Bono ... and now Renée Hetherington! LOCAL SCIENTIST TO APPEAR
AT "TEDxJuanDeFuca" While the federal election steams ahead in Canada, one
candidate will step away from the campaign trail for a few hours on April 30 to make a
different kind of presentation.
Renée Hetherington will join the ranks of notables such as Bill Clinton, Jane Goodall
and Bono in delivering a TEDxJuanDeFuca presentation on her area of expertise -
modelling human response to climate change over the past 135,000 years.
Hetherington's presentation will focus on identifying the 'common ground' on which
environmental and economic challenges will be transformed into opportunities for
humanity.

The federal Liberal candidate in the riding of Saanich Gulf Islands, Hetherington is a
business woman and internationally respected research scientist who has published
many book chapters and articles in international scientific journals and has been
invited to Norway, Alaska, Hong Kong, Australia, and Morocco to give keynote
presentations on her research. She co-authored a textbook with evolutionary biologist
Robert G. B. Reid called "The Climate Connection" which was published by Cambridge
University Press in 2010.
This work captured the attention of TEDxJuanDeFuca organizers, who conferred
with Hetherington early in 2011 and scheduled her appearance for April 30th.

"When the date was set, we didn't know Canada would be heading into an election,"
says Hetherington "It's been a challenge balancing the development of the talk with
campaigning, but this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to reach out to an influential
audience on a topic of critical importance to the future." TEDxJuanDeFuca is a one
day conference being held on April 30th in Victoria, BC at the Vancouver Island Tech
Park. An exciting line up of entrepreneurs, scientists, and generally fascinating people
will present on the theme of Innovation and Transformation. The aim of the conference
is to foster the sharing of ideas and engagement between a broad cross-section of

1984 as a conference on Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Since then the
