Thankyoufor purchasing
a Canonproduct.
The Canon Speedlite380EX is a Canon EOS-dedicatedautofocuszoom flash unit featuring
the newly-developed E-TTL (Evaluative-Through-The-Lens) auto flash controlsystem.ll also
has two new features:FP (Focal-Plane) flash and FE (FlashExposure)lock. FP flash enables
the Speedliteto synchronizewith all shutterspeeds(high-speedsync) while FE lock locksthe
flash exposurereadingfor a specificarea. These new featuresare availablewhen Speedlite
380EXis coupledto a Type-Acamera(see below).

CanonSpeedlite
380EXFeatures
1 E-TTLauto flash control
When Speedlite380EX is used with a Type-A camera, E-TTL auto llash controltakes
over. Unlike the A-TTL and TTL aulo flash systems which use a multiple-zoneflash
meteringsensor lo read the flash exposure, the E-TTL auto flash syslem uses normal
evaluativemeteringwith the camera'smeteringsensor and controlsthe tlash exposure
automatically.
The E-TTLauto flash syslemlherebycontrolsthe flashexposurewith higherprecisionand
booststhe performanceof the AIM (AdvancedIntegratedMulti-point)system(whichlinks
the meteringand flash exposureto the focusingpoint).
The E-TTL auto flash system conlrolsthe exposureof the main subjectas well as the
backgroundfor a balancedexposure.lt combinesaulomaticexposurecontrolfor ambient
lightand flash exposurecontrolfor both till flash and low-lightconditions.

2 FP flash(high-speed
sync)
When Speedlite380EX is used with a Type-A camera,it can synchronizewith all shutter

FP flash is effective when you want to use fill flash for an ouldoor portrait while creating
backgroundblur with a large aperture.Or, when you want to producea catchlightin the
subject'seyes in daylight.

3 FE lock
When Speedlite380EX is used with a Type-A camera, you can lock the correct flash
exposurereadingfor any portionof the picture.

Flashexposureconfirmation
The flash confirmationlamp on the back of the Speedlitelightsfor 2 sec. after the flash
fires if the flash exposurewas sufficient.lt thereforegives you immediatefeedbackon
propertlashexposure.

Autozoom
The flash head zooms automaticallyfor optimum flash coveragefor lens focal lengths
rangingfrom 24mm to 105mm.

Bounceflash
The flash head can tilt upwardup to 90' lo bouncethe flash.

Autopoweroff
lf the Speedlite has been turned on and it is not used for about 90 sec., it turns off
automaticallyto conserve battery power. To turn on the Speedliteagain, press the shutter
buttonor the Speedlite'stest firingbutton.

Cautions
When replacingbatteries, replace all four batteriesat one time.
. Although ordinary, non-alkaline batteries (R6 or UM3) may be used, the
numberof flasheswill be less.
. The contacts of NiCd batteries are not slandardized. lf you want to use NiCd
balteries, make sure the battery contacts touch the battery compartment's
contacts securely.
. When you will not use the Speedlite for an extended period, remove the
batteries.
. In low temperatures, take two sets of fully-charged NiCd batteries and keep
one set warm in a pocket, etc., and use the batteriesalternately.
. Speedlite380EX cannot be used with an external power source.
