What do adverbs do?

We are revising adverbs this week.


An adverb is a word that describes a verb,
e.g. He twisted madly to avoid the snake's fangs.
Put adverbs into these sentences as you rewrite them in your books:
1. The raindrop ran down the window pane.
2. The lion paced around his cage.
3. The car swerved to aviod the pedestrian.

4. The unicorn tossed his gleaming white mane.

5. Have you seen that monkey jumping about in the road?


6. It rained all day on Tuesday last week.
7. Beckham tackled the defender.
8. The train to the Millennium Dome was late.

A VERB. MANY ADVERBS TELL US HOW SOMETHING
HAPPENED. MANY ADVERBS END IN THE LETTERS -LY.

Having Fun with Adverbs
Try using some descriptive words that directly refer to something
mentioned in a sentence. Look at these examples:

“Pass me the chocolate please,” Emily said sweetly.

“I’m the fastest runner in the school,” Ted replied swiftly.

Complete these sentences with a suitable adverb

Adverbs

• Adverbs tell us more about how the verb is performed.


They make the verb stronger.
• Sometimes they are next to the verb.
I sat quietly.


sentence.

verbs in these sentences.

L.O. Use the suffix ‘ly’ to make adverbs.

If the word has a silent e, just add on the ly.

Love + ly = Nice + ly =

Late + ly = Scarce + ly =

Safe + ly = Brave + ly =

Wise + ly = Like + ly =

If the word ends in y, change it to an i, then add ly.

Busy + ly = lazy + ly =

cheeky + ly = easy + ly =

greedy + ly = sneaky + ly =

crazy + ly = crafty + ly =

lucky + ly = happy + ly =

Adverbs

Rewrite each sentence, using an adverb in place of


the coloured words.

1. The rabbit left the room in a hurry.

2. Eeyore stood on his head with ease.

3. The child was sleeping in peace.

4. We can look forward to the future with hope.

5. The Chinese vase was broken by accident.

6. The little boy’s head was nodding with sleep.

7. The dog looked with scorn at the crisp the lady gave
him.

What is an adverb?
It is a word that tells us more about verbs.
Many adverbs tell us how something is done.
When answering the question 'how', adverbs are usually created from adjectives
with an added ly ending. E.g. quick becomes quickly.
Activity one.
Think of different ways that people might do these things.
Make a list of adverbs under each heading.
The people play. The people walk.
Happily Quickly
The people talk. The people wait.
Loudly Patiently

Certain words change when they become adverbs. If an adjective ends in a y, you
need to change the y to an I before adding the ly!
