297-8804 Eastend Flood Preparation – a Job Very Well Done

Even well-intended weather predictions are at best “educated guesses”. So it's not
surprising that spring time flood predictions, which depend on the weather, are even
less reliable. As of today (April 20), the Frenchman River is expected to peak some-
time next week. But what time the peak will occur and what “peak” actually means
are both in the hands of God. And, not surprisingly, reactions range from “the sky is
falling in” to level headed contemplation and preparation.
Given the large amount of snow still on the fields upstream of Eastend and the seem-
ingly late arrival of spring, comparisons to prior floods are unavoidable. I was not a
resident of Eastend for either the late 90s flood or the flood of 52. But, from what I
gather talking to folks more familiar with those events, the current situation is sig-
eady MLS #392260 nificantly different.
o The comparison in the media and on the street to the 1952 flood is inevitable. In 52,
ove the reservoir dam just upstream from Eastend was breached. However, this is not
1952. Since then, significant changes have been made to the dam. And, VERY im-
n www.realtor.ca pressively, three levels of government have moved quickly to provide funding for a
flood wall along the town side of the Frenchman River. To really appreciate the
speed with which this happened, you need to be a resident of Eastend.
Two weeks ago, residents received a flyer indicating that work would begin on the
Family wall. At that time, the wall was to be 300 metres long, running from the Highway 13
Movies bridge south to the railway track. Today, not only is that stretch complete, but so is a
much longer section north of the bridge. In total, the entire flood wall is roughly a
kilometre long and, in places, several meters high. Countless truck loads of fill were
