 THREE OF AESOP´S FABLES
1. THE LION AND THE MOUSE
Once when a Lion was asleep a little Mouse began running
up and down upon him. This soon wakened the Lion, who placed
his huge paw upon him, and opened his big jaws to swallow him.
"Pardon, O king," cried the little Mouse: "forgive me this time,
I shallnever forget it: who knows but what I may be able to do you a
turn some of these days?" The Lion was so tickled at the idea of the
Mouse being able to help him, that he lifted up his paw and let him go.
Some time after the Lion was caught in a trap, and the hunters
Who desired to carry him alive to the King, tied him to a tree while
they went in search of a waggon to carry him on.
Just then the little Mouse happened to pass by, and seeing the sad
plight in which the Lion was, went up to him and soon gnawed away
the ropes that bound the King of the Beasts. "Was I not right?" said
the little Mouse, " LITTLE FRIENDS MAY PROVE GREAT FRIENDS."
2. THE FOX AND THE CROW
A Fox once saw a Crow fly off with a piece of cheese in its beak
and settle on a branch of a nearby tree. "That's for me, as I am a Fox," thought the
fox and he walked up to the foot of the tree.
"Good-day, Mistress Crow," he cried. "How well you are looking
to-day: how glossy your feathers; how bright your eye. I feel sure your
voice must surpass that of other birds, just as your figure does; let me
hear but one song from you that I may greet you as the Queen of Birds."
The Crow lifted up her head and began to caw her best, but the
moment she opened her mouth the piece of cheese fell to the ground,
only to be snapped up by Master Fox.
"Thank you my friend" said he. "if in addition to your vanity
you also had some wisdom you would not need this advise;
"DO NOT TRUST FLATTERERS."
3. THE DOG AND THE SHADOW
It happened that a Dog had got a piece of meat and was
carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace. Now on his way
home he had to cross a plank lying across a running brook. As he
crossed, he looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the
water beneath.
Thinking it was another dog with another piece of meat, he
made up his mind to have that also. So he made a snap at the
shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of
meat fell out, dropped into the water and was never seen more.
THE MORAL -- BEWARE LEST YOU LOSE THE SUBSTANCE
BY GRASPING AT THE SHADOW.
TRES FABULAS DE ESOPO
1. EL LEÓN Y EL RATÓN.
Alguna vez cuando dormía un León, un Ratón empezó
a juguetear encima de su cuerpo. Despertó el león y con su gran
garra atrapó al Ratón; y al punto de devorarlo abrio su mandibula.
"Perdóname; ¡oh Rey! -- le pidió el Ratoncito -- discúlpame esta vez y nunca me
olvidaré de ti : quién sabe si algun día te devuelva el favor." Al pensar que un
Ratoncito era capaz de ayudarle, el León echó a reír y lo dejó marchar.
Pocos días después el León fue apresado en una trampa y los cazadores,
pensando llevarlo a su Rey, lo ataron con una cuerda a un frondoso árbol y salieron
a buscar un carruaje. Pasó por ahí el Ratón, y se dio cuenta del estado lamentable
del León, corrió al lugar y rápidamente royó las cuerdas que ataban al Rey de las
bestias.
"¿ No tenía yo la razón?-- preguntó el Ratón--
PEQUEÑOS AMIGOS SE PUEDEN CONVERTIR EN GRANDES AMIGOS”
2. LA ZORRA Y EL CUERVO.
Una Zorra espió a un Cuervo volando con un pedazo de queso en su pico hasta
que aterrizó en la rama de un árbol cercano. "Yo lo quiero y yo soy Zorra" pensó y
se acercó al pie del árbol.
"Buen día señorita Cuervo -- comentó-- ¡qué bella su apariencia, su plumaje tan
lustroso y sus ojos brillantes! Seguramente su voz sobrepasa las de todos los
otros pájaros igual que sus elegantes proporciones. ¿Me canta una canción para
reconocerla como la Reina de todas las aves?”
El Cuervo, para demostrar a la Zorra que no le faltaba la voz, soltó el queso para
lanzar con orgullo fuertes graznidos. La Zorra rápidamente cogió el pedazo de
queso y dijo:
"Gracias amiga Cuervo, si además de vanidad tuvieras inteligencia,
no necesitarías este consejo: NO CONFÍES EN LOS ADULADORES”.
3. EL PERRO Y EL REFLEJO
Le pasó a un Perro que se apoderó de un pedazo de carne y lo llevaba en su hocico
a casa para comerlo tranquilamente. Por el camino tuvo que pasar por un tablón
sobre un arroyo. Al pasar vio hacia abajo y notó su propio reflejo en el agua.
El Perro creyó que aquel reflejo era en realidad otro Perro que también llevaba un
trozo de carne. Decidió adueñarse de ese pedazo también, mas cuando soltó el
suyo para echar una mordida al otro, su pedazo de carne cayó en el arroyo y se lo
llevó la corriente.
LA MORALEJA: CODICIANDO EL BIEN AJENO
