Monze Boarding High School

Monze Boarding High School is found in Monze town. However, to

understand the Geographical location of Monze, one needs to understand
the political divisions of Zambia. Zambia is divided into nine Provinces,
namely, Northern Province, Eastern Province, Luapula Province, Western
Province, North Western Province, Copperbelt Province, Lusaka Province,
Central Province and Southern Province.

Monze town is found in one of the eleven districts of Southern Province

(Monze district). It is in a town where Monze Boarding High School is
located. The school is a Peri-Urban Government school. It is one and half
kilometers west of the Central Business District. It is the biggest
Government high school in Monze. The other three high schools in this
town are run by different missionaries.

ACADEMIC STAFF: Monze Boarding High School has a total of 49

teachers; 33 Males and 16 Females. All of them are Zambians in the
expedition of two volunteers from Japan and Nigeria respectively.

ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF: The school has 19 members of the

administrative staff,
6 Cooks
1 Typist
1 Registry Clerk
1 Office Orderly
2 Sanitary Orderlies
1 Driver
1 Electrician
4 Watchmen
1 Station hand man
1 Water attendant

ACCOMMODATION: There are 29 teachers' houses and 18 for Auxiliary

staff. All these houses are within the school premises. Teachers that are
not accommodated within the school, rent houses in town and a few have
their own houses around Monze.

SCHOOL ENROLMENT: The school has a total of 912 pupils; 864 boys
and 48 girls. Out of these, 826 are in Boarding and 85 are Day Scholars.
The pupils' ages range between 14 and 21 years. Most of these pupils
come from the surrounding villages of Monze town. The girls are very few
because there are no boarding facilities for them at the moment. The
number is likely to increase if we finish the construction of their dormitory.

NUMBER OF CLASSES: The School has 24 classes

2 Grade 9
8 Grade 10
8 Grade 11
6 Grade 12
However, this is the last time the school will have junior classes. Next
year, we shall have 24 of senior classes only.

DEPARTMENTS: There are 6 departments:

1 DEPARTMENT OF LITERATURE AND LANGUAGES: Offering English
Language and Literature in English and in chitonga.
2 DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS: Offering Ordinary Mathematics.
3 DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES: Offering Geography, History, Civics
and Religious Education.
4 DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL SCIENCES: Offering Biology, Chemistry,
Physics, Science.
5 DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS STUDIES: Offering Office Practice, Book
keeping, Commerce and Principles of Accounts.
6 DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ARTS: Offering Wood Work and Technical
Drawing.
PUPILS DIET: Those in Boarding, eat Nshima with Beans every day for
seven days of the week except for two meals when they would have
Nshima with beef sausages. This is for Lunch and supper. For breakfast,
they have samp with sugar but twice in a week, milk is added to their
samp. Samp is polished maize. It is boiled then sugar is added. There is no
day when they have tea because bread is expensive especially when you
are feeding a large group of people.

SCHOOL FEES: GRADE 10 pupils pay K420,000 each while the other
Grades pay K320,000. K320,000 is an equivalent of U$69.

SCHOOL PROJECTS: We are now rehabilitating school class rooms and

we have started the construction of the Girls' dormitry. We have bought
130 chairs from Lusaka. The rehabilitation activities are quite slow
because of the limited funds.
HIV/AIDS: The HIV/AIDS Pandemic has really hit the school. A quarter of
the school pupils are orphans because of the parents that have gone
through this deadly disease. The extended family system is collapsing in
Zambia because the relatives are now failing to intergrate the so many
orphans left by brothers and sisters into their families. Most children have
to fed for themselves. This is the reason why most of them are stopping
school because they are not able to find money to pay for themselves
every term. Teachers have not been spared by this disease. From the time
I joined the school a year ago, 4 teachers have died at the school. Three
have died from the disease and one was killed in a road accident.
If I got some money, I would use it to rehabilitate one of the classrooms
and label it
"REHABILITATED BY KUNGSHOLMENS GYMNASIUM".
