A Romanian standard does not necessarily include all the necessary provisions for
contracting. The users of the standard are responsible for its correct application.

It is important that the users of the Romanian standards should make sure they own
the last version with all the modifications of that particular standard.

The information regarding the Romanian standards (date of stating its application,
modifications, confirmations, etc.) are published in the “Standardizarea” magazine.

Preamble
Standard STAS 1712/1, edition 1991, replaces STAS 1712/1 70.

By revision, the following modifications and supplements have been added:

- definition of the graded material was given and the screens to be used in
order to obtain the graded material were also specified;

- the prescriptions regarding the quality control rules have been reconsidered;

- the prescriptions regarding delivery, transport and storage have been

updated.

The first edition of the standard was elaborated in 1950 and was revised in 1960 and
1970.

1. GENERAL MATTERS

1.1 Object and Field of Application

The present standard refers to quartz sand and gravel used as filtrating material for
water filtration installations or for sanding prevention at the drilled wells, dug wells,
drainage systems and springs.

2.2 Quartz sand and gravel are sorted according to Table 2 and must have the
coefficient of irregularity Un 1,5…2,0.

NOTE: The graded material refers to the granules that, when passed through the
screens, remain between two screens of the types mentioned in Table 3. The graded
material is noted by conventional notations corresponding to the screen on which the
granules remain integrally dmin, separated through a line from the screen through
which the granules pass integrally dmax.

2.3 The exceptions admitted for graded material are:

- the mass of the granules passing through the inferior screen (dmin) shall not
be higher than 10% of the graded material mass.
- The mass of the granules remaining on the superior screen (dmax) shall not be
higher than 10% of the graded material mass.
- The maximum size of the granules remaining on the superior screen shall not
be higher than 1,5 dmax.

3. QUALITY CONTROL RULES

3.1 Quality control of the exploited source

The quality of the source shall be verified before organizing its exploitation and
whenever the nature or quality of the layer changes.
The tests shall be performed on a representative medium sample, obtained
according to STAS 1667-76.
The following aspects shall be verified:
- compliance with the conditions in Table1;
- the graded materials.
The silicon dioxide shall be verified every trimester.
3.2 Quality control of the delivered products
The quality of the delivered products shall be verified on lots of maximum 100 m³, of
the same product and graded material.
The tests shall be performed on a representative medium sample, obtained
according to STAS 1667-76.
For each sample, the following aspects shall be verified:

4/5
a verification of compliance with the conditions mentioned in Table 1, except the
silicon dioxide content;
- three verifications of the graded material.
NOTE – For quantities smaller than 50 m³ a single verification of the graded material
shall be performed.

4. VERIFICATION METHODS

4.1 Origin, aspect, shape and colour of the granules, as well as the alien objects
content shall be visually verified.
4.2 The holes volume and the size of the granules of each type of graded
material shall be verified according to STAS 4606-80.
4.3 The coefficient of irregularity Un shall be determined according to STAS 662-
89.
4.4 The silicon dioxide content shall be verified according to STAS 1712/2-70.
4.5 The organic substances contents shall be verified according to STAS 1712/3-
70.
4.6 The graded material shall be verified using the screens according to STAS
1077-67 and STAS 1078-73.

5. STORAGE, DELIVERY, TRANSPORT AND DOCUMENTS

5.1 Quartz sand and gravel shall be stored on clean platforms, separated by
grades, in conditions that permit quality maintenance.
5.2 The delivery of the products shall be done in bulk; if the parties agree, I shall
be done in sacs.
5.3 The transport shall be performed with appropriate means, in order to maintain
the quality of the product.
5.4 When unloading the products, the graded materials shall not mix, and the
quality conditions shall be maintained.
5.5 Each delivery lot shall be accompanied by the quality certificate, prepared in
accordance with the legal provisions in force.
5.6 Each transport shall accompanied by a shipment certificate, which shall
include:
- number and date of issuance of the shipment certificate;
- STAS 1712/1-91.
