Lenten Meditation
SHARING WHO WE ARE
AMIDST THE CROWD OF CELEBRATORS AND SKEPTICS

For Jesus and his followers, Palm Sunday was a joyous me of great celebraon. Their mission
was moving toward its objecve. Their message was gaining a hearing. It was me to move into
Jerusalem, to share their good news with others who sought the message of hope and new life.

Many travelers celebrated with them. They cut leaves from nearby palm trees and waved
them before Jesus. They may have previously heard Jesus as he taught. They may have known
neighbors who had been healed. What a sense of expectancy they must have had! The more
religious people among them even saw this as the fulfillment of ancient prophecy: “Blessed is
he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the kingdom of our father, David. Hosanna!”

LENTEN MEDITATION
(Mark 11:10)

But, there were others who were skepcs and even upset over what was happening. The Romans
probably had a council of war, alarmed at the following that these people were geng. “What
are we going to do with this young upstart?” Pharisees may have been troubled about what
the Roman authories might do, when they warned Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
Unfazed, Jesus answered, “I tell you that if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
(Luke 19:39-40)

As we seek to share who we are during the Lenten season, where do we stand amidst the
crowd? If we are unmoved and neutral, we find ourselves almost with the skepcs or even the
objectors. If we over react, we may find ourselves mocked and considered foolish. Jesus seems
to call us to share the joy, not rashly, but with the same appreciaon that could even make
stones speak of God’s great power and providence. Here we are amidst the crowd, and Jesus
is coming. What response will we give today and throughout our lives? How will we share both
with Jesus and with others in the fulfillment of God’s purposes for our work?

Lenten Fast
We are calling for a period of prayer and fasng for the enre church during the Season of
Lent, from Ash Wednesday (March 9, 2011) through Resurrecon Sunday (April 24, 2011).

“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil and aer fasng forty days and
forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these
stones to become loaves of bread.” Mahew 4:1-3

Fasng has been used throughout the ages to prepare the people of God for the great things God has in store
for them. As we pray through this season of transion and Divine imaginaon, I am calling, I am asking, I am
requesng that the enre church become involved in some form of prayer and fasng. The following are several
types of fasts that can be used to develop spiritual power and clarity.

Fast #1 - Fasng to confront destrucve forces

March 9 – March 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
March 20 - March 27 Eat only two meals a day before 6:00 p.m.
March 28 – April 2 Eat only one meal a day

LENTEN FAST
April 3 – April 9 Drink only juices, water and/or tea
April 10 – April 16 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
April 17 – April 23 Slowly begin to add meat to your diet

Fast #2 – The Daniel Fast (Taken from the book of Daniel). When Daniel was captured by the Babylonians, he
asked of the Babylonians if he, along with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, could fast, eang only fruits and
vegetables so they would be prepared to confront the Babylonian king.
March 9 – March 19 Eat all meals before 6:00 p.m.
March 20 - March 27 Eat only two meals a day before 6 p.m.
March 28 – April 2 Eat only fruits and vegetables before 6:00 p.m.
April 3 – April 9 Eat one meal a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added.
April 10 – April 16 Eat two meals a day before 6:00 p.m., meat may be added
April 17 – April 23 Eat three meals a day before 6:00 p.m.

Fast #3 - Removing certain foods or items from your diet or life

One type of fasng is to remove certain foods, such as fried foods, sweets, sodas or refined sugar and/or flour,
from your diet.

Please consult your doctor before proceeding with fasng. If you take medicaon or have any parcular ailment, it
is important to first communicate with your physician.

A Word From the Pastor
Last Sunday, our Mul-Media Department captured a few of the tesmonials of the members that
were moved to parcipate in the Living in the Key of G “Moment” that took place on April 3rd during
the 11 a.m. worship service. One of those tesmonials is presented below and illustrates so clearly
the power of God working in and through us, as we seek to exhibit GENEROSITY – Life in the Key of G.

Medina Pucke, the young lady first invited up by Pastor Moss as a person who was unemployed, or
financially under water, with a promise to be provided the resources to the. “He asked me to write
some numbers down, what I would like to the if I was able to. He then pulled out a checkbook and
proceeded to write out a check,” she said, connuing, “At that me, I had $10 in my pocket and put $5
of it in church.”

Ms. Pucke went on, “It went though my mind that there were a hundred things I could do with that

A WORD FROM THE PASTOR

money, but it stuck out to pay my thes. When I went back, I was very overwhelmed because I had been
very stressed about my financial situaon, being unemployed since November of last year. Back in my
seat, I showed my daughters, and they said, ‘you can pay a bill with this.’ I said, ‘no we need to the with
this,’ and this Sunday I did.”

“But on Wednesday, I received an offer for a job, and on Thursday I received an offer for another job.
Last Sunday I was unemployed, and this Sunday (April 10th), I’ve got two jobs - one I never applied for! A
friend of mine who knew my credenals; he put my applicaon in.”

“I feel like I was obedient and I did what he asked me to do with that. I didn’t foolishly spend it, I could
have used it in several ways, but I put it back where it belonged. Even before I put that money back today,
God knew my heart and knew I was going to do that and started to move those blessings my way and I
am very grateful for that.”

Medina had taken her daughter in aer she lost her job, and her other daughter was also out of work.
She was worrying about how to take care of everyone. “I was up all night wondering how I was going to
provide. But I kept praying and kept the faith, and I just did what I needed to do because I knew He was
going to make a way - AND He did.”

Stewardship
THE RESULTS OF A REDEEMED LIFE
Extravagant Generosity
“So Joseph took the body….and laid it in his own tomb.” Mahew 27:59-60

In the week beginning with Palm Sunday, the stories we read are full of people giving
extravagantly. Think about it and you see giving everywhere. Someone gives Jesus a
donkey to ride into Jerusalem, a valuable beast in that me. A woman buys expensive
ointment to massage Jesus’ red body. Someone shares their house for Jesus and his
disciples to celebrate Passover. His followers buy and prepare food for the feast. Jesus
gives them bread and tells them he will soon give his body, his blood, his life for them.
From the cross, Jesus gives the promise of forgiveness and eternal life to a thief. Then
this lovely story in Mahew of a Pharisee named Joseph risking his reputaon by giving

STEWARDSHIP
his personal tomb for Jesus’ burial. Then, in the resurrecon, God not only gave Jesus
life, but in so doing gave us forgiveness and a promise not to desert us, even when we
desert God. Can there be a more extravagant gi?

How do we respond to all this generosity? It needs to be more than colored eggs and
new clothes. It needs to be more than gardens of flowers in church and Easter baskets.
How do we respond to all this generosity? With our own generous discipleship every day
of our lives. Happy Easter.

The Stewardship Message is wrien by Rochelle A. Stackhouse, Senior Minister of The Church of the
Redeemer, United Church of Christ, New Haven, Conneccut.
