Part 1: Martin Luther King Website Assessment

Content Area and Grade Level/Intended Audience: Uninformed people

Website URL: http://www.martinlutherking.org/

Website Description: We would describe this as a way that makes it seems like it
is the truth. It looks like it reflects what the press is saying, but adds its own
information.

Bias: Who published this web site? Is there evidence of bias? How did you verify
the accuracy of the contents of this web page?
Stormfront published this web site and the leader of Stormfront is Don Black. Yes, there
is evidence of bias because everything they are saying is bashing MLK and they are
trying to ruin his reputation.

Author: Who is the author? What credentials does the author have?
It doesn’t give the author, but when I looked up Stormfront, I was able to find a guy
named Don Black who is the founder of the group. His credentials include being a
leading member of the KKK and the American Nazi Party.

When and where: When was the page created and/or when was the information
on the website last updated? This information was last updated on January 15, 2010.
However, this page does not supply ownership.

Accuracy: Is information contained on this website supported by information on

other reputable websites? What other websites did you compare with this one to
check for accuracy? You must compare information on this website to at least
one other reputable website (give name of site and URL).
In order to find out if other websites contained the same information as this one, I
googled Martin Luther King. I did not find any other websites that contained the same
information. I compared it to MLK online. It did not have any of the same information as
the other one. The only things that were similar were the dates and times of his

speeches given and when he died. This website did not discredit him like the other one.
http://www.mlkonline.net/

Readability: What is the readability level of the web page according to MS Word?
Passive Sentences were 25%. Flesch Reading Ease is 55.6. Flesch-Kincaid
Grade Level is 12.2. Flesch reading ease scores mean the higher the score, the
easier it is to read. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level translates the score to a
grade level.

Educational Value: Why was this page put on the web? To inform? Persuade?
Sell? Satire or parody? Deceive/misinform? Would you use this web page with K-
12 students? Why or why not?
I believe this page was put on the web to try and inform people who really did
not know much about MLK and get them to think he was not as honorable as
what everyone thinks. I think it is also trying to persuade people who already
know about him and get them to see him in a different way. I would use this
web page probably with older kids so that they distinguish if the information if
false or not. I think younger kids probably would be fooled by the website
because it doesn’t exactly tell you right away what information they are
submitting about MLK.

Part 2: Educational Website Assessment

Website 1: Name of website: Colonial Kids

Content Area and Grade Level/Intended Audience: The content is based on the
colonial era. It is based upon the history and government of the United States
during the Revolutionary War. The website lists the intended audience as all
ages but intended to be for ages 19 and under.

Website URL: http://library.thinkquest.org/J002611F/

Website Description: “Colonial Kids is an exploration of colonial times in

Southeastern Pennsylvania. Life as a colonist is uniquely presented through the
eyes of children who lived during this period of American history. Their daily
routines, schooling, home life, and recreation are brought to life with stories and
facts as told by the children who would have experienced them. A recipe book,
craft collection, and games all are included in this site to provide the viewer with
fun activities that teach about the time period in a hands on manner. There is
also a section that explains potential jobs that the kids might one day grow up to
hold. A gallery of tools used by a colonial woodworker allows the viewer to
choose a photograph of a tool, and select it to learn more. Video clips throughout
the site help visitors learn about things such as the clothes that were worn in the

time period, as well as the ways in which people traveled throughout the region.
Overall the site provides viewers with a comprehensive picture of the life of a
Colonial Kid.”

Bias: Who published this web site? Is there evidence of bias? How did you verify
the accuracy of the contents of this web page? The website was published by the
Oracle ThinkQuest Education Foundation. Through this foundation, students are
in a competition to create an informational website. ThinkQuest is a library that
offers thousands of websites that are created by students. This could lead to a
bias, considering the knowledge depth of the student and their lack of exposure
to have a fair judgement on what they are writing about. I found out this
information by clicking on the ThinkQuest logo, which directed me to their
websites where there are explanations on who they are and what they do.

Author: Who is the author? What credentials does the author have? The authors
are children, ranging from elementary school to high school and from many
different countries.

When and where: When was the page created and/or when was the information
on the website last updated? The information on the website was last updated
on Thursday, September 23, 2010 8:33:10 AM.

Accuracy: Is information contained on this website supported by information on

other reputable websites? What other websites did you compare with this one to
check for accuracy? You must compare information on this website to at least
one other reputable website (give name of site and URL). Information on this
website is supported by books, encyclopedias, and internet websites. On the
home page of this website, there is a link at the bottom that says “Citations” and
it takes you to all of the sources used. Because the information on this site is so
general and lacks details, it is valid when compared to another website. The
children are writing about basic facts.

Website 2: Name of website Nasa Education

between the grades k-4.

Website URL: http://www.nasa.gov/audience/forstudents/k-4/index.html

Website Description: This is a fun and interactive web page for kids to play and
learn about nasa and space. It has all kinds of fun games they can play and
different facts they can learn about our solar system.

Bias: Who published this web site? Is there evidence of bias? How did you verify
the accuracy of the contents of this web page? Nasa published this website. I
do not see any evidence of bias. I verified the accuracy of the contents of this
web page by playing around on the website and looking at what the kids would
see.

Author: Who is the author? What credentials does the author have?
The page does not give the author but it gives the page editor who is Shelley
Canright. It also gives a Nasa Offical who is Brian Dunbar. I found information
out about Shelley Canright on Nasa’s website. She oversees projects that
support our nation’s elementary and secondary schools.

When and where: When was the page created and/or when was the information
on the website last updated?
The page was last updated on February 9, 2011.

Accuracy: Is information contained on this website supported by information on

other reputable websites? What other websites did you compare with this one to
check for accuracy? You must compare information on this website to at least

Educational Value: Why was this page put on the web? To inform? Persuade?
Sell? Satire or parody? Deceive or misinform? Would you use this web page with
K-12 students? Why or why not?
This page was put on the web to inform kids about space and our solar system. I
would definitely use this website with younger kids because it is interactive and
fun. It teaches them all the different aspects of space in kid friendly language.
It also has fun learning games that help them discover space.
