Lab 1 Use of FDISK

Student name __________________________________________

IMPORTANT WARNING : If you use the following steps on a hard disk that is not empty, all of
the data on that hard disk is permanently deleted.

Objective
In this exercise, the student will learn how to use FDISK to form partitions on a Hard Disk Drive,
and then create logical drives within the partition.

Equipment
The following equipment is required for this exercise:
A computer system with a Hard Disk Drive Caddie, a floppy disc with FDISK on it.

Procedures
Before beginning this lab, make sure that the caddie is inserted correctly, before it is powered up.
Do not remove the Caddie whilst the P.C. is powered up.

Step 1: Running FDISK

Set up the BIOS so that the P.C. boots from a FDD.

Insert the Win 98 boot disk in the floppy disk drive, restart your computer, and then use the
following method.
When the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, select the Start computer without
CD-ROM support menu option, (Usually 3) then press ENTER
At the command prompt (A:), type fdisk, and then press ENTER
As your hard disk is larger than 512 MB, you receive the following message:
Your computer has a disk larger than 512 MB. This version of Windows includes
improved support for large disks, resulting in more efficient use of disk space on large
drives, and allowing disks over 2 GB to be formatted as a single drive.
IMPORTANT: If you enable large disk support and create any new drives on this disk, you will not
be able to access the new drive(s) using other operating systems, including some versions of
Windows 95 and Windows NT, as well as earlier versions of Windows and MS-DOS. In addition,
disk utilities that were not designated explicitly for the FAT32 file system will not be able to work
with this disk. If you need to access this disk with other operating systems or older disk utilities, do
not enable large drive support.
1
Do you wish to enable large disk support?

Press Y and then press ENTER.

Step 2: Preparation

Display partition information and if there is an existing partition then delete it.

What is the size of this Hard Disk Drive? __________________________

Step 3:

Now create a Primary DOS partition, which is 25% of the total available space.

What is the size of the primary DOS partition you have just created? ______________________

Is it 25% of the total amount available? _______________________

Step 4:

Now create an Extended DOS partition, which uses the remainder of the available space.

What is the size of the partition you have just created? _______________________

Step 5:

Now form a number of logical drives within the extended partition, each of these to use one third

of the remaining space available.

How many logical drives have you formed? _____________________

Write down the letter and size of each logical drive ___________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

Step 6:

Now make the primary partition Active.

Before going on to the next step the Tutor must check your work and sign below.

Work done satisfactorily? __________ No of logical drives _____________

Logical drives of equal size? _____________ Primary partition active? __________

Tutor to sign ________________________________

Step 6:

Delete all the logical drives, starting with the highest letter first.

Now remove the extended partition

Then delete the primary DOS partition,

Step 7:

Create a primary DOS partition which is 30% of the maximum size available.

Make this partition Active

What is the size of this partition? ______________________

Compare with disk size noted on step 2

What is the difference between the two values? ________________________

Create an extended DOS partition which is 25% of the maximum size available.

Step 8:

Install an operating system supplied to you.

Ensure that you set the keyboard and country as UK rather than US. (default settings)

I have completed the above work on my own, completely unaided.
