ORDINANCES FOR MASTER OF ARTS EXAMINATIONS (ANNUAL SYSTEM)

Applicability of Ordinances for the time being in force :

Notwithstanding the integrated nature of course spread over
more than one academic year, the Ordinances in force at the time a student joins a course shall hold good only
for the examination held during or at the end of the academic year. Nothing in these ordinances shall be
deemed to debar the University from amending the ordinances subsequentiy and the amended ordinances, if
any, shall apply to all the students whether old or new.
1. The course for the degree of Master of Arts shall be spread over two academic years to be called Part-I
and Part-II. The examination for Part-I and Part-II shall be held in the month of April/May or on such
other dates as may be fixed by the University. The supplementary examination for candidates who are to
reappear in one paper/one additional subject shall be held in the month of September or on such other
dates as may be fixed by the University.
2. The last date by which admission form complete in all respects and fees, for both Part-I and Part-Il
examinations must reach the Controller of Examinations shall be as follows :

Examination
(a) The amount of admission fee to be paid by a candidate for each part shall be as prescribed by the
University from time to time.
For improvement of marks/division, the fee as prescribed will be charged for each part.
(b) Candidates shall submit their admission forms for admission to the examination countersigned by
the authorities as mentioned in the relevant Ordinances.
3. The following shall be the subjects out of which a candidate can offer one :
English, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Persian, Sanskrit, History, Economics, Political Science, Philosophy,
Public Administration, Sociology, Defence and Strategic Studies, Anthropological Linguistics and
Punjabi Language, Religious Studies, Theatre and Television, Social Work, Fine Art, Music
(Instrumental and Vocal), Folk Art and Culture, Dance, Education, Journalism and Mass Communication
and Sikh Studies.
4. (i) The medium of examination for subjects in the Faculty of Languages shall be the language
concerned and for other subjects English or Punjabi.
(ii) The medium of examination for M.A. Music, Dance, Fine Arts, Folk Arts and Culture and Theatre
& Television shall be Punjabi or English or Hindi.
Provided that candidates for M.A. Sanskrit and M.A. Persian examination shall be permitted, at
their option, to offer medium of examination as under:
M.A. Sanskrit Sanskrit or Hindi or Punjabi
M.A. Persian Persian or Urdu or Punjabi
5. The syllabus shall be such as may be prescribed by the University, from time to time.
6. The minimum number of marks required to pass shall be 35 percent in each theory paper/practical
paper/teaching skill separately.
7. (a) A candidate who fails in not more than one paper of M.A. Part-l or Part-II may be allowed
exemption in the papers in which he has passed and he may clear that one paper at the sonsecutive
subsequent supplementary/annual examination within a period of one year on payment of prescribed
fee on each occasion; provided that the candidates declared reappear in Part-I examination, shall be
eligible to seek provisional admission to M.A. Part-II class.
If he passes in that paper within the prescribed period he shall be deemed to have passed the
examination. If he does not clear M.A. Part-I examination within the prescribed period he will be
declared fail and his result for M.A. Part-II shall stand cancelled.
(b) The candidate will have to pass the M.A. Examination within the period of four years.
 (c)A candidate who is placed under reappear in one paper
of Part-I examination, may forego the exemption and appear in all the papers of Part-I at the
subsequent annual examination as a private candidate. Such a candidate shall not be eligible to join
next higher class or appear in the next examination.
The conditions stipulated in this Ordinance shall also apply to Private Candidates.
8. The grace marks shall be allowed according to the general ordinances relating to 'Award of Grace Marks'
These ordinances will apply to all the examinations. .
(i) Upto 1% of the total marks of Part-l and II examination
shall be added to the aggregate of both Part-I and Part-II examinations to award a higher
division/55% marks, to a candidate.
(ii) Grace marks to be given shall be calculated on the basis of 1% of total aggregate marks of all the
written and practical papers of the examination concerned. Marks for viva-voce/internal
assessment/sessional work/skill in teaching/any additional/optional subject shall not be taken into
account for this purpose. If a fraction works out to half or more, it shall count as one mark and
fraction less than half shall be ignored.
(iii) To pass in one or more written papers or subjects, and/or to make up the aggregate to pass the
examination but not in practical, sessional work, internal assessment, viva-voce and skill in
teaching.
9. Three weeks after the termination of the examination or as soon as thereafter as possible the Registrar
shall publish a list of candidates who have passed the examination. Each successful candidate in Part-I
and Part-II examination shall receive a certificate of having passed that examination. A list of successful
candidates in the Part-II examination be arranged in three Divisions according to Ordinance 10 and the
division obtained by the candidate will be stated in his degree.
10. Successful candidate who obtains 75% marks or more of the aggregate marks in Part-I & II examination
taken together shall be declared to have passed the examination with distinction and who obtains 60% or
more of the aggregate marks shall be placed in first division. Those who obtain 50% or more but less than
60% shall be placed in the second division and all below 50% shall be placed in the third division.
11. The Part-I examination shall be open to a person who atleast one academic year previously :
*(A) has passed B.A. with Honours with 50% marks in the subject of the Post-graduate course and 50%
in the aggregate.
OR
has passed Bachelor Degree Examination (additional subject also)

