THE RETURN OF

 Composition-
I arranged the shoes to overlap
each other and to have them be
close up so they would have as
much detail as possible.

Craft- I started by tracing the

furthest objects in the picture. I
traced the two shoes first to get
an idea of how they would look.
I then began to add more and

back shoe first. I originally had
some trouble with the laces but
figured out that if I use multiple
colors I can shade them cor-
rectly so that it looks believable
to the eye. I began to work my
way to the front shoe as I kept
progressing.

After learning how to make
DORM
mix different colors with the
gradient tool, I began to turn
my first ordinary photo into
something more brighter than
it was. I began to edit my work
by going back and finding
certain sections of the picture.
DAZE
For the color of the building I
made a bright yellow but at the
same time dark because of the
direct lighting from the sun-
light. The sky was made with
a mix of white and light blue
because of the clouds and that
were nearby. The snow and
grass were mixed in pretty well
and also were bright because it
was day outside.

blue because it reflected the
sky and the light coming from

MIX IT UP
“COLOR REMIX”
I created this remix by using
the black unlocking all the
layers and using the black
arrowhead tool to select the
layer and change the color. I
displayed these very bright
colors for the shoes. I would
love to have a pair of these
shoes. I used reverse colors on
the shoes to make your eyes
jump from one to the other.
I used a darker color for the
background and implemented
colors from the shoes using the
opacity tool to adjust them.

Concept-
The concept of these drawing are to show the ordinary radio being taken from its element and into a
world of unordinary depicting that 88.3’s radio station is the escape from ordinary radio. In the picture
the radio is dreaming of escaping work and going to paradise where anything but ordinary happens.

Composition
The pictures I have used a familiar real life quality theme of vacation.
The Picture represents an ordinary radio escaping to a fantasy vacations.
One picture begins with an office worker dreaming of getting away to
paradise, which leads to the 2nd picture of the radio reaching paradise.
The radios jump from a plane which knows its location by the hand
carving of 88.3 in the sand. The stereos make their way to the beach for
a relaxing time away from the ordinary world of music. Both pictures
establish the beach theme because it truly represents a world of peace
and party relaxation. The radio climb up to the beach to live their fantasy
of being away from the regular life.

viewers eye across the photo. The eye of the viewer will most
likely start at the brown eye on the left side then move to the blue
eye on the right. The main control of this photo is the dividing

Concept- The concept of this photo is the relationship between

the two people. It makes the viewer have their own options on
what the relationship between the two faces or eyes mean. The
meaning behind it in my eyes is that the brown eye is determined
to get something done while the blue eye is following along, be-
cause you can see how the blue eye is placed a little behind face
of the brown eye.

I created depth by moving the radios to the foreground and background with the black pointer tool. Then a blue
sky and green grass was added. I then placed a picture of a house into the composition and traced over it as I
did with the drawing of the radios. Its was important that I organized all my layers because I wanted to copy
and paste some of the items I designed. To create more houses I selected the layer with the house in it and copy
and pasted more into the background. The text tool was used to put the radio station numbers on the houses and
the rotation tool to make sure they were aligned with the door. The paint brush tool was used to add the flowers
in the flower box and the scratches on the house.

CONCEPT:

COMPOSITION:
In the end though once I added the houses in the back I think it added alot to the creativity of the concept
and overall composition of the peice. The depth from the houses and the distance between the radios gives it
more dimension and visual interest while putting more emphasis and the 88.3 radio that is in the foreground.
I think the veiwers eye is now more drawn to looking at the 88.3 radio because his coloring is different from
the rest of the composition and he appears to be more unique.

 Eye Opening
Craft: I changed a lot of things from the previous version of this
photo. Instead of using the pen tool to make different shapes to
represent the colors, I used the gradient tool. I felt that this would
help make the illustration look more clean and realistic. I also
worked more with the paint brush tool to make the hair, eye-
brows, and eyelashes seem more real as well.

 I tried to put as much deatail to
the color of the objects. I had to
change a lot of the colors of the
shampoos because the color did
not match the actual color of the

Finding the right color was a bit

Shower Escape

 This is where I left off last week
and my finished work. A lot of time
was used to finish the work and
lots of eye pain to get the details I
wanted. The major change is the
gray tray. From the start I was al-
ways unhappy with the way the tray
turn out so after I finish the major
tracing on the main objects I deleted
the old tray and traced the new tray
again. For the tray I had zoom in
almost to the point where the pixel
were all mashed. I also had the
color taken off so the color would
not fill in as I traced. Another
change that is noticeable is the dark
spot on the towel.

I felt the dark spot made the towel look unreal and
unsatisfactory to my taste so I took it out and made
the towel look better. Now this is the first time the
sandals are seen and though the color is not the
original color of the real sandals I felt though that
this color look better and had the correct amount of
shading. After I traced the main components of the
picture the details came into the picture. I decided
to make the first shampoo more true to its real
look. The shampoo white blended in to the wall so
I made the wall a little darker but still white. For
the details in the shampoo’s I had to zoom in until
the pixels were mashed up but still noticeable.
The tracing process was hard because I could not
always get the perfect circle or shape that I wanted
but when I zoomed out it looked good.
Making the flame on the Infusion
shampoo was one of the hardest
details to trace because it was all
connected and kept fluctuated up and
down. My favorite trace was the bar
code because it seemed funny to go
into that much details for a bar code.
On the bar code I just made small
black rectangles inside a big white
rectangle. Tracing the words were
the easiest because basically it was
straight lines most of the times and
easy curves.
Shoot For The Stars
After receiving feedback from my classmates, I started to
make adjustments to my picture. I changed the background
to make it seem more like space, but at the same time not
take away the viewer’s eye from the foreground. Also, I
changed the grays smoke because it was blending in into the
background so I changed it to make it look more like the fire
from the spaceship. To show a realistic escape, I made the
orange radio have little rockets or missiles trying to prevent
the rocket from escaping, but at the same time, 88.3 radio is

