THE EPISTLE OF PAUL TO THE

COLOSSIANS
In this Epistle, Saint Paul puts difference between the lively, effectual and true Christ, and the feigned, counter-
feit and imagined Christ, whom the false apostles taught.

And first, he confirms the doctrine which Epaphras had preached, wishing them increase of faith, to esteem the
excellency of God's benefit toward them, teaching them also that salvation, and whatsoever good thing can be
desired, stands only in Christ, whom only we embrace by the Gospel.

But for as much as the false brothers would have mixed the Law with the Gospel, he touches those flatterers vehe-
mently, and exhorts the Colossians to stay only on Christ, without whom all things are but mere vanity.

And as for circumcision, abstinence from meats, external holiness, worshiping of Angels as means whereby to come
to Christ, he utterly condemns (showing what was the office and nature of ceremonies, which by Christ are abrog-
ate), so that now the exercises of the Christians stand in mortification of the flesh, newness of life, with other like
offices appertaining both generally and particularly to all the faithful.

CHAPTER 1

1:1 Paul ["little"], an Apostle [to set apart or send out; a delegate] of Jesus Christ, by the
will [determination; choice; purpose; decree] of God, and Timothy ["dear to God"; valu-
able] our brother,

1:2 To them which are at *Colosse [“colossal”; Colossae, a place in Asia Minor],
*Which was a city of Phrygia.

Saints [sacred (physically pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially consecrated)] and
faithful [trustworthy; believing] brothers in Christ:

Grace [graciousness, of manner or act (especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its re-
flection in the life)] be with you, and peace [(to include prosperity and quietness)] from God
our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

1:3 We give thanks [grateful; express gratitude] to God, even the Father of our Lord
[Gr. kurios: supreme in authority; controller; master] Jesus ["Jehovah-saved"] Christ [to smear or
rub with oil; anointed; the Messiah],

always [lit. "every when"; at all times] praying [supplicating; worshiping] for [with respect
to] you:

1:4 Since we heard [came to the ears; was reported] of your faith [persuasion; credence; moral
conviction (of religious truth, or the truthfulness of God or a religious teacher); reliance] *in
Christ Jesus,

and of your love [Gr. agape: love; affection or benevolence] toward all Saints [sacred (physically
pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially consecrated)],

1:5 For [through] the hope's [confidence; (to anticipate, usually with pleasure); expecta-
tion] sake, which is laid up [reserved; awaits] for you in heaven [(through the idea of eleva-
tion); the sky; by extension heaven (as the abode of God)],

whereof you have heard before [heard already] by [in] the word [Gr. logos: something said
(including the thought); by implication a topic (subject of discourse)] of truth, which is the Gos-
pel [(the announcing of the) good message],

1:6 Which is come [to be near at hand] unto you, even as it is unto [in] all the
world [Gr. kosmos: orderly arrangement; decoration; by implication the world], and is fruitful [to
be fertile (literally or figuratively); bearing or bringing forth fruit], as [even as] it is also
among [in] you [yourselves],

from [since] the day that you heard [came to the ears; was reported] and [also] truly [in
truth] knew [to know upon some mark: recognize; by implication to become fully acquainted with,
to acknowledge] the grace [graciousness (as gratifying), of manner or act; (especially the divine in-
fluence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude)] of God,

1:7 As [just as] you also learned of Epaphras [contracted form of Epaphroditos:(in the sense of)
"devoted to Aphrodite" (Venus)] our dear fellow servant [a co-slave; servitor or ministrant of
the same master],

whom is for [regarding; concerning] you a faithful [trustworthy; true; believing] *minis-
ter [Gr. diakonos: to run on errands; an attendant; (generally) a waiter (at table or in other menial
duties)] of Christ:

1:8 Who has also declared [made plain by words] unto us your love which you
have *by [through] the Spirit.
*Which comes of the holy Ghost.

