@VladimirS – I assume you solved your credentials issue since this post? I’m having the same issue now, and
I’m a bit stumped. I tried using my own windows domain account, which the msdn docs seem to suggest should
work, but I get the same error. Any ideas?

This is a good tutorial, but I have not seen anything special about it, since the author is just placed the screen shots of
the installation process. I think that it should be much more helpfull if he have explained the steps, why we should
select certain options and why we should not select certain options. The explanation of certain options would have
helped much more in this tutorial.

Thanks

Hi,

I had installed a sql server 2008 on a XP Pro. My problem is when I try to register servers I got this error (Framework
.NET warning):

“Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application.

Key not valid for use in specified state…”

Then if I try to click on the menu Registered Servers I can’t see any kind of tree as in other installations.

I tried to repair Framework and it doesn’t work..

Can you help me? Thank you very much!

I have the same problem as Albert above:

I had installed a sql server 2008 Management Studio + SP1 only on a Win7. My problem is when I try to register
servers I got this error (Framework .NET warning):

“Unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application.

Key not valid for use in specified state…”

Then if I try to click on the menu Registered Servers I can’t see any kind of tree as in other installations.

I tried Repair… didn’t fix it. I tried uninstalling and installing… still can’t register any server.

Do I have to wipe out Win 7 for this? :-)

Thanks!

I seem to remember that when you do a SQL install it creates certain groups in Active Directory (in a domain
environment). However my account does not have permission to create such groups. I am a local admin on the
machine (my domain account is) however. Is this a concern? Exactly what type of permissions are required or
recommended for the SQL Server 2008/2005 installer to be run as?

Thank you

check either sql able to get it in the list of available sql server in same environment.
To do this, open cmd and run
sqlcmd -L
if you want this result in text file then
sqlcmd -L >c:\serverlist.txt

you will get the list of all sql server in your environment. Check if this instance exists here

It is really nice.

But what I think is, it will be better utilised if provided some add info. such as how to saperate .mdf,.ldf,tempdb e.t.c.
during setup or after setup. In particular if we use raid 10.

I will be obliged if provided something neccessary.

Any way many many thanks to Pinal Sir.

Hi Pinal,

I am working with SQL Server 2008 on Win 7 Pro. Installed successfully, but can’t connect to server instance from
SQL Server Mgmt Studio.

I named db as “PHCG” and I see a service running as SQL Server (PHCG).

What should be my Server Name when connecting?

Thanks much in advance,

HI
please use as below

if your server name is server01 then

use as below

server01\PHCG

and use windows or SA authentication for connecting

If you are getting error “the credential you provided for the sql server agent is invalid”

One of the best way of handling this is to install it with a local account first.

Once SQL Server installed, now you can change the service account by changing the user at services.msc

Change the service account, stop & start it. Its now working with your service account.

Thanks.

Hi Pinal,
i am using windows 7 home basic 64 bit os. I’m having a shocking time trying to install SQL Server 2008 on 64-bit
Windows 7. When I run setup.exe, I get the following error message:

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 installation has failed.

SQL Server 2008 Setup requires .NET Framework 3.5 to be installed

Things I’ve tried:

I’ve checked and double checked. I do have .NET Framework 3.5 installed, with SP1
I’ve read about a missing Windows Installer 4.5 installation producing the same error. Win7 comes with Windows
Installer 5, which hopefully satisfies this requirement, as I’ve tried to install 4.5 and it won’t let me
Burning the ISO to DVD and installing from there.
Installing on an XP machine using the same ISO. This works, so the ISO must be fine.
Considering SQL Server 2005, but it really needs to be 2008 for the project.

Update I could install SQL Server Express, and then SP1, but couldn’t upgrade to Enterprise.
If you’ve come across this issue, or know how to fix it, I’d love to know.

Please note i purchased a new system for learning SQL Server but disappointed with Microsoft for making me to
struggle with its compatablity issues and with out any solutions.

Please let me know if you can assist me on this.

First, let me thank you for this great tutorial. It helped me a lot during my feeble attempts to install SQL Server 2008.

I have a quick question. I followed all your instructions and installed all the components (i.e SSAS, SSRS, SSIS, BIS
etc) because I need to study them. When I tried to view my Report Server/Reports in my browser, it prompts me for
username and password. I don’t remember setting one up and I tried all possible username – password combinations I
could think of but to no avail. Could you please tell me which username – password I need to enter so that I could
view my Report Server/Reports?

Thank you for your time and more power! ^_^