* In the matter of calculating percentage of marks secured by a candidate in the lower examination for admission to a higher course
if fraction worked out to ½ or more it should be counted as 1 and fraction less than ½ be be ignored.
(i) For determining the eligibility for M.A. Eng./Pbi. examination, the marks obtained by the candidate in English Literature/Punjabi
Literature and not in English Communication Skill/Punjabi (Comp.) Shall be taken into account.
(ii) The following categories of the candidates seeking admission to M.A. course in the Faculty of Social Science, Languages, Arts &
Culture, Education and Information Science shall be required in terms of Ordinances relating to M.A. examination to have
obtained at least 45% marks in the subject of post-graduate course and 50% marks in the aggregate of B.A. or 45% in the
aggregate and 50% in the subject of P.G. Course to become eligible for admission.
(a) Candidates taking part in sports and other co-curricular activities viz. debate and dramatics who had represented India at
International level for the state at the inter-state level for the University at the Inter-University level or the sportsman who
are winners or runners up at the University level matches; and
(b) Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes.
(c) Physically Handicapped.

OR
has passed the Master's degree examination in any Faculty.
OR
has passed the B.A. (Pass) examination obtaining at least 50% marks in the subject of Post-graduate
course and 50% marks in the aggregate.
(B) For admission to post-graduate courses in the following subjects, candidates who have passed at
B.A. level any of the co-lateral subjects (with 50% marks in the subject concerned and 50% marks
in the aggregate including additional optional subject) or have passed with 50% marks in aggregate
of an examination other than B.A, as indicated against each shall also be eligible :

Note : Dramatic Art/Music/Dance/Fine Arts will be preferred.
12.Religious Studies B.A. degree in any Faculty from Punjabi University or from any other recognised University
(with 50% marks obtained in that degree, provided that he has not passed M.A. (Religious
Studies) examination previously.
13. Sikh Studies The examination shall be open to a person who atleast one academic year previously: has
passed B.A./B.Sc./B.Tech./B.Com. examination from this University or from any statutory
University or any other examination recognised as equivalent thereto.
14.Persian Munshi Fazi/Adib Fazil/Certificate Course in Persian with 50% marks after passing B.A.
examination.
15.Journalism & B.A. with 50% marks or B.A. with 45% marks
Mass Communi- with Diploma in Advertising and Visual Publicity
cation Diploma in Public Relation and Advertising
16.Punjabi/Hindi/ B.A. examination with Gyani/Prabhakar/Shastri/
Sanskrit/Urdu Adib Fazil respectively with 50% marks.
Provided that a candidate offering an allied language subject e.g..Sanskrit, Hindi and Urdu at
the degree stage shall be allowed admission in M.A. course allied to the respective language.
17.Political Science B.A. with Political Science as one of the subject.
18. Urdu B.A. with Urdu/Persian/Munshi Fazil/Adib Fazill Dip. in Urdu/Persian after B.A.
19.Sanskrit Any Graduate with 45% marks in aggregate with Sanskrit as a subject.

