REMOVAL

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative (-)battery terminal.


2. Remove the high-tension leads from the cylinder head cover.

3. Remove the spark plugs.


4. Loosen the cylinder head cover bolts and remove the cylinder head cover.

5. Follow the instructions under Timing Belt Removal and align the camshaft and
crankshaft timing marks.
6. Remove the timing belt (refer to Timing Belt Removal).
7. Remove the distributor.
8. Hold the camshaft on the cast hexagon with an open-end wrench.
9. Loosen and remove the camshaft pulley lock bolts and remove the camshaft
pulleys.

The exhaust valve camshaft is notched to acept the didstributor, however,


mark the camshaft pulleys to ensure reinstallation to the correct camshaft.

10. Loosen the camshaft bearing cap bolts in five or six steps in the order shown in
the illustration.

11. Remove the camshafts.


12. Mark the HLA's to identify their orginal position if they will be reused.

The Hydraulic Lash Adjusters (HLA) must be installed in the location from in
which they were removed. Failure to installthe HLA's in their original location
will result in premature and uneven wear of the HLA's and the camshaft.
13. Remove the HLA's from the cylinder head.
14. Store the HLA's upside down in an oil-filled container.

INSTALLATION
1. Apply a coat clean engine oil to the friction surfaces of the HLA.

2. Install the HLA into the cylinder head bore.

If the HLA being reused, install it in its original position.

3. Check that the HLA moves smoothly in its bore.


4. Apply clean engine oil to the camshaft and the camshaft bearing surface and
install the camshafts into the cylinder head.

the exhaust camshaft is grooved to receive the distributor.

5. Apply silicone sealant to the areas next to the front camshaft bearing caps and
the distributor mountig cap.
6. Install the camshaft bearing caps according to the cap number with the distributor
arrows pointing forward.
7. Install the bolts to the camshaft bearing caps and tighten in five or six steps in the
order shown on the illustration.

Tightening Torque : 100-124.8 in.lb.(11.3-14.2 N·m)

8. Apply a coat of clean engine oil to the lip of the new camshaft seal.
9. Seat the camshaft seal by hand.
10. Using a seal installation tool and a hammer, tap the seal in place until it is flush
with the edge of the camshaft bearing cap.

Protrusion : 0-0.015 in.(0-0.4mm)


Oil seal outer diameter : 1.89 in.(48.0mm)
Oil seal inner diameter (B6 DOHC) : 1.34 in.(34.0mm)
Oil seal inner diameter (BP DOHC) : 1.35 in.(34.2mm)
11. Repeat for the second camshaft.
12. Install the camshafts so that the camshaft dowel pins point straight
up(12o'clock).
13. Install the camshaft pulleys onto the camshafts, alignging the "I" mark with the
intake camshaft dowel pin, and the "E" mark with the exhaust camshaft dowel
pin.

14. Install the camshaft pulley lock bolts.

Tightening Torque : 37-44ft.lb(50-60N·m)

15. Turn the camshafts so that the "E" mark on the intake camshaft pulley is aligned
with the "E"mark on the seal plate and the "I" mark on the seal plate and the "I"
mark on the exhaust camshaft pulley is aligned with the "I" mark on the seal
plate.
16. Hold the camshaft with a wrench.
17. Tighten the camshaft pulley lock bolt.

Tightening Torque : 37-44 ft.lb. (50-60 N·m)


18. Follow timing belt installation instructions (refer to Timing Belt Installation)

19. Connect the negative (-)battery cable to the battery.


20. Start the engine and operate until the cooling fans cycle.
21. Check that there is no HLA nosie, and that there are no oil leaks.

INSPECTION
Check the HLA face for wear or damage and replace if necessary.

To prevent damaged the O-ring, do not remove the HLA unless necessary.
Cylinder Head Gasket

• Release the fuel pressure.


• Keep sparks and open flames away from the fuel area.

Position the hose clamp in the original on the hose and the clamp tightly with large
pliers to ensure a good fit.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


2. Drain the engine coolant.
3. Remove in the order shown in the figure, referring to Removal.
4. Install in the reverse order of removal, referring to Installation.
Cylinder head
Disassemble in the order shown in the fugure, referring to Disassemble.
REMOVAL
Hoses

Keep sparks and open flame away from the fuel area.