1:9 For this cause we [ourselves] also, since the day we heard [gave audience; came to our
ears; was reported] of it, cease [stop, restrain, quit, desist, come to an end] not [not at all; nev-
er] to pray [pray to God (earnestly); supplicate, worship] for [regarding; for the sake of] you,

and to desire [ask, beg, call for, crave, desire, require] that [with the purpose or result] you
might be fulfilled [to make replete; (literally) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow)] with know-
ledge [recognition; (by implication) full discernment, acknowledgement] of *his will [a determ-
ination; choice (purpose, decree; volition) or inclination],
*That is, God's.

in all wisdom [Gr. sophia: wisdom (higher or lower, worldly or spiritual)], and spiritual [non-
carnal; ethereal; (divinely) supernatural; regenerate] understanding [ a mental putting together;
intelligence],

1:10 *That you might walk [tread all around; be occupied with; walk at large (especially as
proof of ability)] worthy [appropriately; deservingly; suitably] of the Lord, and please [exciting
the emotion of agreeableness with] him in all things,

*Ephesians 4:1-2 I therefore, being prisoner in the Lord, pray you that you walk worthy of the
vocation whereunto you are called,With all humbleness of mind, and meekness, with long-suffer-
ing, supporting one an ther through love

*Philippians 1:27 Only let your conversation be, as it becomes the Gospel of Christ, that whether
I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your matters that you continue in one Spirit,
and in one mind, fighting together through the faith of the Gospel.

*1 Thessalonians 2:11-12 As you know how that we exhorted you, and comforted, and besought
every one of you (as a father his children) That you would walk worthy of God, who has called
you unto his kingdom and glory.

being *fruitful [fertile; fruit-bearing] in all good [beneficial] works [toil; labor; deeds], and
increasing [growing; enlarging] in the knowledge [recognition; (by implication) full discern-
ment; acknowledgement] of God,

*1 Corinthians 1:5 That in all things you are made rich in him, in all kind of speech, and in all
knowledge:

1:11 Strengthened [enabled; empowered] with all might [Gr. dunamis: force (literally or figur-
atively); specifically miraculous power] through his glorious [very apparent; praiseworthy; hon-
orable] power [great vigor; dominion; strength],

unto *all patience [to stay under; undergo; remain; cheerful or hopeful constancy or endurance],
and long-suffering [long-enduring temper; forbearance; fortitude] with joyfulness [cheerful-
ness; happy; well-off],
*The universal application of the influence of the Christian attitude and practice is represented re-
peatedly by the liberal usage of the word "all": pleasing God in all things; being fruitful in all good
works; strengthened with all might; unto all patience and long-suffering. There is no place in life
where the principles of Christ and the power of God do not apply; therefore (by implication) there
is never a reason for a Christian to give up hope or to remain unfruitful.

1:12 Giving thanks [to be grateful, (actually) to express gratitude (towards); specifically to say
grace at a meal] unto the Father,

who has made us {qualified} [competent (as if coming in season), that is, ample (in amount) or
fit (in character); enabled]

consecrated)] in light [(to shine or make manifest, especially by rays; luminousness],

cued] us from [out of] the power [capacity; mastery; token of control; authority; jurisdiction] of

his blood, that is, the forgiveness [freedom (from); pardon; deliverance] of sins ["missing" the
mark; offenses],

3:2 Set your affections on [exercise the mind; to be (mentally) disposed (more or less earnestly
in a certain direction); intensively to interest oneself in (with concern or obedience)] things

3:3 For you are *dead [slain with (Christ)], and your life [Gr. zoe: "aliveness"] is hidden [con-

God.
*With Christ.

3:4 When Christ, who is our life [Gr. zoe: "aliveness"], shall *appear [be rendered apparent;

*1 John 3:2 Dearly beloved, now are we the sons of God, but yet it is not made mani-

3:5 *Mortify [deaden] therefore [accordingly] your members [limbs; parts of the body]

globe]:
*Extinguish all the strength of the corrupt nature which resists against the Spirit, that you may live in the Spir-

*Romans 6:4-6We are buried then with him by baptism into his death, that like as Christ was
raised up from the dead to the glory of the Father, so we also should walk in newness of life. For if
we be planted with him to the similitude of his death, even so shall we be to the similitude of his
resurrection, Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be
destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

faith, who for the joy that was set before him, endured the cross, and despised the shame, and is set
at the right hand of the throne of God.

*1 Peter 2:1-2Wherefore, laying aside all maliciousness, and all guile, and dissimulation, and
envy, and all evil speaking, As newborn babes desire that sincere milk of the word, that you may

*1 Peter 4:1-2 For as much then as Christ has suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise
with the same mind, which is, that he which has suffered in the flesh, has ceased from sin,That he
hence forward should live (as much time as remains in the flesh) not after the lusts of men, but
after the will of God.
