User Manual BTS Maintenance – BTS Terminal Maintenance
M900/M1800 Base Transceiver Station (BTS22C) 1 Introduction

1 Introduction

1.1 BTS Terminal Maintenance

In GSM system, BTS (Base Transceiver Station) is generally located far away from
BSC (Base Station Controller), so it is usually unattended. Maintenance and
supervision operations on BTS are carried out remotely at BSC side. But when field
maintenance are necessary, local BTS terminal maintenance becomes indispensable.
Usually, BTS terminal maintenance is carried out through installing BTS terminal
maintenance software on a PC (either a desktop or laptop, the latter is usually
preferred) and is connected to MMU board through serial communication cable (MMU
board is equipped with a 9-pin serial communication cable socket). As in the case of
BTS maintenance, BTS terminal maintenance operations are also carried out in terms
of BTS logic objects. As for the logic objects and their various status, they have already
been described in detail in BTS Maintenance Part One, it would be unnecessary to
repeat it here.

1.2 Operations of Site Maintenance Terminal System

As the operations in site maintenance terminal system are performed locally over a
single PC, they are somewhat different from those in BTS maintenance. Detailed
description on these operations is to be given in this section.

1.2.1 User Login

I. Function

A user must first log in site maintenance terminal system before being authorized to
perform any maintenance operations over the console.

II. Login

Click on the fifth button on the toolbar, or choose [User Management/User Login]
menu to pop up a "User Login" window. Enter user name and password, then click
<OK> button. See Figure 1-1.

After the user is successfully logged in, the above-mentioned window would be
automatically closed and the user can proceed to perform desired operations. If the
login fails, the reason would be displayed in the window.

1.2.2 Interface Operations

As shown in Figure 1-2, the interface of site maintenance terminal system is divided
into the following parts: menu, toolbar, BTS logic object, object function, alarm window,
status bar and etc. All the menu commands in the menu are easy to understand and
the buttons on the toolbar are shortcuts for these commands. Move the cursor on a
button to display its functions.

BTS logic objects and their functions will be described later. This part focuses on alarm
functions.
As shown in Figure 1-3, the part in light blue on the interface of site maintenance
terminal system is BTS alarm display part, that means, when an alarm occurs to BS, it
would be displayed in this part of the interface. Double click any alarm message in, it
would display an "Alarm Detailed Explanation" window for this alarm, as shown in
Figure 1-5. Right click a certain alarm message would pop up a menu as shown in
Figure 1-4. Choose commands on the menu, and the functions of message setting,
saving, clearing and scrolling can be performed over the message in the alarm

I. Connect the terminal O&M cable

Both ends of a BTS terminal operations & maintenance cable are DB9 connectors.
One end is connected to the terminal O&M interface on the MOP board at the side of
BS, and the other is connected to a serial port of an operation terminal (usually, a
laptop computer). The pin-to-pin correspondence between the two DB9 connectors at
the two ends of the cable is described in Table 2-1.

Table 2-1 Pin-to-pin correspondence between the two DB9 connectors at the two ends of an O&M
cable

Operation terminal side connector 3 2 5

II. Start the terminal O&M system

On an operation terminal (usually, a laptop computer), run BTS terminal application

program MMI. If MMI gets connected to BS, a main man-machine interface for BTS
O&M system would be displayed as shown in Figure 2-1.

Figure 2-1 BTS O&M man-machine interface

If MMI still cannot get connected to BTS after all these settings, check whether the
hardware connection of maintenance cables and the serial port hardware of the
operation terminal is normal.

III. User login

After MMI gets connected to BS, choose [User Management/User Login] menu to
open a dialogue box as shown in Figure 2-3. Enter "User Name" and "User Password",
then click <OK> button. If the entered "User Name" and "User Password" are both
correct, this dialogue box would disappear, which indicates that the user successfully
logs in. Otherwise, a "Wrong Username or Password" prompt would be displayed.