• Cover the hose with a reg because fuel will spray out when disconnecting.
• Plug the disconnected hoses to avoid fuel leakage.
Disconnect the hoses shown in the figure.
Harnesses

Disconnect the harness connectors shown in the figure.


Cylinder head bolt (4 Valve)
1. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in two or three steps following the order shown in
the figure.
2. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
INSTALLATION
Cylinder head bolt
1. Apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads and seat faces.
2. Install the cylinder head bolts.
3. Tighten the cylinder head bolts in two or three steps in the order shown in the
figure.

Tightening torque : 56-60ft-lb (76-81N-m)

Accelerator cable
1. Install the accelerator cable.
2. Check the accelerator cable deflection.
If the deflection is not correct, adjust by turning nut (A).

Deflection : 0.04-0.12 in (1-3mm)

Steps after installation


1. Fill the radiator with the specified amount and type of engine coolant.
2. Connect the neagative battery cable.
3. Start the engine and check the following :
(1) Engine oil and engine coolant or leakage.
(2) Ignition timing, idle speed.
(3) Operation of emission control system.

4. Recheck the engine coolant leavels.


Cylinder head
Torque specifications
Valve seal
1 4 Valve
. (1) Install the new valve seal onto the valve guide by hand.
(2 After installation, adjust the protusion A to specification.
)

IN : 0.7772-0.795in (19.6-20.2)
EX : 0.713-0.736in (18.1-18.7mm)
2. 2 Valve
(1) Assemble the SST (or equivalent) so that depth L is as specified.
Depth L
IN 0.587-0.598in (14.9-15.2mm)

EX 0.587-0.598in (14.9-15.2mm)

(2) Slide the valve seal onto the valve guide.


(3) Set the SST (or equivalent) against the valve seal.
(4) Tap the valve seal on until the SST (oe equivalent) contacts the cylinder
head.

Valve and valve spring


1. Install the lower spring seat
2. Install the valve.

Install the spring with the closer pitch toward the cylinder head.

3. Install the valve spring and the upper spring seat.

4. Compress the valve spring with the SST (or equivalent), and install the valve
keepers.
5. Remove the SST (or equivalent).
6. Tap the end the valve stem lightly two or three times with a plastic hammer to
verify that the keepers are all fully seated.
Cylinder head gasket
1. Remove all foreign material from the top of the cylinder block.
2. Place the new cylinder head gasket in position.

Cylinder head
1. Install the cylinder head.
2. Apply clean engine oil to the bolt threads and seat faces.
3. Lighten the cylinder head cover bolts in two or three steps in the order shown.
Tightening torque : 56-60ft-lb (76-81N-m)

Camshaft oil seal


1. Apply a thin coat of engine oil to the camshaft oil seal and cylinder head.
2. Tap the camshaft oil seal into the cylinder head with a suitable tool.

The oil seal nust be tapped in until it is flush with the cylinder head.

Oil seal outer diameter : 1.57in (40mm)

Camshaft
1. Apply engine oil to the journals and bearing then insert and mount the camshaft
into position with the thrust plate.
Tightening torque : 69-95in-lb (7.8-11N-m)

Camshaft pulley
1. Install the camshaft pulley onto the dowel pin groove facing straight upward.

Be certain that the dowel pin of the camshaft also faces straight upward.

2. Tighten the camshaft pulley bolt. Hold the camshaft using a suitable wrench on
the cast hexagon as shown.
Tightening torque : 36-45ft-lb (49-61N-m)

Hydraulic lash adjuster (HLA)


1. Pour engine oil into the oil reservoir in the rocker arm.
2. Apply engineoil to the new HLA.
3. Install the HLA in the rocker arm.

Be careful no to damage the O-ring when installing.

Rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly


1 2 Valve
. (1) Assemble the rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly as shown in the figure.
• Be sure both rocker arm shaft oil holes face downward.
• The installation holes are different for the exhaust and intake sides as
shown in the figure.

There are two types of rocker arms with different offsets.

One type for No. 1 and No. 3 cylinder exhaust and intake and the other
type for cylinders No. 3 and No. 4.

(2 Install the rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly.


)
The bolts must be tightened gradually and in the order shown.

Tighten torque : 16-21ft-lb (22-28N-m)

2 4 Valve
. (1) Assemble the rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly as shown in the figure.
• Face the rocker shaft identification mark upward.
• The installation bolt holes are different for the exhaust and instake
sides.

