Energy in Cities: ‘What Does The Future Hold?’

Energy is essential to every aspect of our economic and social well-being. Today, the world faces two big
challenges: climate change and the security of energy supplies. Cities and regions have both a responsibility
10 October 2007 to reduce their carbon emissions and the opportunity to take advantage of new energy-efficient systems and
renewable energy. At this HORIZON Seminar, leading experts will describe their ground-breaking research
in energy use in built environments, clean and efficient urban transport and renewable energy generation in
cities. Please note that this event will be held at
Buckingham House, New Hall, Cambridge.

Live Long and Prosper? Ageing in the 21st Century’

The last 150 years' improvements in health and sanitation are increasing people's longevity in the developed
world. In Europe, people over 80 now represent the fastest-growing age demographic. In coming years,
medicine will move into our cells, and technologies will assist us to live independently for longer. Will the
4 December 2007
‘population pyramid’ become a skyscraper? What effects will an age boom have on the individual, family,
society and economies worldwide? Is the ‘demographic time bomb’ in fact an opportunity? Hear the opinion
of academics and thought leaders from Cambridge and beyond at this HORIZON Seminar, taking place at
the Centre for Mathematical Sciences.

The Thinking Machine?

We may not realise it but complex intelligent systems already play a central role in our everyday lives. As
we continue to make significant advances in technology, these systems are becoming increasingly
prevalent, but most are still dependent on human decision-makers to manage their operations. But in the
18 March 2008
future, is there a possibility that a machine could actually think?
The HORIZON Seminar: The Thinking Machine, taking place at Emmanuel College, will explore cross-
disciplinary research currently taking place in cognisance and cognitive systems and will showcase the
latest innovative technologies being developed by renowned University of Cambridge academics.
