New York, NY

Created by Langston Hughes

More Info A few years ago, in 1918, many rural African Americans from
South headed to the industrial North for employment opportuni-
ties.

Among these many new mass congregations in American indus-

trial cities, grew Harlem, New York City, a convergence of African-
Americans from all over the country.

This “Renaissance” in Harlem is our expression of African-Amer-
ican social thought and culture. Instead of using direct political
means, we, as African-American artists, writers, and musicians
employ culture to work for goals of civil rights and equality.

Join us as we share African-American paintings, writings, poetry

and more, as we celebrate our voices in this revolutionary mo-
ment in history.

Attendance is free. See and hear orignial works by Duke Elling-

ton, William H. Johnson, Lois Mailou Jones and W.E.B. Du Bois and
more!