For the composition of this
photo I wanted to make the
light slightly dim because I
think it adds to the antiquity
of the doll. So I chose a spot
in my home that is relatively
dim and took multiple test
shots until I got the lighting I
wanted. This is one of my fa-
vorite photographs that I took
for this assignment because
I love the delicate, feminine
lace under the dolls chin and
light skin against those big
dark blue eyes. In my opinion
her bold eyes are a great con-
trast to her delicate features.

For this task, I chose to
photograph the eyes. I wanted
to capture more than just a
regular, human eye. How
boring is that, right? So my
thought was to take it a step
farther and capture eyes of all
different varieties while at the
same time adding some sort of
creative spin to it. I took many
test shots and played around
with lighting, angles and colors
before I decided on a picture
to keep.

 Radio City Rock

This time around, I redid the “buildings.” Instead
of drawing squares and leaving them transparent,
I decided to draw them opaque. I used the rectagle
tool and drew perfect retangles this time for crisp-
ness. All other details were also drawn in via the
retangle tool, the elipse tool, and the line tool. The
lines that formed various speakers on the radios were
aligned with the align tool after a single line was
copied for congruent lengths. The concentric circles
for the speakers were relatively done the same way
by varying sizes and then aligning them horizontally
and verticly. For the most part the speakers made
up of elipses and lines were copied and resized and
recolored to be reused for other radios for the sake of
efficiency. The instruments were drawn in with the
rectangle tool and the line tool. The rocket ship was
resized to be larger. In addtion, it had the radio sta-
tion’s frequency added on as insignia through the text
tool. Some of the smoke was cropped out and some
of the outlines were removed to compensate for the
larger rocket. The giant speaker was also drawn in
with the pen tool this time. The background gradient
recieved a third color was was altered somewhat.
The concept this time was to draw attraction to the
detail of the skyline as was originally intened and
to make the rocket more noticable. The concept that
represents “the escape from ordinary radio” here is
a rocket ship, representing the escape, blasting off,
leaving the ordinary radios making up a skyline, and
tren traveling to extradordinary radio made up of
giant speakers with soundwaves in space. This takes
two things that are typically known to be ordinary
and extraordinary and illustrates them as radio. The
skyline made up of the old radios is the everyday,
whereas the planet, made up of a giant speaker with
soundwaves, to look like a planet with rings is the
out of this world.

 First Draft

Most shapes and areas were created using only

the pen tool to create a solid, enclosed path.
The colors were added exclusively with the eye
dropper tool from the actual photo. The biggest
difference here is the addition of the glare ef-
fect on the top and side of the foreground shoe.
Those were achieved in a different manner,
with the brush tool. The glare was literally
painted on to avoid a choppy shape that was
resulting with the pen tool. I was trying to
achieve some three-dimensionality with the
glare effect, esspecially on the side of the shoe
where there were a few monments of detail
emphasized by it.

Final Touches

The one thing that I changed was the glare

effect on the top and side of the shoe.
Instead of having it painted on, I opted to
make them shapes with the pen tool, but
then used a gradient. The gradient was set
to a radial gradient because I did not want

to have an area of intense white that was
up against the dark laces and overall color
of the side of the shoe. The gradient was
set to solid, opaque white at the center to
completely transparent at the outside. This
time around, I included it on the laces. Some
problems I faced were that the pen tool cre-
ated really choppy edges again, and I think
that the shoe lost some form because of it.

 Craft: For this image, I simply
worked from the first draft that
I has completed. I used mostly
the pen tool and the paint brush
tool to make the new objects
and revise the original images.
The only other tool I used
was the pencil tool for the hill
the cage is on. The cage itself
was made using the pen tool. I
also made the superman figure
smaller and added the rest of
his body. I used to paint brush
tool to fix the lines in the shirt
and arms.
Concept: The concept of
this image is still to say “the
escape from ordinary radio.”
The radios in the cage that are
all the same are supposed to
symbolize the ordinary radios
that need to escape. The su-
perman carrying the one radio
to safety is meant to symbol-
ize escaping from the cage
because it is the same radio as
those in the cage.

Composition: I put the radios

in a cage so that it would make
more sense and not seem that
they were just floating in the
air. I also made the background
look like an actual sunset
instead of just random colors.
I made the superman smaller
so that the viewer could see
all of him and it would look
more like he was flying. I put
the superman on the left and
the radios on the right because
that is the way people read.
Superman is the first part of
the sentance and the ordinary
radios are the second part.

About The Author

My name is Joe Zahalka, I am a 21 years

old and I attend St Xavier University. I am
a trnsfer student from College of Dupage.
I am a senior and my major is elementary
education with a concentration in physical
education. I also play on the men’s volley-
ball team for the Saint Xavier Cougars. I
chose to take this class because I wanted to
try something new. I wanted to experience
a class that could teach me new things and
show the art side of me.
