Freshmen Committee 2011-2012

Vision
A committee that has the utmost dedication and determination to guide and form the
freshman students to a true iskolar ng bayan by being equipped with the basic know-how’s
as they adjust from the high school lifestyle and into university life, and with the proper
knowledge and orientation of the roles of an Iskolar ng Bayan in the society and their
integral role in nation-building.
Mission
It is the duty of the committee to facilitate proper provisions through involvement of
prominent persons and groups (e.g. faculty and student organizations), intended to
proactively engage the freshmen in their adjustment to their university life. The
fundamental goal of the committee is to ensure the formation of a true iskolar ng bayan.
Rationale
Regarded as the premiere university in the country, the University of the Philippines is
undoubtedly the melting pot of bright minds. Students from all over the country gather here
bringing their thoughts that it is here where they can acquire the best possible education in
the nation. Given this, the pool of students that will be entering the university as freshmen
is indeed diverse. No one could expect whether these students are prepared in the
transition that they have to go through, since some of them may came from schools where
everything is provided already for them, or maybe some came from other regions in the
country causing anxiety to the students that it will be very difficult to adjust because of the
new culture they will be into. Yet, there are also students who might have an easy
transition because of the presence of their network of friends and acquaintances staying in
the university.
Nevertheless, despite the variety of the situation that may be present among the incoming
freshmen, the University Student Council is responsible to effectively ensure that the
students are well-supported in terms of their integration into the UP community. It is the
liability of the council to introduce to them how things go about inside the university, both in
academics and non-academics. Aside from this, the council is also tasked to develop a
sense of responsibility among the freshmen as Iskolar ng Bayan.
The events in the past years had been difficult in gathering efforts for the different activities
proposed by the committee resulting to the lack of connection to the freshmen. It is
therefore an imperative for the University Student Council to build the Freshman
Committee taking into account the inadequacies of the previous committees, and leaning
nowhere aside from its goal that is to integrate and to reach the widest number of
freshman students.
