White Eagle Aerospace Short Course

Aerodynamics For Engineers
Target Audience
The Aerodynamics For Engineers (AFE) short course is intended for anyone
seeking instruction in basic aerodynamics principles and flow phenomena.
This knowledge and its application is essential to successful aerospace vehicle
design, analysis, and testing activities. Whether you are a practicing
engineer, technical analyst, test conductor, researcher, or program manager,
AFE will enhance your understanding of and help to improve your
competency in this key discipline. Among those who will greatly benefit from
attending the AFE short course are:

9 aerodynamics engineers 9 aircraft flight crew
9 flight test engineers 9 operations research analysts
9 airframe designers 9 flight controls specialists
9 launch vehicle designers 9 stability and control specialists
9 aircraft systems engineers 9 systems engineers
9 missile systems engineers 9 program managers

Aerodynamics For Engineers
What You Will Learn
The Aerodynamics For Engineers (AFE) short course will provide you with a
comprehensive training experience in fundamental aerodynamics applicable
to flight ranging from subsonic to hypersonic speeds. You will learn how
aerodynamic forces and moments are generated for any flight vehicle at any
speed and any aerodynamic attitude. You will be introduced to the viscous
boundary layer, turbulence, and flow separation and how these phenomena
critically affect airfoil lift and drag characteristics. You will come to
understand the significance of Mach number, Reynolds number, and the
principle of Dynamic Similarity and the part they play in the field of wind
tunnel testing. You will learn the basics of aerodynamic heating and why
thermal effects drive the design of high‐speed flight vehicles such as aircraft,
missiles, and entry vehicles. You will also acquire simple equational tools to
make first‐order, real‐world aero calculations. AFE subject matter includes:

y The Atmosphere y Compressible Flow

y Fluid Properties y Conservation Laws
y Aero Forces and Moments y Mach Number
y Incompressible flow y Shock Waves
y The Boundary Layer y Expansion Waves
y Flow Separation y Airbreathing Propulsion
y Airfoils and Wings y Aerodynamic Heating
y Aerodynamic Lift y Reynolds Number
y Aerodynamic Drag y Planetary Entry
y Wind Tunnels y Aerospace History

Aerodynamics For Engineers
Aviation History
Much has transpired during the 100‐plus years of powered flight. We are
both the beneficiaries and stewards of the technological progress that
previous generations have bequeathed to us. However, the truth is that a
great many in today’s aerospace workforce have little knowledge of the key
people, events, and innovations that comprise the history of their own
profession. While we cannot live in the past, we must learn from it if we are
to be successful now and in the future. Further, like our predecessors, we
must protect and preserve this legacy knowledge for succeeding generations.
It is for these reasons that White Eagle Aerospace strongly emphasizes
aerospace history in the technical courses that it offers. This is done through
the mediums of special presentations, videos, and field trips. Aircraft
addressed in the Aerodynamics For Engineers course include:
9 Bell XS‐1
9 Bell X‐1A
9 Bell X‐2
9 D‐558‐II Skyrocket
9 F‐100 Super Sabre
9 F‐102 Delta Dagger
9 F‐104 Starfighter
9 F‐106 Delta Dart
9 B‐58 Hustler
9 North American X‐15
9 XB‐70 Valkyrie
9 SR‐71 Blackbird
