Effective microorganisms (EM) Technology

The ultimate goal of sustainable agriculture is to develop farming systems that are productive,
profitable, energy conserving, environmentally sound, conserving of natural resources, and that
ensure food safety and quality. Therefore, this bio-organic fertilizer SBU has took the challenge
to give new dimension farming from conventional and chemical-based agriculture to natural
farming or organic farming using effective microorganisms (EM) technology. EM consists of
mixed cultures of beneficial and naturally-occurring microorganisms that can be applied as
inoculants to increase the microbial diversity of soils and plant. Research has shown that the
inoculation of EM cultures to the soils/plant ecosystem can improve soil quality, soil health, and
the growth, yield, and quality of corps. EM contains selected species of microorganisms
including predominant populations of lactic acid bacteria and yeast and smaller numbers of
photosynthetic bacteria, actinomycetes and other types of organisms. All of this are mutually
compatible with one another and can coexist in liquid culture. CEPP Bio-Organic Fertilizer SBU
focuses on the application of EM on plant, soil, environment and animal. We also provide
expertise in research and development in EM technology and utilize the by-product from the
agriculture industry.

Phototropic Bacteria

The phototrophic or photosynthetic bacteria are a group of independent, self supporting

microbes. These bacteria synthesize useful substance from secretions of root, organic matter
and/or harmful gases (eg. hydrogen sulphide), by using sunlight and the heat of soil as sources
and energy. Useful substances developed by these microbes include amino acid, nucleic acid,
bioactive substance and sugars, all of which promote plant growth and development. The
metabolites developed by these microorganisms are absorbed directly into plants and act as
substrates for increasing beneficial populations.

Lactic Acid Bacteria

Lactic Acid Bacteria produce lactic acid from sugars and other carbohydrates, developed by
phototropic bacteria and yeast.  However, lactic acid is a strong sterilizing compound and
suppresses harmful microorganisms and enhances decomposition of organic matter. Moreover,
lactic acid bacteria promote the decomposition of material such as lignin and cellulose and

ferment these materials, thereby removing undesirable effects of undecomposed organic

matter.

Yeast

Yeast synthesizes antimicrobial and other useful substances required for plant growth from
amino acids and sugars secreted by phototrophic bacteria, organic matter and plant roots. The
bioactive substances such as hormones and enzymes produced by yeast promote active cell
and root division. These secretions are also useful substrates for effective microbes such as
lactic acid bacteria and actinomycetes.

EM Technology Application

EM technology is used to maintain sustainable practices such as farming and sustainable living,
and to support human health and hygiene, animal husbandry, compost and waste management,
disaster clean-up, and generally used to promote functions in natural communities. EM is
employed in the following areas:

Agriculture: for conditioning soil, compost and plant wastes. EM use is intended to
produce an improved soil type, a zymogenic soil.

Agriculture: for feeding livestock, for waste treatment, for odor control and pest
management (eg.flies); EM use is intended to manages odors, improve feed utilization, and
improve component health and vialiy.

Agriculture: for treating or controlling various fungal diseases or pests of plants.

Lawn maintenance: for treating soil and compost or organic fertilizers, for preventing
fusarium and molds.

How to make Biofertilizer using the EM

                EM-1 → EMAS (E.M Activated Solution)

   B)     The process on how to make the biofetilizer.

    Process A (for 20L EMAS)

           1. Using

   1L E.M + 18L Water + 1L Molasses (Pati gula)/ 1kg Gula Merah

    2.      After mix the solution, let it for 5-10 days.

    Process B

           1.  Using

-          Carbon sources(C)                    → agriculture waste (ex: grasses, fruits)

-          Nitrogen sources (N)     → animal waste

-          Mineral sources(M)                    → food waste

           2. Using volume,

  Let it; 1C + 1N + 1M

  Ex : 1 L of C + 1L of N + 1L of M (the measurement must be in volume.)

         3.      Mix the mixture until it homogeneous.

         4.      After that, measure all the elements one by one and total it.

water used (in L).

         6.     Add the 3% EMAS and 3% Molasses of the total weight of elements C, N and M.

  7.      Lastly, let it at a warm place and close it with something that can let air going through it.