(2) Install the rocker arm and rocker shaft assembly.

The bolts must be tightened gradually and in the order shown.


(3 Tighten the rocker arm bolts in two or three steps following the order shown
) in the figure.

Tightening torque : 16-20ft-lb (22-28N-m)

Bracket and heat gauge unit


1. Install the engine coolant temperature sender into the cylinder head with seal
tape on the threads.

Tightening torque : 57-82in-lb (6.4-9.3N-m)

2. Install the bracket.

Tightening torque : 14-18ft-lb (19-25N-m)

Thermostat and thermostat cover


1. Remove all foreign meterial from the thermostat cover mounting surface.
2. Install the thermostat with the jiggle pin facing upward.
3. Install a new gasket and the thermostat cover.

Tightening torque : 14-18ft-lb (19-25N-m)

The printed side of the gasket must face the thermostat.

Cylinder head cover


1. Install the cylinder head cover

Tightening torque : 44-78in-lb (5.0-8.8N-m)


If the cover gasket is reused, apply sealant in the groove as shown.

DISASSEMBLY
Rocker arm rocker shaft assembly
1. Loosen the rocker arm bolts in two ir three steps in the order shown in the figure.
2. Remove the rocker arm and shaft assembly.
3. Code all rocker arms and springs so that they cam be installed in the same
places from which they were removed.

Hydraulic lash adjuster(HLA)


1. Remove the HLA by hand.
If it is difficult, remove the HLA by using pliers.
Do not remove the HLA unless necessary because oil leakage will occur if the
O-ring is damaged.

Camshaft pulley
1. Hold the camshaft using a suitable wrench on the cast hexagon.
2. Remove the camshaft pulley lock bolt.
3. Remove the camshaft pulley.

Cylinder head bolt


1. Loosen the cylinder head bolts in two or there steps following the order shown in
the figure.
2. Remove the cylinder head bolts.
Valve keeper
1. Set the SST(or equivalent) against the upper valve spring as shown in the figure.
2. Remove the valve keepers.
Valve seal
1. Remove the valve seal with the SST (or equivalent).

INSPECTION
1. Inspect the cylinder head for damage, cracks and leakage of water and oil.
Replace the cylinder head if necessary.
2. Measure the cylinder head distortion in the six directions shown in the figure.

Distortion : 0.006 in (0.15mm) maximum.


Before grinding the cylinder head, check the following and repair or replace
the cylinder head as necessary. Sinking of valve seats.

Damage of manifold contact suface

Camshaft oil clearance and end play

3. If the cylinder head distortion exceeds specification, grind the cylinder head
surface.
If the cylinder head height is not within specification, replace it.
Height : 1.228-4.236in (107.4-107.6mm)
Grinding : 0.008in (0.20mm) maximum

4. Measure the manifold contact surface distortion in the six direction shown in the
fugure.

Distortion : 0.006in (0.15mm) maximum


5. If distortion exceeds specification, grind the surface or replace the cylinder head.

REMOVAL
1. Remove the steering column cover, the steering wheel and the instrument cluster
bezel.

2. Remove the screws from the lower portion of the combination switch.

3. Remove the combination switch.


4. Remove the instrument cluster installation screws.
5. Pull instrument cluster forward to remove electrical connectors and speedometer
cable and then remove cluster.
6. Remove the installation bolts on underside of steering column and drop steering
column.

7. Disconnect and remove heater and A/C control assembly.

8. Disconnect and remove radio and cigarette lighter.


9. Remove defroster grille and then remove screw in center of I/P.

10. Remove lower I/P panel bolts.

11. Removal of instrument panel.


(1) Disconnect the electrical connectors between center instrument panel
and dash harness.
(2) Remove the instrument panel installation bolts.
(3) Remove the instrument panel.
INSTALLATION
1. Set the instrument panel in its regular position, and reconnect
the electrical connectors.
2 Install the bolts and nuts shown in the figure, and tighten to the
. regulation torque.

Tightening torque:
3.1-4.7 ft·lb (4.2-6.4 N·m)
6.5-9.4 ft·lb (8.8-12.8 N·m)
6.5-9.4 ft·lb (8.8-12.8 N·m)

3. Install in the reverse order of removal.


COMPONENTS

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.


2. Remove in the numbered order shown in the figure.
3. Installation in the reverse order of removal.
