussion that break down the topic into

sub-sections that are easier to handle.

 The group is divided into pairs or threes which then come up with an agenda which

will assist in achieving the goals of training. 20-30mins.


Group work

 Every group is given five minutes for a presentation of their ideas.

 Facilitator will review and critique and adopt the progressive ideas while returning the

rest for review to the group.

 Group presentation; each group is given a maximum of 5 mins to air their ideas and

receive praise or critique for it.

Group presentations

 Once goals are set then participants embark on refinement and break down into finer

details.

 SMARTER acronym is used to refine objectives by practicality.

 Once the agenda has been set and tasks agreed upon, then participants refine the

outline and identify clear and SMARTER objectives; which can then be implemented

during the workshop.

Refinement of goals and objectives.

 Monitoring of results of training.

 Evaluation of learning curve.

 Arrangement of re-training should it be deemed necessary.

 This is followed up by training, heartening, supporting and inviting ideas for further

training and development.