(C) has been admitted to the examination as a private candidate under the Statutes relating to Private
candidates.
12. (i) The Part-II examination shall be open to any person who has passed M.A. Part-I examination in full
or is to reappear in one paper from this University.
OR
*has passed M.A. Part-I examination in the subject offered from the Punjab/Guru Nanak Dev
University, provided that he has offered the same papers in Part-I as are available in this University;
and
(ii) A candidate who has passed Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication Part-I/PG Diploma
in Journalism and Mass Communication examination from this University may be admitted to M.A.
Journalism and Mass Communication Part-II examination.
13. For candidate joining the Post-Graduate Studies as a regular student of Department of
Correspondence Courses :
The following shall be the subjects out of which a candidate can offer one :
Punjabi, English, Hindi, Religious Studies, Political Science, History, Economics, Sikh Studies and
Women Studies.
(a) Eligibility (for M.A. Part-I) :
who has passed Bachelor Degree examination in any
faculty from this University or any other statutory university in India or abroad.
 * In the case of candidates who have passed Part-l examination trom the Panjab, Guru Nanak Dev University, the marks
obtained by them in Part-I examination shall be counted towards the division of successful candidate of Part-II examination
of this University by increasing or reducing the marks obtained.

OR
who has passed three years course of Modem Office Practice and also has passed Punjabi
Compulsory subject in B.A. 1,11, III can get admission in M.A. Part-I, provided that the candidate
has not passed M.A. examination in the same subject from this or any other statutory university.

(b) Eligibility (for M.A. Part-II) :

(i) The Part-II examination shall be open to any person who has passed M.A. Part-I examination
in full or is to reappear in one paper from this University.
OR
*has passed M.A. Part-I examination in the subject offered from the Punjab/Guru Nanak Dev
University, provided that he has offered the same papers in Part-I as are available in this
University.
(ii) A candidate who has passed Bachelor of Journalism and Mass Communication Part-I/PG
Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication examination from this University may be
admitted to M.A. Journalism and Mass Communication Part-II examination.
(iii) Those students. who have passed M.A. Part-I under semester system but due to special
circumstances are not able to continue their studies under semester system are allowed to seek
admission to M.A. Part-II in the same subject in the Department of Correspondence Courses.
Their marks in the degree will be of semester system in the 1st year and their marks, in the 2nd
year will be of annual system. As such their degree will be different from both the systems.
The concerned students will be required to pass the deficient paper(s) if required.
The candidate must satisfy the following requirements (for both M.A. Part-I & II courses):
(a) Number of response sheets required to be submitted by the candidates shall be '10' in M.A.
(Punjabi) and '8' in other subjects. The candidate shall have to submit response sheets for all
papers before 31st January of the year.
* In the case of candidates who have passed Part-I examination from the Panjab, Guru Nanak Dev University, the
marks obtained by them in Part-I examination shall be counted towards the division of successful candidate of Part-II
examination of this University by increasing or reducing the marks obtained.

(b) For every course there will be two personal contact programmes of 8-10 days duration.
(c) It will be compulsory for every student to attend at least 75% lectures of the two programmes
taken together. Those students who are unable to complete these lectures will not be eligible to
sit in the annual examination.
(d) Foreign Students will be exempted from the P.C.P.
(e) In very difficult and specific circumstances a candidate may be exempted by the Vice-
Chancellor ftom attending P.C.P. provided the candidate presents two term papers in respect of
each paper.
Note : A candidate admitted to M.A. Part-I in the Deparment of Correspondence Courses (DCC), shall
have to appear in M.A./Part-II through the Department of Correspondence Courses only. Other
conditions shall remain the same.

14. IMPROVEMENT OF DIVISION/SCORE

A candidate, who has passed M.A. examination from this University may be allowed to reappear as a
private candidate for improving division/score. For this purpose he will be given two chances within a
period of two years, from the date of passing the M.A. examination. Improvement shall not be allowed in
more than 50% of the total theory papers offered in Part-I and Part-II examination. Improvement will not
be allowed in Dissertation/viva-voce/practical, for which previous marks shall be carried forward where
the same forms a part of the paper in which he appears for improvement.
For the purpose of improvement, under the above ordinance, a candidate may appear in both Part-I and
Part-II examination, simultaneously or separately but he must complete the examination within the
prescribed period. Such a candidate shall have to submit separate admission form and fee for each part
and shall be allowed to appear in annual examination.
The result of such a candidate shall be declared only if he improves his division/score, otherwise his
result will be declared P.R.S. (Previous Result Stands).
Upto 1% of the total marks of Part-I and Part-II
examination shall be given to such candidates for awarding higher division/55% marks; provided that the total
number of grace marks given for passing the examination and improvement shall not exceed the maximum
prescribed limit.

Note : Out of Papers taken up. the candidate. will be given benefit of increase in marks. where the marks have increased in
Paper/Papers.
