CHORDIAL RELATIONS
Highlighting musical exchange and collaboration between Indian
and non-Indian systems and genres of music, Chordial Relations
features two distinctive but varied performances. The first, by
Assamese singer Papon (Angraag Mahanta) and The East India
Company, is illustrative of the contemporary Indian trend of fusing
folk music with electronic music and popular Western orches-
tration. The second performance features a musical exchange
between sitar player Niladri Kumar and flamenco guitarist Juan
Diego accompanied by Satyajit Talwalkar on the tabla and percus-
sionist Israel “Katumba” Mera.

NEH BOLIYAAN:
Love Songs From India
Love, in its many splendoured forms has been the inspiration for
music and poetry across the world. Neh Boliyaan explores the
poetic forms known as ghazal and nazm originally associated with
Urdu and Persian literature, but which have also found favor with
poets writing in Hindi, Dakkani, Marathi, Gujarati and other Indian
languages. Ghazal and nazm have also been musically interpreted
prolifically by some of the most eminent singers and composers
of the country. Hariharan and Suresh Wadkar, both acclaimed
singers of these forms provide a unique presentation of ghazal
and nazm in Urdu and Marathi respectively.

What are the avenues for presenting Indian music overseas? What
are the reasons for projecting some musical forms as against the
plurality of Indian music? What are the practical problems associ-
ated with presenting Indian music overseas? These are only some
of the questions that will come up for discussion in this seminar
at Baajaa Gaajaa 2011.

All of these changes appear to augur well for the performing ar ts.
However, several questions remain unanswered. Is the current
extent of patronage as substantial as it ought to be? Does the
manner of patronage deter the scope of the ar ts? Is there a need
for a more informed patronage? Can there be an open interaction
between the patrons and the practitioners in order to understand
their respective points of view? What is the role of event manag-
ers, which has sprung up as an intermediar y between the corpo-
rate sector and the practitioners?

Myth and memory, folk and copyright, home and migration are the
larger narratives emerging from the journey of a song from the
margins into the urban mainstream. Travelling across remembered
lands and forgotten histories following the unseen path of migra-
tion that music takes, You Don’t Belong asks some impor tant
questions about the encounter between ar t and mass production,
creation and ownership in a countr y rich with myriad folk
and oral traditions.

SABAD NIRANTAR:
WORD WITHIN THE WORD
Dir: Rajula Shah
The “wretched of the earth” hold fast the spirit of Bhakti, the
Word resonating in and with their lives. As they sing the poetr y of
Kabir and Gorakhnath they embody, far beyond the scope of any
intellectual resolve, a refusal to die, a bid to seize eternity from
historic annihilation.

RETURN TO GORÉE
Dir: Pierre-Yves Borgeaud
From Atlanta to New Orleans, from New York to Dakar through Lux-
emburg, the songs are transformed, immersed in jazz and gospel.
But the day of their return to Africa is fast approaching and much
remains to be done to be ready for the final concer t..

Musical instruments in India have been categorized since ancient

An Underscore Records initiative, Sangeet Kosh is a unique project that aims at
compiling a wikipedia for Indian music. The first phase of the Sangeet Kosh project
focuses on the creation and compilation of an online directory for Indian music.
The directory will provide basic contact information for musicians across different
genres of Indian music, organizations, event managers, instrument makers, instru-
ment dealers, publishers, record labels and other individuals and organizations
connected with Indian music. Free access to the directory is provided for all who
wish to use this resource.
